The UK’s decline speeds up with the home county of Oxford banning the flag

by Andrea Widburg

I won’t say that Oxford, a town located in Oxfordshire County, England, is the first thing people think of when they think of England, but it’s certainly one of the main things they think of. The city grew up around a castle built by Robert D’Oyly, who came over in 1066 with William the Conqueror. It became a center of scholarship by the end of the 12th century, and a full-fledged university town by the beginning of the 13th century.

For 800 years, Oxford University, like Cambridge University, was a primary center of European intellectualism, from the medieval era through the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and into the modern era. Each was the birthplace of uncountable British political and thought leaders. They were, for many, a microcosm of everything that was Great Britain when Britain was still great.

But times have changed. Oxford is an anti-Western, anti-British institution, and the county that hosts it is now banning the flag of St. George, which is the official flag of England. (The more familiar Union Jack is the flag of the United Kingdom.)

To understand the rot in Oxfordshire, you need to appreciate the rot in Oxford.

In 2011, it floated a plan to rebrand its ancient theology department as a multi-faith department. (Oxford, like most European universities, started out as a theological school.) For the first time in 800 years, theology students would no longer be required to learn their Bible (both Old and New Testaments) but could instead focus entirely on Islam or Hinduism. By 2016, that plan was a reality, with Buddhism, feminism, and mysticism added as acceptable theological studies in lieu of the Bible.

By 2017, Oxford banned a Christian group from setting up booths at its Freshers’ Fair, lest it “harm” those freshers. In 2021, one of its colleges apologized for hosting a Christian conference. In 2023, LGBT+ students were circulating lists of “homophobic” churches—that is, churches that still preached a core biblical doctrine, which is that homosexuality is not right with God. By 2025, Oxford had dropped its ancient Latin graduation language, which used terms like “ladies” and “gentlemen,” to accommodate the “it” people demanding representation.

After the October 7, 2023, massacre in Israel and Israel’s subsequent determination to destroy Hamas, Oxford University itself adopted a neutral position. A large number of faculty members were not neutral. They were all in for Hamas. In addition, about 23 of the 39 colleges backed Hamas. And of course, as in America, the students were wildly antisemitic.

In 2021, some bright minds at Oxford tried to cancel the entire canon of Western music. And in October 2025, the head of the Oxford Union, the organization that sponsors Oxford’s famous debating society, a man named George Abaraonye (so you can guess how deep his British roots run), loudly celebrated Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Although Abaraonye was eventually driven from office, the fact is that he is a perfect symbol of modern academia in Britain.

In other words, Oxford, the most famous town in Oxfordshire, is rotten to the core. It’s scarcely surprising, then, that the rot would have spread from town to county. And that’s how we end up with what Spiked (a wonderful British publication) calls “A fatwa on the England flag.”

The leader of Oxfordshire County Council issued a stern warning this week. Acts of ‘intimidation’, Liz Leffman said, had left residents feeling ‘distressed, unwelcome and unsafe in their own communities’. ‘We will not hesitate to take further legal steps where necessary’, she said, reassuring Oxonians that this outbreak of criminality would be met with the full force of the council’s authority.

This is very strong language. So strong, in fact, that you could be forgiven for thinking that Oxfordshire might be in the midst of an epidemic of burglary, knife-crime or drive-by shootings. You would be wrong. The ‘crime’ Leffman is referring to is flying the English flag.

‘The widespread installation of flags by Raise the Colours is not a sign of patriotism’, said Leffman, referring to the campaign launched last summer to flood England’s towns with national flags. Apparently, flag-raising ‘is an act of intimidation and division that is having a real and damaging impact on our communities’. Locals were left under no illusion as to the council’s commitment to end the scourge of patriotism: ‘The council has a responsibility to act where behaviour undermines community cohesion and the safe and inclusive use of public spaces. That is why we are taking firm action.’

(Read the rest of this excellent essay here.)

For centuries, universities have been nations’ thought leaders. Where they led, whole cultures and political movements followed. It’s time for that to end, because it’s very clear that Western academic institutions are leading us straight to cultural suicide and, if the Islamic jihad has its way, to the true Islamic goal: a worldwide caliphate.

I don’t think the institutions can be reformed. They need to be abandoned, with normal people shying away from them and allowing them to rot into obscurity. Otherwise, just as is the case in Oxfordshire, we’ll all be infected. There, the sun hasn’t just set on the British Empire; the last remnant of the Empire is busy setting itself on fire, in an act of suicidal self-loathing.

The Rapid Islamization of Britain; so many unsettling changes now – and to look forward to

x-jozefinselberg

Britain is rapidly Islamizing, and the transformation is taking place quickly now: “The Islamization of Britain is Almost Complete,” by Janet Levy, American Thinker, March 22, 2026:

The extent to which the British government is willing to accommodate Muslim practices is clear in its choice to normalize cousin marriage, ignoring scientific evidence that shows it increases the risk of inheriting recessive disorders. According to a Bradford study, the rate of cousin or relative marriage among immigrant Muslims reaches as high as 46%. This practice is banned in Norway and most American states and is set to be banned in Sweden. Last year, Conservative MP Richard Holden proposed a bill for a similar ban in the U.K.

Cousin-marriage is prevalent in Muslim societies where trust is low, and people choose to marry relatives, especially first cousins, which ensures that property brought to the marriage will remain within the extended family. The effect on health, however, is disastrous. Such a small genetic pool leads to a large number of babies born with genetic defects. To treat such defects has become hideously expensive for the National Health Service. It is British taxpayers who pay for the insistence of so many Muslims to practice cousin marriage.

MP Richard Holden, of course, is quite right in wanting to ban cousin marriage. Instead the British government issued a report on the nonexistent “benefits” of cousin marriage; a huge outcry then forced the government to withdraw it. But the NHS has engaged in a campaign to hire nurses who will specialize in supporting families where cousin-marriage is being practiced, when it should be directing its efforts at stamping out that practice altogether. Cousin-marriage is outlawed in China, North Korea, South Korea, the Philippines, for Hindus in many jurisdictions of India, and in some European countries in the Balkans, as well as in Belgium and Lithuania. It is also banned in 30 of the 50 U.S. states. The reason is always the same: to avoid the disastrous numbers of babies born, as a result of cousin marriages, with congenital defects that are tremendously expensive to treat over a patient’s lifetime. There is no good reason for the U.K. not to follow suit.

Let’s imagine that future Islamized Great Britain that, if nothing drastic is done, will likely come to pass well before the next century. Muslim rule would not require a Muslim majority; even if Muslims constitute far less than a majority, they vote as a solid bloc, and are adept at making alliances with the left that everywhere in Europe has chosen to join forces with Muslims, most notably in France where the communist head of the party La France Insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, is firmly in the Muslim camp. The left has supported Muslim candidates and the Muslim cause par excellence — that is, the goal of destroying Israel and replacing it with the state of “Palestine” from the river to the sea. Just look at how Sadiq Khan became mayor of London, and has been twice re-elected. Muslims make up only 15% of the London population, but have managed to obtain the support of the left, and together they have elected, and twice re-elected, Mayor Khan, whose solicitude for Muslim Londoners is well known.

Imagine Sharia laws supplanting the English common law. In Family Law, will husbands be allowed take up to four wives? Will husbands be allowed to divorce their wives by use of the triple-talaq? Or in Estate Law, will male heirs automatically receive twice as much as female heirs? In Criminal Law, will the testimony of male witnesses be worth twice that of female witnesses? Will homosexuality be outlawed, and its practice punishable by death, as happens in Iran and many other Muslim countries? How brides be as young as Muhammad’s favorite wife, with whom he consummated his marriage when she was nine and he was 54?

So many unsettling changes to look forward to, as Britain, and continental Europe as well, inexorably Islamizes. For example, across Europe Muslim students have caused ruckuses when forced to study certain subjects, such as the Crusades, the history of the Jews, the history of Christianity in Europe, and the Nazi murders of six million Jews. The indiscipline that results has led some schools to submit to Muslim demands, and to spend much less time on such subjects or even to remove them altogether from the history curriculum. Such pressures can only grow pari passu with the inexorable growth in the Muslim population — there are now 47 million of them in Europe.

The Columbus Statue at the White House Is Far More Than a Piece of Marble

Screengrab youtube

In 2020, when the woke revolution replaced smiles and kind words with street violence, BLM’s obsession was tearing down statues. They vandalized Miguel de Cervantes in San Francisco, toppled Father Junípero Serra in the same city, and destroyed Christopher Columbus in Baltimore. The destruction of great icons of Western civilization spread to many European cities as well. Now Donald Trump has installed a replica of the Baltimore Columbus statue at the White House, and yet some people still think it’s an irrelevant gesture. They are wrong. It’s far more than that.

The postmodern Left of the 21st century has given Western society a cosmetic makeover, fully aware that the culture war is won when you can rename things. This has not been a deep ideological revolution but a succession of cultural tweaks, many seemingly trivial, which ultimately achieved their deeper, structural objectives. Remember: ‘Wokeism’ included athletes taking a knee, gendered pronouns in everyday language, and the omnipresent rainbow flag. It is an ideological current seemingly tailor-made for the age of attention deficits, memes, Instagram images, and five-second viral TikTok videos.

The Right tends to overlook the superficial and focus its efforts on the grand philosophy of things: major policies, the economy, employment, international trade alliances, and so on. For much of this century, the Right downplayed the Left’s cosmetic cultural battles as nonsense. Undoubtedly, they were nonsense—but they were not insignificant nonsense.

Foucault laid the groundwork by arguing that power resides not only in laws or force, but in categories and discourses—that is, he believed language is a tool for exercising power and transforming society. Wokeism has essentially been an exercise in Foucauldian power: renaming things, changing categories, with no fear of disregarding logic or biology along the way.

Take the debate over transgender issues: the Left ignored biology and major intellectual debates; we could almost say it simply redefined the linguistic categories of ‘man’ and ‘woman.’ And as long as the Right didn’t recognize the trap, they fared well. The same applies to environmentalism, the war on the countryside and traditional agriculture, the removal of Christian symbols from public spaces, and immigration policy.

Today, the ‘wokeism’ movement is clearly in decline, partly because it went too far in its excesses and partly because, for years, a reaction has been growing throughout the West against the exhaustion caused by so much leftist sectarianism. The key factor: center-right parties, unable to confront wokeism on its own terms, have ceded ground to a new, unapologetic Right that exposes the postmodern Left, lays bare its shameful ideas, and is harvesting substantial results in every election due to its courage.

This is exactly what the Christopher Columbus statue at the White House represents: public recognition of the great civilizing achievement that was the Discovery. Columbus symbolizes the foundation of modern Western civilization, the birth of a prosperous America, the cultural, religious, and political seed of the country that would later lead the Western world. Columbus signifies the crushing of the foolish indigenism embraced by the postmodern Left; it is a tribute to the great European civilizing mission, to how the Spanish enterprise eradicated indigenous savagery and sowed faith, wisdom, law, and hope in those lands.

At the statue’s unveiling, Donald Trump explained who Columbus was: “Christopher Columbus was America’s original hero and one of the bravest and most visionary men to ever walk the face of the Earth.” It is a gesture, of course, but an important one: a way to build a wall against the Left’s cultural poisoning, a recognition that the colonizing adventure was a success and a privilege, not an injustice, and a clear warning to anyone who tries to dismantle the foundations of Western civilization: we will not allow it.

In 2007, the socialist government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero approved the so-called ‘Historical Memory Law,’ aiming to rewrite the history of the Spanish Civil War entirely in service of the far left. In 2022, the social-communist Pedro Sánchez expanded it, making it even more infamous and sectarian. The essence of these laws is cosmetic; among other things, they allowed the wholesale renaming of streets across Spain, erasing any that had connections to Francoism—a purge that extended globally to writers, military figures, and intellectuals who had little to do with Franco. Since then, Spanish streets have been filled with absurd names like “Love,” “Concord,” or “Democracy.” Of course, the next step was removing statues, monuments, and commemorative plaques of any illustrious figures not clearly left-wing.

The People’s Party (PP) opposed the Historical Memory Law in 2007. But when Sánchez expanded and worsened it in 2022, the PP no longer voted against it—they abstained, allowing the law to pass. I recount this Spanish anecdote because it perfectly illustrates how culture wars operate. What was unacceptable to the center-right in 2007 was considered irrelevant in 2022—even when far more extreme and sectarian measures were at stake—so much so that they couldn’t even vote against it. The normalizing jackhammer of left-wing propaganda, in the context of the culture war, had done its work even within the main opposition party.

That is why VOX was born in Spain. That is why a new right emerged across Europe. That is why a Javier Milei became necessary in Argentina. And that is why, in Donald Trump’s second term, no significant gesture in the culture war is ever overlooked as irrelevant. The Columbus statue under Trump is something like the founding charter of the West, a daily reminder that we are in the midst of a reconquest—in the United States and, of course, in Europe.

One last detail I haven’t mentioned: I said the statue is a replica—but it isn’t. Trump’s decision to craft this statue from the remnants salvaged from the one destroyed in Baltimore carries enormous significance. It is not frivolous, not cosmetic—it is much deeper: we are not building a new civilization akin to a previous one, but gathering the remains of the brilliant Christian Western civilization and reconstructing them piece by piece.

French Government Tries to Ban Major Muslim Gathering in Paris for Security Risks, But Court Decision Confirms the Event

The Islamization of France is a fact, with 2,5 million Muslims in Paris and the metropolitan area alone.

Back on Thursday, the French government announced the ban of a major gathering of Muslims planned for the country’s capital.

The head of police said it ‌represented ‘a security risk’, but the decision was later overturned by a French court.

Reuters reported:

“’At the request of the Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, I have issued an order prohibiting the 40th edition of the Annual Meeting of Muslims of France, from April 3 to April 6 at the Paris–Le Bourget Exhibition Centre’, the Paris police chief Patrice Faure said in a post on X.

‘This decision is set within a national and international context marked by heightened tensions and an increased level of terrorist alert, risks ‌of public disorder, and the large police presence on the streets in the coming days’, he said.”

The attempt at a ban came after a foiled bomb attack on Bank of America building in Paris.

But the gathering is happening as planned, after a French court overturned the government’s bid to ban it.

French flags adorn the facade of the Paris administrative court, highlighting its role in authorizing the Annual Gathering of Muslims of France.

 BBC reported:

“The organizers – the Muslims of France (MF) association – sought an emergency injunction to let the event go ahead, arguing that a ban would be a breach of basic liberties.

The administrative court agreed and overturned the government decree, just two hours before the planned 14:00 (13:00 BST) opening.

The court said in its ruling that elements provided by police ‘did not establish the risk of counter-demonstrations, or that the gathering would be targeted by far-right groups’.

[…] Part cultural and religious conference, part trade fair, the gathering used to be an annual event, but has not been held since 2019. Before that it regularly drew tens of thousands of people from across Europe.”

Islam and Islamism: The Wilhelmine Germany parallel

Amin al-Husseini und Adolf Hitler (28. November 1941). Bundesarchiv, Bild 146-1987-004-09A / Heinrich Hoffmann / CC-BY-SA 3.0

The relationship between Islam and Islamism is not one of parent and rebellious child, nor of moderate faith corrupted by a fringe. It is the precise analogue of Wilhelmine Germany and Nazi Germany: a proud, accomplished civilization that nursed a sense of divine mission, celebrated martial glory, and, when humiliated, turned its cultural energies toward apocalyptic revenge.

To pretend otherwise is to repeat the catastrophic error of those who treated Hitlerism as a mere aberration rather than the logical, if monstrous, fulfillment of Wilhelmine dreams.

Both Wilhelmine Germany and the historic Ummah amassed staggering achievements. German engineering, philosophy, music, and military prowess reshaped the modern world; the Islamic world produced algebra, preserved classical learning, built the Taj Mahal and the Alhambra, and conquered empires from Spain to India. Both societies were, at their peaks, capable of genuine levels of tolerance toward Jews-Germany under Bismarck, the Ottoman Empire with its millet system-yet both also harbored a conviction of civilizational superiority.

“Am deutschen Wesen soll die Welt genesen,” the Kaiser’s poets proclaimed: German nature will heal the world. The Ummah’s equivalent is older and no less messianic: the belief that Islam is the final, perfect revelation destined to save humanity under sharia’s shadow.

Both reveled in collective dignity while sacralizing militarism. Wilhelmine Berlin bristled with statues of Frederick the Great and Bismarck; every town square honored the Prussian officer corps. The Islamic world is no different: from Istanbul to Jakarta, public squares and mosques bear the names of the Prophet’s companions-the sahaba-many of whom were military commanders whose conquests were as ruthless as any Hohenzollern campaign:

Khalid ibn al-Walid, known as the “Sword of Allah,” remains especially revered; his undefeated record across more than a hundred battles, including the decisive victory at Yarmouk that shattered Byzantine power in Syria, is still celebrated in sermons, books, and popular media throughout the Muslim world. Muslim chests still swell at the image of scimitar-wielding warriors and the cry “Allahu Akbar!”-precisely the same visceral thrill Germans once felt for spiked helmets and goose-stepping parade.

The Weimar Republic maps neatly onto the postcolonial moment. Both eras were marked by defeat, economic dislocation, and the painful birth of fragile democracies. In Weimar, Jews-long restricted-suddenly could show that they excelled in finance, arts, science, and politics, becoming visible symbols of a new, cosmopolitan order. Their success, rather than inspiring emulation, ignited a fanatical hatred that extremists channeled into conspiracy theories.

Exactly the same pattern repeats today: Israel’s technological, agricultural, and military triumphs amid Arab and Muslim stagnation have made the Jewish state the lightning rod for every failure of postcolonial governance. Instead of studying or being grateful for Israeli drip irrigation or startup culture, Islamists and their leftist useful idiots plot its annihilation. The scapegoat is always the same.

Iran under the Ayatollahs is Nazi Germany redux. Its regime wastes blood and treasure-billions diverted from a collapsing economy-on an apocalyptic nuclear program whose only strategic purpose is the hope for the eventual destruction of the Jewish state. The parallel to Hitler’s decision to divert railcars from the Eastern Front to the death camps is grotesque but exact: rational self-interest sacrificed on the altar of genocidal ideology. The Holocaust cost Germany precious resources; a nuclear Iran will cost the mullahs their regime and their people unimaginable suffering. Yet they press on, because the destruction of Jewish dignity is the one non-negotiable article of faith.

Germany was rescued from itself not by half-measures but by total, systematic denazification and the deliberate renunciation of militarism. The same bitter medicine is required for the Ummah. As long as so many mosques and cultural touchstones continue to honor the warrior companions of the Prophet-men whose biographies celebrate beheadings and slave-taking-as long as Muslim hearts still race at the image of sword-wielding horsemen shouting “Allahu Akbar!,” there will be no durable peace between Muslims and non-Muslims. Cultural DNA matters. You cannot celebrate seventh-century conquests every Friday and then act shocked when some take the lesson literally.

Yet this militarism has an even deeper root: Islam’s primordial contempt for women and femininity itself. A warrior culture cannot tolerate softness, vulnerability, or equality of the sexes; it must veil, segregate, and subordinate the feminine to keep the masculine myth intact. That is why any serious feminist-anyone who genuinely believes in equality-should demand a simple, reciprocal policy in every Western democracy that allows the hijab: Muslim women may cover their hair and neck only if, in their company, husbands and male mahram relatives (fathers, brothers, sons) also cover their hair and neck.

Observant Jewish men already do this. Their hats cover the hair just as they expect their wives to do. Others wear a smaller headcovering, a skullcap, albeit to proclaim there is a Creator above their intellects, but still parallel to their wives. Let Muslim men face the same public bargain. The moment this becomes the law of the land, the hijab will vanish from Western streets.

Almost no Muslim husband or brother will endure the ridicule of walking around in a head-covering scarf to uphold his wife’s or sister’s “modesty.” The experiment will be brutally instructive: the hijab is not, and never was, about female empowerment (a skewed progressive feminist explanation), inner strength, or spiritual dignity. It is a costume that allows women to make the men at home and on the street feel strong, virile, and in control-at the direct expense of the women’s autonomy and freedom.

Germany learned, through fire and ruin, that romanticizing militarism and scapegoating Jews leads to national suicide. The Ummah still refuses the lesson. Until it undergoes its own denazification-until it stops naming its holy places after warlords and its children after conquerors, until it stops thrilling to the scimitar and starts prizing the plow and the pen-there will be no peace.

The choice is not between “moderate Islam” and “extremism.” It is between the post-1949 Federal Republic of Germany and the Third Reich, between a civilization that can outgrow its martial myths and one that chooses to die inside them. The world is watching.

Germany: Iraqi serial offender beats public bus driver into a coma

The crime scene bus stop Sophienstrasse Google Maps

A brutal incident on a public bus is currently shocking the public. A 62-year-old bus driver is in a coma following a violent attack. The suspect is a 13-year-old boy from Iraq, who is said to have previously come to the attention of the police.
According to police, the incident took place on the evening of the 1st of April on a number 90 bus in Leipzig. A group of young people from migrant backgrounds had been causing a disturbance during the journey. When the driver intervened and asked the group to behave more calmly, the situation escalated. According to an official statement, a physical altercation ensued, during which the bus driver was seriously injured.

Further details have since come to light that highlight the extent of the violence. According to these reports, the 13-year-old, who was born in Iraq, is said to have deliberately headbutted the driver several times. The victim then collapsed, bleeding. A stroke was later diagnosed at the hospital, requiring emergency surgery. The man has been in a coma ever since. Medical investigations are currently underway to determine whether the stroke was directly caused by the attacks.

The alleged perpetrator was quickly identified after his escape. However, he faces no criminal consequences: in Germany, the minimum age of criminal responsibility is 14. Instead, youth welfare authorities are now required to consider appropriate measures. Experts point out, however, that options for intervention are limited and places in care facilities are scarce, particularly in the case of very young serial offenders.

UK: Grooming gang survivor hits out at Labour peer accused of mocking national inquiry: ‘It’s disgusting’

Ms Reynolds called for a ‘genuine, heartfelt apology’ over the remarks. Screengrab youtube

A grooming gang survivor has demanded an apology from a Labour peer accused of making light of the national inquiry into the scandal.

Baroness Ayesha Hazarika made the comments during an episode of Times Radio’s Weekend Drivetime show, hosted by journalist Stig Abell.

In the exchange, which has since been shared widely on social media, Ms Hazarika can be heard saying: “I’m like an enabler, I’m a groomer, oh my God. Just because I’m Muslim, stop it, honestly.”

The host replied: “Don’t groom me, Ayesha,” to which she responds, “There will be an inquiry- a judge-led inquiry into me right now.”

Ms Hazarika and Mr Abell can be heard laughing during the discussion.

Grooming gang survivor Ellie Reynolds, who was a victim of abuse in Barrow-in-Furness has now spoken out, demanding an apology from the Labour peer for her remarks.

Ms Reynolds’ ordeal started in 1996 when she was just 13-years-old and lasted for 5 years – during which she was kidnapped, held hostage and gang raped.

Speaking to Patrick Christys on GB News she said: “I think it’s sick. I think it’s disgusting. However, nothing really shocks me anymore when it comes to… people in a position of power.

“From my perspective, would they be laughing and mocking that if it was them or their daughter or their family member?

“I think there should be a genuine, heartfelt apology.”

This follows the launching of a three-year Statutory Independent Inquiry into Grooming Gangs, which will conduct investigations in areas where there is evidence of previous failings.

In addition to the national inquiry, a number of local inquiries will also take place.

Inquiry chair Baroness Anne Longfield, the former children’s commissioner, has said the investigation will not “flinch from uncomfortable truths” and not “shy away” from directly probing the cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds of the perpetrators.

She said: “Children across England and Wales were and are sexually abused and exploited. When they asked for help, they were too often disbelieved, dismissed, or blamed. That is the reality this inquiry exists to address.

“Victims and survivors have every right to ask whether this inquiry will be any different from those that came before. My answer is this: where we can, we will publish our findings as we go, not in a single report years from now. There will be no opportunity for institutions to quietly manage what we find.

“We will follow the evidence wherever it leads. We will not flinch from uncomfortable truths.”

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said: “The grooming gangs scandal is one of the darkest moments in our country’s history, where the most vulnerable people were abused and exploited at the hands of evil child rapists.

“The chair and I have agreed that the Inquiry will be laser-focused on grooming gangs and will explicitly examine the role of ethnicity, religion and culture of the offenders and in the response of institutions.

“There will be no hiding place for the predatory monsters who committed these vile crimes.”

The inquiry will formally begin on April 13 and will have a budget of £65million.

GB News has reached out to Baroness Hazarika, Stig Abell, and Times Radio for comment.

Discovering Chartreuse Elixir: A Very Spiritual Spirit

Karl Gruber / Wikimedia Commons / CC BY-SA 4.0

Some liqueurs are born of craftsmanship, others of fashion; Chartreuse, however, seems to emerge from a more ancient, almost primordial time, where human patience merges with the silence of the mountains. Its story is not merely that of an alcoholic drink, but of a steadfast devotion—to a rule, a place, and a secret. It is for this reason that it still fascinates both connoisseurs of spirituality… and spirits.

It all begins, or almost, with a mystery worthy of a fairy tale.

In 1605, according to a tradition that no one would think to question today, an enigmatic manuscript was handed to the monks of the Chartreuse de Vauvert, nestled in the heart of Paris. This document, attributed to Marshal François Annibal d’Estrées, described a complex formula: that of an “elixir of long life.”

This was no ordinary recipe, but a scholarly, almost alchemical blend combining dozens of plants, roots, and flowers—a body of knowledge that was both medicinal and symbolic. For a long time, this text remained an enigma. The recipe was too complex and too dense to be interpreted, and many dropped the idea of implementing it. But the monks had all the time in the world.

All this did not happen overnight, but the Carthusians are not in a hurry. Founded in 1084 by Saint Bruno in the mountain range that now bears his name, their order lives in radical austerity, consisting of solitude, prayer, and manual labour. For them, the liqueur was neither a vocation nor even a whim, but a means of subsistence. Since the mysterious gift from Marshal d’Estrées, it took the monks many years of experimentation before they finally managed to stabilise the formula. More than a century and a half after the original gift, the apothecary at the order’s mother house, the Grande Chartreuse, decided to study the famous manuscript and finally bring the precious elixir to life. In 1737, he developed a potent preparation intended primarily for medicinal use. Then, in 1764, he adapted this composition to create a liqueur, the so-called  Élixir végétal de la Grande Chartreuse: milder, more accessible, yet still imbued with that botanical intensity that makes it so instantly recognisable.

From then on, Chartreuse was able to step beyond the monastery gates and set out to conquer the world. It captivated people, of course, with its taste—at once sweet and bitter, spicy, almost fiery—but also with everything it suggested: a hidden origin and a production process beyond the ordinary. In its bulbous bottles, its intense colour fascinated and drew the eye. This is the very paradox of this monastic production: the fruit of prayer and silence, designed to heal the body, this drink gradually became an object of desire, quick to set hearts ablaze.

Even more than its flavour, Chartreuse’s appeal lies in its air of secrecy. We know it is made from 130 plants. We can guess at some of them: lemon balm, thyme, angelica, hyssop… But the essentials elude the curious drinker, even the most refined of palates. The complete recipe is known only to two monks at any one time, who are responsible for preparing the herbal mixture. They never travel together, to prevent the secret from being lost should a tragic transport accident occur. These two are also the only members of the community permitted to leave the monastery, travelling to the distillery once or twice a week to check the measurements and the maceration process.

This sparing, almost initiatory, transmission of knowledge gives Chartreuse a rare dimension in the world of spirits: that of a fragile, human know-how that cannot be reproduced on a large scale.

After all, secrecy is just another marketing ploy. Asa Candler, the founder of the Coca-Cola Company, had the idea of presenting the fizzy concoction he’d bought from an Atlanta pharmacist as a trade secret known only to a few employees, carefully locked away by his successors in a legendary safe in Atlanta. But there is nothing of the sort among the Carthusians: according to the vow of Saint Bruno, silence is not a marketing trick, but a rule of life enabling one to earn a place in heaven. Nevertheless, the money thus earned helps to maintain the 22 monasteries of the Carthusian Order scattered across the globe. Half of the order’s annual needs are funded by the liqueur.

Before reaching us today, Chartreuse has faced many setbacks over the centuries. The French Revolution did not spare the monks of the mountains: the community of the Grande Chartreuse was dispersed, the monks expelled, thus bringing production to a halt. France loves fine wines and fine spirits, but the Republic does not love Catholics. Painstakingly rebuilt, Chartreuse was once again driven from its walls in 1903, during the crises leading to the separation of Church and State, in one of the most dramatic and emblematic episodes of that grim period, when the poor monks were driven out into the snow at the point of a crozier. They found refuge in Spain, in Tarragona, where they resumed production.

Amidst relocations, fires, landslides and reconstructions, the liqueur followed an erratic, almost novelistic path, with each episode only serving to reinforce its legend: that of a magical product which no one has ever managed to make disappear.

As soon as the monks’ property was confiscated by the oppressive Third Republic, a few zealous officials did indeed attempt to imitate the famous green liqueur. But, failing to uncover its secret, they managed only to produce a rather mediocre spirit, devoid of any interest, which led the company to bankruptcy. It was not until the end of the Second World War that the expulsion order against the order was finally lifted, and the monks were able to return to their beloved mountains. The distillery finally resumed operations—whilst parallel production continued in Tarragona until 1989.

Despite the vicissitudes of time, Chartreuse’s success has never waned, even attracting counterfeits. To guard against this, the Carthusians registered their trademark as early as 1852 and stepped up their protective measures. Chartreuse thus became one of the first liqueurs to legally defend its identity.

Chartreuse still stands out today for its unique relationship with time. Unlike most spirits, it continues to age in the bottle. Old bottles thus become collector’s items, sometimes sold at staggering prices, like liquid fragments of history. But this ageing is not merely chemical; it is also symbolic. Each bottle embodies the continuity of a gesture repeated for centuries, an unchanging gesture, made possible by the mysterious knowledge of two men dressed in white.

In the 21st century, Chartreuse could have become just another brand. Its centuries-old success and spotless reputation could have opened the door to ever-expanding global markets, but the good monks of Isère chose a different path, they who own 100% of the shares in the production company, Chartreuse Diffusion. In 2018, they treated themselves to a brand-new distillery, representing an investment of around ten million euros: the historic distillery, situated right in the centre of the small town of Voiron, had to close to comply with new industrial standards.

In 2023, they took a historic decision—to voluntarily limit production to 1.2 million litres per year, or 2 million bottles. The monks refuse to increase volumes indefinitely, preferring to preserve their way of life and their environment. This decision, rare in a world dominated by growth, contributes to the product’s regular scarcity—and thus to its aura. “Any private shareholder would have followed demand, quietly changed one or two ingredients, and ramped up production,” explains Bertrand De Nève, CEO of Chartreuse Diffusion, who works for the monks. The heirs of Saint Bruno made this decision overnight, and it is irrevocable.

Scarcity creates value. Sales of the liqueur are now rationed across the globe, whilst waiting lists at distributors are stretching to several months. But prices are not rising: the monks have no intention whatsoever of engaging in speculation. On the other hand, at auctions, vintage bottles can fetch astronomical prices.

The story of Chartreuse thus serves as a reminder, in a world where unlimited consumption has become the norm, that only restraint fuels desire. And whilst Chartreuse may well become the star of trendy cocktails favoured by the wildest jet-set, it remains nonetheless the fruit of the monks’ silence and an image of divine eternity. There is something exceptional in this fidelity to order. This spirit thus embodies, with rare power, this authentic spiritual truth: like the mystery of faith, certain things are better left partially unexplained.
