Just a few days after a case of serious violence within a family, in which a father stabbed his own daughter, another bloody incident in Vienna is now causing a stir: in a shared flat in the Brigittenau district of Vienna , a 26-year-old Afghan man is alleged to have injured his 27-year-old flatmate with a knife.
The attack took place on Thursday at around 6.30 p.m. According to investigations so far, the 26-year-old had only moved into the accommodation in the 20th district a few weeks ago. An argument broke out between the two men, which, according to the police report, started ‘for religious reasons’. The younger man is said to have accused his compatriot of not practising his religion correctly, reports Austrian news outlet oe24.
During the altercation, the attacker allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and inflicted cuts on his flatmate’s hand. The victim fled the flat and called the police emergency number from the street. Emergency services and paramedics arrived quickly at the scene and the 27-year-old was taken to hospital.
Police officers from the Brigittenau municipal police station provisionally arrested the alleged perpetrator at the scene of the crime. The man is known to the authorities and has already been convicted of grievous bodily harm. At that time, he was issued with a restraining order and a provisional weapons ban.
The weapon used in the attack was a kitchen knife with a blade length of around 20 centimetres. The 26-year-old was charged with suspicion of intentional grievous bodily harm and is in police custody.
