Another stress test for Hungary’s borders

In response to the mass immigration to Central Europe in 2015/16, which was the fault of the then Chancellor Merkel, the Hungarian government immediately began fortifying the country’s borders at the time. Today, Hungary’s borders with non-EU countries are secured throughout with massive wire fences.

This is currently paying off, as the Hungarian borders are also being increasingly put to the test by illegals again these weeks. From Friday to Sunday alone, police and soldiers took action against 1572 illegal border crossers, the national police headquarters announced. In cooperation with Czech colleagues, 64 illegals were arrested on the outskirts of Szeged on Sunday evening alone, who identified themselves as Syrians during the check.

According to statistics on the police website, 477 foreigners who were in the country illegally were arrested and escorted through the temporary security border on Friday, 539 on Saturday and 553 on Sunday. In addition, three migrants were arrested inside the country over the weekend and alien proceedings were initiated against them.

Last week alone, 3846 illegal border crossers were arrested – the highest number so far this year. In the previous week, from 23 to 29 May, the total number of those arrested was 3533.
