The accused is a 33-year-old Albanian who is staying in France illegally. He was arrested by the National Police immediately after the offence and taken into police custody.
On Thursday March 28, at around 6pm, while a mass was being celebrated in the Sainte-Eulalie church in Rue de la Merci in Montpellier, a person stormed into the church and shouted “Allah Akbar” (“Allah is greater than everything” in Arabic).
Against the background of the current situation, this uninvited intrusion naturally caused quite a stir among the priest and his parishioners. However, the unarmed perpetrator left the house immediately without having committed any offence or damaged anything.
A National Police patrol was immediately on the scene, while officers from the municipal control centre located the perpetrator. He was eventually arrested without resistance at the Albert-1er tram stop on the Quai des Tanneurs near the Saint-Charles chapel.
He is a 33-year-old Albanian who was staying in the country illegally. According to our information, during his interview in police custody, he explained that he had “made a joke in bad taste under the influence of alcohol and some drugs”.
