The pension entitlements of EU officials in old age now add up to 122,5 billion euros. This is six billion euros more than at the end of 2020.
According to the Bild newspaper, citing calculations by the EU Commission, the reason for this is the salary increases due to inflation in the EU zone.
The EU Commission had previously decided to increase the salaries of EU officials by around seven percent retrospectively from July 1 this year. Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) receives around 2 000 euros more per month. An EU member of parliament can look forward to 623 euros more and an EU commissioner can look forward to a salary increase of 1 460 euros.
In addition to a pension that is far above the European average, the officials of the EU institutions also receive foreign allowances, child allowances, a high child benefit, facility assistance and a household allowance.
EU-employees are exempted from national income tax according to an agreement, the so-called Protocol on Privileges and Immunities of the European Union, annexed to the treaties establishing the Union.
