One of the police officers stabbed in a knife attack in Schaerbeek on Thursday evening has died from his injuries, according to the Brussels prosecutor’s office. Austria To Place Ukrainian Refugees in Luxury Hotel After Running Out Of Space
The Austrian city of Vienna is set to house 350 Ukrainian refugees in a luxury hotel in the centre of the Austrian capital as the country struggles to accommodate refugees and asylum seekers.
The 350 Ukrainian refugees, all women and children, will be residing in the currently vacant Hotel de France, located on the famous ring road that circles the heart of the city.
According to Austria’s Interior Ministry, a total of 25,921 Ukrainians live in Vienna currently but the vast majority, around 80 per cent, are currently living in private apartments, rather than hotels or migrant centres, Kronen Zeitung reports.
However, inflationary costs have led to a lack of available housing for refugees, leading to the 350 women and children being placed in the luxury hotel, which had previously been used to house travellers undergoing quarantine during the coronavirus pandemic.
The accommodation for the Ukrainian refugees comes as Austria lacks space for asylum seekers crossing illegally across the Balkan route and has been forced to erect tent camps in certain areas of the country.
Around 40 tents, which can house up to eight people each were put up at three different points along Austria’s border with Slovenia last month as Austria’s capacity to house 8,000 had already been filled.
The deployment of the tents for asylum seekers has been criticised by some, including in St. Georgen im Attergau, where local mayor Ferdinand Aigner rejected a federal government plan to erect 17 asylum tents in the town and went on to reject a proposal to build container housing to house 130 asylum seekers.
Austria has also seen a surge of migrants applying for asylum this year, with the country reporting 70,000 asylum applications from January to September, a number approaching the levels of the 2015 migrant crisis, which saw 90,000 applications.
The majority of the arrivals in Austria come across the Balkan route to Europe, which has seen a huge surge of activity this year, according to the European Union border agency Frontex, which reported in October that numbers had increased by 170 per cent compared to last year.
“The Western Balkan route continues to be the most active migratory route into the EU with 19,160 detections in September, twice as many as a year ago. The high number of illegal border crossings can be attributed to repeated crossing attempts by migrants already present in the Western Balkans,” the agency said.
TikTok video shows man mocking German energy crisis by turning up heating to max in asylum camp
A man professing to be an asylum seeker at a camp in Germany is mocking the country’s energy crisis by filming himself on TikTok turning the gas heating up to the max in his asylum home.
The short video, posted on the social media platform back in September, was accompanied with the caption: “Life as asylum in camp in Germany… You don’t care about bills and it’s on 5 all night.”
The post has been viewed more than 750,000 times to date, prompting furious German taxpayers to express their disgust at the provocative and wasteful act in the comments.

“Yeah, it’s me paying with my taxes!” wrote one social media user.
“And the hardworking citizens will pay (for) their right,” posted another in response to the video while a third asked: “Is this what I pay for?”
Many questioned why the unidentified man was choosing to act in such a profligate way after being taken in by the country and provided with accommodation and refuge.
Although it has not been possible to verify the account’s authenticity, in another TikTok post, the man showed footage of his current living arrangements at what he claims is an asylum camp in Germany. He revealed he has been living at the facility for over three years.
“So, I uploaded a video saying what we have for breakfast in the asylum camp. It was a very simple video, but the comments and the haters, I just want to show you how we are living in the asylum camp.
“I am in this place since more than three years. People must not stay more than 2 or 3 months maximum. Look at this room. We are six persons in this square meters. Yes, thanks to Germany,” he said.
Germany is currently undergoing a gas crisis and there are fears there won’t be enough energy to see the country through the winter.
Schools, nursing homes, and other public buildings have been ordered to dramatically reduce their gas consumption, as the country struggles to fill its storage facilities with gas reserves.
Public buildings will not be permitted to be heated in excess of 19 degrees Celsius this winter, following an announcement by Economy Minister Robert Habeck.
Many cities have already lowered the temperature in public swimming pools and drastically reduced city lighting. Such consumption-saving measures will even see some traffic lights ceasing to operate throughout the winter months.
Alessia Piperno released by Iran announces Meloni
The Iranian authorities have released Alessia Piperno and the young woman is set to return to Italy after an “intense diplomatic effort”, Premier Giorgia Meloni’s office said in a statement on Thursday.
The statement said Meloni had personally informed Piperno’s parents of her release via telephone and “thanked everyone who contributed to enabling Alessia to embrace her family again”.
The woman was detained in Iran on her 30th birthday in September.

Man yells in subway U8 in Berlin: “Allahu Akbar” and “I’ll kill all Germans”
According to police, the as yet unknown man shouted his threat loudly and repeatedly in an underground train on the U8 line at around 11 am on February 19, 2022. The police are now searching for him in public for disturbing the public peace by threatening to commit a crime.
He shouted: “Allahu Akbar” and “I will kill all Germans”! By releasing images from a surveillance camera, Berlin police are looking for a man who loudly shouted threats in the underground U8.
According to the police, the unknown man left the train at Hermannstraße underground station and moved to the suburban railway track, where he boarded the suburban train S42 in the direction of Südkreuz.
The police describe the wanted man as a 30 to 40-year-old man with a slim build. He is said to have been wearing a black jacket, trainers and a patterned hood on his jacket or pullover at the time of the crime.
