A horrific case was heard at the criminal court in Dinant on Wednesday morning. A 27-year-old man is charged with raping his stepdaughter, that was eight years old at the time of the crime, between January and March 2021 in Doische.

An arrest warrant was issued for the man in September 2021. On Wednesday morning, before the criminal court in Dinant, he admitted to having a sexual relationship with his stepdaughter, which he justified with her behaviour and his consumption of alcohol. “It was the first time I drank, I could not control myself,” explained the person of Syrian origin. Faced with the chairman’s question as to what drove him to commit the crime, the accused explained that his stepdaughter had asked for a sexual relationship. “She is eight years old, but in her mind she is older. She came on my lap, gave me kisses and then asked me for this relationship.”
The prosecution asked for ten years in prison. The lawyer for the defence pleaded for as comprehensive a simple suspended sentence as possible, highlighting the life journey of her client, who had come to Belgium in 2019. “In his country, young girls can marry at the age of 13. As a result of the acts committed, he has become aware of this. He wants to adapt to our laws and live the Belgian way.” Verdict on July 13. DH
