An investigation has uncovered that approximately 4,300 previously deported migrants were discovered back in Britain during the period from 2021 to 2025.
The findings show 4,614 separate re-entry incidents involving people who had been removed from the country over the five-year span.
More than 720 of these migrants faced deportation on at least two occasions, the data from The Sun reveals.
Albanian nationals represented the largest group among those returning after removal, accounting for over one-third of all cases with 1,525 individuals detected back in Britain.
The Home Office has acknowledged the true figures may be considerably higher, as identification matching is not always possible for every person encountered.
On average, more than two deported migrants re-entered the UK daily during this period.
The financial burden of enforced removals stands at £48,800 per deportation on average during the 2024/25 financial year, dwarfing the £4,300 cost associated with voluntary departures.
Following Albanians in the re-entry statistics were Romanian nationals at 767 cases, with Afghans numbering 281, Lithuanians at 233, and Iraqis accounting for 150 instances.
During the year to March 2025, authorities recorded 26,388 voluntary returns alongside 8,590 enforced removals.
It remains uncertain how many of those encountered after previous deportation are still present in the country.
Since Sir Keir Starmer entered Downing Street in July 2024, more than 76,000 migrants have made the Channel crossing illegally.
Labour’s flagship agreement with France, designed to operate on a reciprocal removal basis, has produced underwhelming results since launching in August 2025.
By June 15 2026, merely 921 migrants had been sent back to France under the arrangement.
The policy encountered difficulties from its inception, with legal challenges in the High Court blocking the removal of asylum seekers.
In a single week between June 15 and 22, 1,912 people reached Britain via small boats.
Despite these outcomes, the government committed an additional £662million to French authorities.
Reform UK Shadow Home Secretary Zia Yusuf condemned the situation in stark terms: “Britain’s borders have become a national joke.
“Thousands of people who were deported from this country have strolled back in, with some being removed and returning more than once.
“The Tories turned Britain into a revolving door for illegal migration, and Labour have no interest in closing it. The British public are now paying the price for decades of incompetence.”
Mr Yusuf pledged his party would “restore control, enforce the law, and ensure that deported means deported.”
A Home Office spokesperson defended the government’s record, stating: “We will not accept any abuse of our borders.
“Individuals who are returned and subsequently attempt to re-enter the UK illegally will be caught and removed.
“Nearly 70,000 individuals have been returned or removed from the UK since the July 2024 election to the end of March 2026 – a 41 per cent increase on the number of returns recorded in the previous 21-month period.”

This story is bigger than Israel. This story is not about Palestinians versus Israelis. This story is not about what drives people to the streets, even when many of them could not find Gaza on a map.
This story is about the fading trust in UN institutions and, even more troubling, in humanitarian work itself.
After October 7, HonestReporting, an Israeli media watchdog, alerted the public to a series of uncomfortable facts. What they discovered was that several Gaza-based ‘freelance photojournalists’ appeared to be operating in close proximity to prominent Hamas leaders and attackers during the assault, or possessed material that raised serious questions about how it had been obtained. The photographers in question were working for or associated with media outlets such as AP, Reuters, NYT, and CNN.
This went beyond a simple ethical concern about someone just “doing their jobs” versus allegedly knowing about the planned massacre ahead of time and/or actively participating in it on the day of the pogrom. The outlets, as expected, denied responsibility and characterized the photographers as independent contributors. At this stage, only Israelis and those closely following the aftermath of the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust seemed troubled by these findings.
However, the story did not end with media workers revealed to be implicated in the October 7 pogrom.
In January 2024, even more uncomfortable claims started to surface. Based on hostage testimonies and Israeli intelligence work, it was reported that at least 12 UNRWA employees actively participated in the October 7 attack. That means active participation in the killings, raping, kidnapping, or the assault’s logistics.
For those unfamiliar with UNRWA, it is a UN agency founded to address the Palestinian refugee crisis. Nothing else but the Palestinian one. While there is a UNHRC whose mission is to help and assist in refugee-related matters, the Palestinians received their own agency. Critics have long argued that this unique arrangement contributes to the perpetuation of the conflict rather than its resolution. But this story is not about UNRWA per se.
The first report was published by Israeli journalist Almog Boker, who was told by a hostage he had been held for nearly 50 days in the attic of a teacher employed by UNRWA. Later on, Emily Damar, a former hostage, reportedly told British Prime Minister Keir Starmer that she had been held in UNRWA facilities. While this was not a claim against a UNRWA employee, it was serious enough for the UN itself to file an investigation.
The UN’s own internal investigation led to the dismissal of nine UNRWA employees for possible involvement in the October 7 attack. It was an unequivocal revelation: a taxpayer-funded humanitarian body had at least seven employees directly implicated in a massacre.
Given this evidence, one might assume these findings would have marked the end of UNRWA under normal circumstances. Close the agency, run an even deeper investigation, and just place Palestinian refugee matters under the same umbrella as every other refugee crisis handled within the UN.
There are several reasons why this would never happen: the most important being that of the world’s refugees, only the Palestinians’ status is inheritable— all others cease to be refugees the moment they are registered in a safe hosting country.
As a result of these revelations, 17 countries, including major donors such as the U.S., Germany, and France, suspended funding to UNRWA in 2023; eventually, all of them but the United States unfroze their funding, and business continues as usual. Somehow, trust was not shattered towards an organization whose paid employees killed people.
Among the largest donors is the European Union—more specifically, the European Commission. On average, the EU funnels €80–90 million a year to UNRWA. Most European taxpayers likely have little idea that their governments help finance the agency.
Would that be too harsh a step, or simply necessary? Let’s test the proposition.
For years, questioning UNRWA was treated like a moral crime. Criticizing governments, armies, or corporations is allowed, but raising concerns or asking questions about the organization handing out aid in Gaza is immediately labeled as propaganda. And yet, the brutal truth is that the more important an organization claims to be, the more it deserves ruthless scrutiny. And UNRWA has failed that test spectacularly.
According to the most recent reports from Washington, federal investigators are now probing at least 1,500 UNRWA-linked individuals for suspected terrorist ties. This is around 12% of the agency’s personnel in Gaza. The number is so significant that this is nothing short of systemic infiltration.
While the fantasy about UNRWA had begun to shatter following the first rounds of allegations, these recent reports from the USAID Office of the Inspector General have, hopefully, made the agency’s legitimacy irreparably damaged. As said, this is not about Gaza or Hamas, or Israel. This is about institutional legitimacy, transparency, and the money being used for terrorist-linked activities.
UNRWA’s leadership has stonewalled the investigations. If there’s nothing to hide, why not cooperate fully?
The scandal exposes the UN’s deeper rot: an institution that shields its failures, protects its insiders, and demands money and deference while delivering neither accountability nor results. The blind trust towards UNRWA is gone.
As Adam Kredo, foreign policy and national security writer, says about the U.S. federal report, while these 1,500 people were not directly participating in the October 7 attack, they are implicated for their links, contacts, membership in terrorist-related activities, and Hamas itself.
The United States designated Hamas as a Foreign Terrorist Organization in 1997. The European Union added Hamas to its terrorist list in 2003. Yet despite decades of international debate, the United Nations has never adopted a universally accepted definition of terrorism.
UNRWA maintains that there is no systemic infiltration within the agency and that only a small number of employees were implicated.
That response raises a simple question:
How many is too many for a humanitarian organization funded by taxpayers around the world?
For European citizens whose taxes help fund UNRWA, even one is too many. Couple that with UNRWA’s reluctance to fully cooperate with investigations, and the trust deficit only grows.
Perhaps Europe should emulate the United States and demand the same level of accountability before writing the next cheque.
If we continue as we are, Britain is set to become an Islamo-Blasphemy regime. So says Benjamin Jones, case director at the Free Speech Union and author of the new book: Island of Strangers – Diversity, Decline and Crisis in Free Speech Buy the book here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Island-Stran… BRITAIN IS BEING TRANSFORMED. IT IS UNFREE. AND IT IS GETTING WORSE. As mass migration reshapes Britain’s population, an increasingly authoritarian state attempts to manage the resulting hyper-diversity by suppressing freedom of speech. We see this in two-tier policing, in attempts to criminalise blasphemy against Islam, and even in the private sector where thousands have lost their jobs or have been punished for expressing their beliefs. In Island of Strangers, Ben Jones – a director of the Free Speech Union – shows how multiculturalism came just as Britain was losing its sense of itself, as Christianity declined, and how its elite embraced a creed of ‘diversityism’. Grounded in a long view of Britain’s history, this book gets to the fundamental causes of why Keir Starmer’s UK feels so unfree. The free speech crisis isn’t just a passing problem. Silencing dissent is now built into how the fractured UK is governed. Different identity groups are increasingly locked in competition to protect their sacred ideas. The most potent challenge to Britain’s tradition of free speech comes from within Islam. This book is unafraid to grapple with these truths. Increasingly it seems impossible even to define who ‘we’ are, much less what we believe or what unites us. Do we really have more in common than that which divides us? Increasingly it feels like we don’t. Taking Keir Starmer’s infamous line, this book argues that Britain has been transformed into ‘an island of strangers’.
We all know the myth – to boil frogs, slowly increase the temperature so they won’t realize it until it’s too late to jump out of the pot and save themselves. This summer, it appears the frogs are starting to feel the heat. Along with the anger at open borders, this may finally presage the end of the green nonsense and the politicians who are destroying their countries by promoting this hogswallop.
Like clockwork, it gets hot in summer in western Europe. And like clockwork, the morons in the European ministries and media blame climate change for their own failure to face reality and make proper provisions for adapting to it. Living in the UK, Germany, and France seems to be like living in a giant HOA run by scientific idiots who exempt themselves from the draconian measures they apply to others as they set about recreating pre-industrial feudal states.
The reports from there are in sharp contrast to the experience of FIFA visitors who saw air conditioning everywhere in the U.S., even in Houston’s very large stadium, so it might be even more damaging to the governments involved.
France
Monique Barbut, Minister for Ecological Transition (yes, there is such a thing there), works in an air-conditioned office. She holds stock in a number of large energy-consuming companies like Airbus. She swatted away questions relating to her failure to ensure air conditioning where it’s most needed with this non-sequitur deflection:
I’m horrified by the people who tell me that all we need to do is put air conditioning everywhere (…) Do you think that’s going to prevent forest fires, the death of animals? That’s not adaptation, it’s an emergency measure.”
French electricity is largely nuclear-generated, so greens are deprived of the economy-killing excuse offered by the UK and German functionaries that they must reduce carbon emissions. (As if air conditioning offered much, if any, increase in carbon emissions. It is far less significant — even if you believed it affected the weather to any meaningful degree — than the output in China. China, by contrast, air conditions much of its urban facilities, its public transportation, and even water mists outside large buildings to cool the ambient air.) In 2003, thousands died in Paris for lack of air conditioning. And because of the nature of most living quarters sans air conditioning, numerous premature deaths occur every time the temperature rises in the summer. Without widespread air conditioning, perishable food will spoil in grocery stores, computers will not work, and public transport will be unendurably hot. Kids are fainting in schools. In one city in southern France, parents got together to pay for some air conditioners. The communist mayor ordered them ripped out because not every school in the city had them. Égalité! Public transport in France generally lacks air conditioning, and the TGV (fast train) from Paris to Nice broke down in a tunnel, resulting in a five-hour delay. Babies fainted in the 122-degree heat aboard the train. The level of bureaucratic idiocy that results in so much death and economic disruption is impossible to ignore.
Council planning officers ordered residents to remove air-con units over fears they produce too much carbon dioxide, stating they should only be used as a “last resort”.
The net zero clampdown is part of building regulations that state “active cooling” should only ever be allowed when all other means of “passive cooling”, such as opening windows or using fans, have been exhausted.[snip] Meanwhile, temperatures are forecast to reach as high as 40C this week, with Britain sweltering under a record heatwave that has forced schools to close, brought trains to a halt and led to the Met Office issuing a red “risk-to-life” warning.
Apparently, the busybody council meddlers require people to justify their need for active cooling. “Air-con engineers told The Telegraph that they had been called out to remove perfectly operational units worth thousands of pounds across London.”
Now, what makes all this even crazier is that all new housing in the UK is required to have heat pumps. As far as I can tell, heat pumps and air conditioners are technically the same — they use the same compression cycle — the heat pump extracts heat from outside and brings it inside, while the air conditioner brings the heat from inside to the outside.
The nitwit energy policies of the UK., including shutting down their North Sea oil production and mandating irregular and insufficient energy sources, meant the country was forced to pay about 17 times normal prices to obtain emergency energy supplies.
Rupert Lowe, who heads the Restore movement in the UK, speaks for me:
With such a debate raging about whether residential air con is a ‘climate responsible’ purchase or not, I want to outline the official Restore Britain position. WE DO NOT CARE.
Germany
For ideological reasons, Germany (and Belgium) stupidly destroyed their nuclear power plants, which it is claimed could have powered air conditioners at full blast all summer with fewer CO2 emissions. Even facilities where common sense demands air conditioning — like hospitals — are deprived of them because placing them in new buildings would create envy in owners of older buildings where there are none. The most shocking story of this green crab pot philosophy is the relatively new hospital in Düsseldorf, which provides care for the most vulnerable heart attack victims who are suffering and probably perishing in this heated, closed atmosphere after builders were denied the right to install cooling systems.
To every criticism for mandating stupid policies, Germany has chosen to flat-out lie to its citizens.
German government to its citizens: portable A/C is “not effective” because the pressure drop sucks hot air into the room, “which heats the room even more”. 🤯 “Here we see the midwit condescension of the European managerial elite in its purest form. First of all, this is all disingenuous. The environment ministry knows full-well that air-conditioners work, they just don’t want people using them because it would strain the German electricity infrastructure — which the environment ministry itself has done a good deal to weaken. Also, if portable AC units don’t work, why have Germans bought 75% more of these machines in the last five years? Why are there literally millions of reviews on Amazon and elsewhere saying “This thing works great! Finally I can sleep through the night!” Why has pretty much nobody ever returned an AC unit, saying “It just made the room hotter!” How stupid do these bureaucrats think Germans are?”
In nearby Austria, the Viennese are replaying the 1940s as informers against those deemed enemies of the state. This time, the “enemies” are those who installed air conditioners.
In the back of many minds is the thought that the leaders of these European states understand full well that the most vulnerable — the elderly poor — are most likely to die from these policies, and that will free up social welfare funds for the hordes of third-world criminals and layabouts they prefer as constituents.
The European Union
Perhaps my favorite example of the feudal structure underlying European energy policies is this from Politico:
The European Commission’s headquarters was forced to shut down its air-conditioning system on Friday due to the heat wave.
Staff working at the Berlaymont building received a text at midday, reading: “BERL — URGENT — Due to extreme weather conditions, forced shut down of air cooling system from floor 1 to 7 for the rest of the day.”
The 13-story building is home to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, her 26 commissioners and about 3,000 staff. Von der Leyen works on the 13th floor, and most of her commissioners’ offices are housed on floors eight or above.
It reminds me of the many laws in feudal Europe which limited the peasants to poor housing, harsh labor, inadequate low-protein nutrition, raggedy clothing, and made it illegal for them to escape.
Some Brits predict it’s only a matter of time before the U.S. military airdrops air conditioners over there.
Sir Sadiq Khan is facing fresh scrutiny over his previous claims about grooming gangs in London after the Met Police identified more than 4,000 potential child sexual exploitation cases that could now be reopened.
The findings, first revealed by The Telegraph, come after Scotland Yard examined around 12,000 reports of alleged child sexual exploitation dating back to 2010.
Roughly one in three cases are now flagged for potential reinvestigation after police or the Crown Prosecution Service previously decided to take no further action.
Sir Sadiq previously insisted there was “no indication” grooming gangs were operating in the capital.
Appearing before the London Assembly Police and Crime Committee in January 2025, the Mayor repeatedly declined to answer questions from Conservative member Susan Hall about the scale of grooming gangs in London.
When asked how many rape gangs were operating in the capital, Sir Sadiq repeatedly asked Ms Hall to clarify what she meant.
At a later committee session, he said: “My understanding from speaking to the police, and she will appreciate, I have done on a regular basis, is and I choose my words carefully for the reasons she will understand there are no reported cases and also no indication of the grooming gangs that she is concerned about in London.”
His comments prompted accusations of a cover-up, with victims claiming the Mayor was “gaslighting” them.
The review follows Baroness Casey’s landmark report into group-based child sexual exploitation, which concluded the criminal justice system had failed victims for decades.
Her recommendations led to the National Crime Agency launching Operation Beaconport, a nationwide review of child sexual exploitation cases that may have been closed prematurely.
The Metropolitan Police has now referred all 4,000 flagged cases to the NCA, which is expected to decide within weeks how many should be formally reopened.
In areas such as South Yorkshire and Greater Manchester, perpetrators in high-profile grooming gang cases have predominantly been Pakistani Muslim men.
However, London’s cases are understood to involve a broader range of offender backgrounds and include intrafamilial abuse, online exploitation and in-person offending.
Ms Hall described the findings as “utterly disgraceful”.
“It has been like getting blood out of a stone,” she said.
The Conservative London Assembly member said the scale of the review should force people to confront the extent of the abuse.
“The resistance I have encountered has been totally unacceptable and when you look at the number of cases being reviewed you have to stop and think that is 4,000 young girls raped and sexually abused and you have to think how dreadful that is.”
A spokesman for Sir Sadiq rejected any suggestion of a cover-up, saying the Mayor had welcomed the review and had “been clear we must leave no stone unturned”.
City Hall also pointed to £2.4million announced last November to fund specialist support services for survivors of child sexual exploitation.
Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has warned the force will require additional officers and resources to carry out any fresh investigations, noting officers already deal with around 2,000 sexual offences every month.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Kevin Southworth urged victims and survivors to come forward, saying they “will be listened to and supported”.
European countries under the unchecked mass migration scourge are endlessly plagued by terrorist attacks from so-called ‘asylum seekers.’
Besides the rapes, stabbing and lynchings, one relentless feature is the weaponizing of motor vehicles – an efficient way to kill and maim the helpless native populations.

Also today, in the UK, a Somali migrant has been arrested on ‘suspicion of attempted murder’ after allegedly driving his car against multiple pedestrians.
“Five people were injured, with two being treated at the scene and three taken to hospital after the incident in Ealing Broadway, London just before 2.30pm on Saturday.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “At this time, it is believed they have all suffered non-life-threatening or life-changing injuries.
‘The car involved did not stop at the scene but was stopped in nearby Grange Park a short time later. The driver, a 34-year-old Somalia-born British man, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and attempted murder’.”

As for the potential motive, so far, the incident is not being treated as terrorism.
It’s just another non-assimilating ‘UK citizen’, right?
“Road closures are in place in the area and could remain in place for some time while the police investigation progresses.
[…] A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said it dispatched ‘a number of resources including ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars, a volunteer emergency responder crew and an incident response officer to the scene’.”
A two-year-old girl was found dead inside a property on Pyrcroft Road in Chertsey on Thursday evening |1 Cowley Ave – Google Maps
A man has been charged with murder following the discovery of the body of a two-year-old girl at an address in Chertsey.
Officers were called to an address in Pyrcroft Road about 17:40 BST on Thursday, following reports of a concern for safety.
Kevin Kerjean, 31, has also been charged with the rape and sexual assault of a child under 13 and is due to appear at Guildford Crown Court on Monday.
Surrey Police had previously said the girl was three years old.
An investigation into the death remains ongoing and the force says it is not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
Kerjean was described by police as a French national who was born in the Central African Republic.
Det Ch Supt Jon Groenen said: “This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the child’s family, as well as all those who knew her.
“Our teams are working hard to build a picture of what happened, and a significant police presence will remain in Pyrcroft Road over the coming days,” he added.
On Thursday, several bouquets of flowers were left at the entrance to Syward Place, an apartment complex located on the corner of Pyrcroft Road and Bell Bridge Road.
“We appreciate that the incident itself, as well as the significant police presence, will be concerning for residents,” said Groenen.
“We would like to thank them for their cooperation as we conduct our investigation.”
A far-left National Assembly member has sparked backlash after she gloated over the demographic decline of the native white French population in favour of immigrant groups, as the LFI continues to embrace Great Replacement ideology.
During a debate in the National Assembly this week on legislation intended to crack down on fraudulent or arranged marriages, MP Clémence Guetté of the radical leftist La France Insoumise (France in Rebellion/LFI) party, declared that alleged efforts to preserve the French ethnicity have failed.
“You have lost the racist ideological battle. Today, one in three French people is already linked to immigration,” she celebrated, according to Le Journal du Dimanche.
The deputy accused the populist National Rally party of Marine Le Pen and the conservative Union of the Right for the Republic (UDR) party of Éric Ciotti of seeking to protect the ” so-called native French” population, which she equated to “white French people”.
Guetté further claimed that the anti-fraud legislation was merely intended to “throw obstacles” in front of migrants who wish to “build their lives in our country, get married, start a family”, and take part in “today’s citizenship.”
It comes amid a broader move among La France Insoumise to openly embrace the concepts of “New France” and the “Great Replacement”, a term coined by French philosopher Renaud Camus, who accused Western elites of viewing citizens of their nations as interchangeable economic units that can be swapped out for less expensive, foreign alternatives with little consequence.
LFI leader and presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who has sought to bolster his party’s ranks with immigrant, and particularly Muslim populations within France, over the “boring” white native population.
Mélenchon has attempted to skirt a delicate line; on the one hand, he celebrates multicultural “New France”, and he has coyly taken to using the Great Replacement term on the campaign trail, while claiming that it merely refers to the natural transition from one generation to the next, rather than ethnic cleansing.
Upon the release last month of statistics from the National Institute of Demographic Studies (INED) in Paris, which found that one in three people had a connection to immigration, the Moroccan-born Spanish/Sicilian migrant Mélenchon declared that France is “our home,” in another apparent attempt to appropriate nationalist rhetoric.
The INED study, which questioned 27,000 people, found that roughly 13 per cent of the French population was born abroad, 11 per cent were the children of at least one immigrant, and a further 10 per cent had an immigrant grandparent.
The study provided perhaps the closest glimpse into the actual impact of immigration over the generations, given that France is officially a “colour blind” nation, meaning it does not track ethnicity in the census.
Guetté is not alone among LFI politicians to celebrate the declining white population of France, with Angolan Carlos Martens Bilongo, a member of the National Assembly for La France Insoumise, boasting last year, “If we’ve had more children than them, too bad for them,” while calling for minorities to continue outbreeding the French to “show them that we are more numerous and that we are more intelligent.”
‘My dear spectacular and special friend’: Fergie visited Epstein during his ‘sweetheart’ Florida incarceration in 2009
Epstein’s ‘sweetheart deal’ came with a ‘sweetheart work-release’ permit.
News arose today that disgraced former Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson visited Jeffrey Epstein twice at his ‘office’ for a ‘bogus firm’ he set up for work-release while imprisoned in Florida on a child sex offense.
When we say the firm was ‘bogus’ we are NOT passing judgment or trying to guess – Epstein himself characterizes it so in an email to Fergie: ‘250 south Australian suite 1404. ten minutes from airport. [The number and address for the fake office of the fake company, the Florida Science Foundation]’.
‘Fake office for the fake company’… Epstein could be brutally honest in some emails.
Ferguson met the convicted pedophile on two separate occasions at his Palm Beach ‘office’ that he used to leave jail every day ‘to work’ and only come back to sleep.

“Epstein victims have alleged in recent weeks that he abused them at the office on 250 South Australian Avenue while he was supposed to be in jail at the nearby Palm Beach County Stockade.
The sex offender was granted access to a generous work release program after he had been jailed for procuring a minor for prostitution in June 2008, which allowed him to leave his cell for up to 12 hours a day.”
Ferguson visited the convicted sex offender twice at his fake office during his incarceration.
Nine months into Epstein’s sentence, she wrote him asking to stop by for ‘a quick cup of tea’ during a layover in Florida.
She later called him ‘My dear spectacular and special friend’.

“The former Duchess of York has already faced a backlash after emails emerged earlier this year that suggested she had later visited Epstein with her two daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, when the pedophile was released from jail and placed under house arrest a month later, in July 2009.
‘Ferg and the two girls came’, Epstein told Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for trafficking girls and women to [him].”
When Fergie attempted to distance herself from Epstein years later, the disgraced financier joked that it was a ‘bold move’ for someone who had even visited him in jail on a child sex offense.
Germany is once again debating the possibility of banning Alternative for Germany (AfD). This time, the push comes not from a court ruling, nor from a direct government decision, but from an extensive legal report produced by the NGO Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte (GFF). The organisation, whose name (ironically) translates as ‘Society for Civil Rights,’ argues that the party is unconstitutional as per Article 21(2) of Germany’s Basic Law.
The document, presented this week, was immediately used by leaders of the SPD and the Greens as an opportunity to reopen the debate over a ban procedure before the Federal Constitutional Court. The report is based on public sources: speeches, social media posts, party programmes, parliamentary motions, and statements by party officials.
Social Democratic leader Bärbel Bas called for the consideration of “legal steps,” while Green officials demanded progress toward a formal application against the party.
Formally, neither Bas nor the Greens can ban AfD. German law reserves that decision for the Constitutional Court. In addition, only the Bundestag, the Bundesrat, or the federal government can submit an application for a party ban. But it is clear that they do not want to miss the opportunity to turn an external report into institutional ammunition to further isolate a party that already competes as one of the country’s main electoral forces.
GFF accuses AfD of violating human dignity and the democratic principle. According to its authors, the party promotes an “ethno-cultural” concept of the German people, discriminates against citizens with a migrant background, and treats its political opponents as enemies of the democratic order.
The report also seeks to distinguish the AfD case from the NPD precedent, whose attempted ban failed in 2017 because the Constitutional Court found that the party labelled as neo-Nazi lacked any real capacity to impose its programme.
That is the key point. The NPD was marginal. AfD is not. It has representation in the Bundestag, in regional parliaments, and electoral support that, in several polls, places it close to or above the major traditional parties. Precisely for that reason, its opponents now present its democratic strength as a legal argument against it.
The offensive also comes at a time when AfD has questioned the role of NGOs financed directly or indirectly with public funds, and their influence over German political life.
