On Saturday, a 42-year-old Turkish migrant attacked a 25-year-old Indian national at Berlin’s Ostkreuz and announced that he was going to hunt down Indians. According to a statement issued by the capital’s police, he had previously been “shouting loudly and approaching passers-by seemingly at random”. He then attempted to attack the 25-year-old. “The victim is said to have backed away from the attacks whilst trying to keep the attacker at bay with a cricket bat.”
The Turkish man briefly turned away from him, but then threw him onto the road and struck him several times on the head with his fist. The Federal Police arrested the attacker. “Whilst the facts were being established, the attacker insulted the 25-year-old in Turkish on the basis of his origin,” the statement said. When asked by the JUNGE FREIHEIT newspaper, a spokeswoman was unable to say exactly what the assailant had said, citing tactical reasons relating to the investigation. The authorities’ statement goes on to say that the 42-year-old was taken to a police van, where he said “that he would hunt down Indians”.
In the perpetrator’s rucksack, the emergency services found “an alarm gun along with ammunition and the flag of an extremist organisation”. This was a flag of the Turkish Ülkücü movement – commonly known as the “Grey Wolves” – as first reported by the newspaper BZ and confirmed to the JUNGE FREIHEIT newspaper by a police spokeswoman.
