Every day, the police apprehend illegal border crossers, especially in the district of Oberpullendorf. Many citizens are therefore worried. Women in particular are afraid to walk the streets alone in the morning and evening. Some of them therefore buy pepper sprays.Having strangers – often young men from Afghanistan – suddenly appear in the gardens of houses in the middle of the night has become an everyday occurrence for the inhabitants of the border communities. Besides the concern that these people could be infected with Corona, there is also a fear of possible assaults among many women. After all, Afghans regularly are listed in the crime statistics. Many people also remember the rape and killing of 13-year-old Leonie in Vienna at the end of June.Concerned citizens are therefore increasingly turning to self-defence and using so-called ” off-the-books weapons” such as batons, gas pistols and pepper sprays.Even if individual border communities are ” arming up”, according to representatives of the arms trade, there has not yet been a general surge in arms purchases, as there was during the great migration wave of 2015 – at least for the time being.
