A woman was fatally injured in a knife attack in the Zehlendorf district of Berlin on Wednesday evening. As the police and the public prosecutor’s office confirmed at the request of the newspaper Berliner Zeitung, the 50-year-old ex-partner attacked 36-year-old Nurhan B. at around 8.30 pm on the pavement in front of her home in Hampsteadstraße.

Rescue workers initially succeeded in resuscitating her. The woman underwent emergency surgery in hospital. However, she subsequently died. The police arrested 50-year-old A. The investigators are considering a possible ‘honour killing’. The public prosecutor’s office assumes that the ex-husband from Lebanon deliberately and intentionally killed the woman, who was also Lebanese. He is said to have ambushed Nurhan B. in front of the house. ‘The woman had separated from her husband. He wanted to restore his honour,’ said a spokesperson for the public prosecutor’s office. Eyewitnesses report that A. repeatedly shouted during the crime: ‘ I have the right to do this’

A. had previously attracted attention due to domestic violence. A temporary injunction had been issued against him. He should not have approached the 36-year-old and should not have known where his ex-wife lived. Both have four minor children aged between 15 and 8. According to an eyewitness, the eldest daughter saw her mother shortly after the crime. She was totally shocked. ‘I feel so sorry for the children’, said a local resident. The children are now staying with relatives. Two uncles and an aunt picked up the children on Thursday morning.

According to the Berliner Zeitung, the couple had previously lived in Neukölln. Nurhan B. then moved into the house in Hampsteadstraße, which belongs to local housing association Degewo, three years ago. An arrest warrant for murder is to be issued against the 50-year-old Lebanese man on Thursday.

According to the Berliner Zeitung, around 50 people gathered on Wednesday evening in front of the hospital where the woman died. Witnesses speak of a connection to the clan milieu. When asked, the public prosecutor’s office denied any clan connection.

Eyewitnesses reported the day after the crime that Nurhan B.’s flat was always noisy. Neighbours say that the children were not always supervised, so why couldn’t the woman be better protected even though her ex-husband was violent? Benjamin Jendro, spokesman for the police union (GdP), expressed his shock on Thursday morning. ‘Femicides are a growing problem in our society and yet it is difficult in the political arena to create a framework to better protect women at risk,’ Jendro wrote on X.
