In order to apply for asylum in Germany, illegal migrants wanted to take a taxicab from Vienna, Austria to Germany.
A Viennese cab driver was pleased when several people got into his vehicle and chose Germany as their destination. After all, the cab business is also suffering from a Corona-related decline in turnover and the high cartage wage is just what is needed. However, it soon became clear to the cab driver that this would not work quite as easily as initially expected.Already on the way on the western freeway in Lower Austria, the driver finally triggered the silent alarm – he did not want to become a smuggler after all. The cab driver spoke fluent Arabic and was therefore able to understand the conversations of his passengers, which were about asylum and Germany. The police reacted immediately to the alarm and soon six patrol cars followed the cab on the highway until they could stop it at Pyhra (district Sankt Pölten-Land).The taxi driver told the police that it was a normally booked trip and that he had not been threatened. His passengers, who were in Austria illegally, immediately applied for asylum because they were denied the right to continue their journey to Germany. The migrants were temporarily detained under the Foreigners Act. It is not known whether the cab driver was paid a cartage fee.
