Because many Muslims find it “obscene”: German women should no longer lick ice cream

Colourful zebra crossings across every street, Pride flags on public transport and transgender pictures in kindergartens. While we are becoming more and more diverse, a major German newspaper asks whether women should eat ice cream in public. After all, Syrians would find that obscene.

It is simply part of the perfect summer day to walk through the city with an ice cream in your hand. But for many migrants this is not a matter of course, as Mohamad Alkhalaf explains in the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. In Syria, for example, it is considered obscene to lick an ice cream in public. Even worse, from a cone. Even bananas are cut into pieces before being eaten, so as not to trigger any bad fantasies.

“After all, it wasn’t long ago that this situation would have caused me considerable difficulties. A woman licking a scoop of ice cream in my line of sight. For several years, blushes of shame suffused my cheeks at such moments,” the author recalls. Incidentally, he thinks it’s okay to find it obscene here, too, but at least he suggests that immigrants get used to the fact that women are allowed to eat ice cream in Germany. Even transwomen – but it’s not quite that “colourful” in the newspaper “SZ” …
