Editor-in-chief of a major German daily newspaper accuses the churches of concealing or downplaying crimes against church institutions – “They shy away from the conflict with Muslim contempt for Christians and left-wing anti-Semitism”

The editor in chief of the newspaper “Welt”, Ulf Poschardt, has accused the churches of a lack of action against anti-Christian crimes. He commented on this in a commentary in the newspaper “Welt am Sonntag”.

Poschardt complains that the Protestant Church in Germany (EKD) speaks out “unasked about the moral challenges of the world” but remains “outrageously silent” when it comes to “denouncing obvious things” that affect them. “Statues of saints are spat upon, crosses are desecrated, people urinate in holy water basins. There is little to be heard about this from the EKD’s otherwise so talk-show-suitable permanent moral announcements. Even after the outrageous event in the southern Harz region, it remained rather quiet.”

Poschardt is referring to the desecration of a church in Nordhausen, Thuringia. A 25-year-old Afghan Muslim had cleared out a Protestant church there at the end of October and destroyed a crucifix that had been recovered from the rubble after the bombing of Nordhausen in World War II.

According to Poschardt, the churches deal with the big issues: “Saving the climate, justice for all and sundry and – like Catholics in this country – putting a gender star on God so that the Creator:in of heaven and earth doesn’t come across as too patriarchal.”

The journalist criticised that the EKD’s reaction was so restrained because “this crime and its perpetrator do not fit into the EKD’s well-founded naive migration policy, which also supports dubious, activist refugee helpers like Sea-Watch”. “The images of smashed Christ figures with charred eyes or severed legs have a traumatic effect on believers – and they probably rightly expect their church to protest louder and more strongly against this.” The Protestant Church, however, prefers to take care of “poor Muslims and refugees”.

Protestant church congresses can only be distinguished from Green Party congresses by their hymnals. Poschardt therefore asks, “How much longer is this going to go on?” After all, the members of the churches continue to ” desert in droves. They can’t stand the editorial tone of the preachers any more than they can stand the social cowardice” of the churches, which shy away from the conflict with “Muslim contempt for Christians and left-wing anti-Semitism”.
