New data: Number of Muslims in Austria doubled to 745,000 since 2001

Some Austrian Christians might be a little surprised by this new survey by Statistics Austria: The fact that 745,600 Muslims already live in Austria and 284,000 of them in Vienna is a huge increase compared to 2001 – after all, there are currently as many Muslims living in Vienna as there are inhabitants of Linz.

The growth of the Islamic religious community in Austria has been documented by statisticians for 50 years: in 1971 there were 22,300 Muslims living in Austria, in 1981 76,900, by 1991 the number had doubled to 158,800, in 2001 there were already 339,000 and now last year 745,600.

Vienna is currently home to by far the largest number of Muslims: 284,900 according to Statistics Austria. This means that 14.8 per cent of the Viennese are members of the Islamic religious community – and only 31.8 per cent are Roman Catholics (34 per cent of the people living in the federal capital have no religious affiliation).

In Vorarlberg, too, the share of Muslims in the total population is high at 12.2 per cent. Strikingly, in the provinces of Tyrol (66.2 per cent), Burgenland (65.5 per cent), Carinthia (63.4 per cent), Styria (63.3 per cent), Upper Austria (62.3 per cent), Vorarlberg (60.7 per cent) and Lower Austria (58.1 per cent), the proportion of Roman Catholics remains high – only in Vienna is this figure far below 50 per cent (31.8 per cent).

In 1951, almost 90 % of the population were still members of the Roman Catholic Church. By 2021, there was a decline of 34 percentage points. While the number of people of the Protestant and Old Catholic faiths also decreased significantly during this period, there was a significant increase among members of the Orthodox churches as well as Islam.

The proportion of people who did not feel they belonged to any faith community in 2021 is highest in Vienna with over a third (34.1%), followed by Styria (22.6%) and Lower Austria (20.5%). Carinthia (16.5 %) and Burgenland (16.8 %), on the other hand, had the lowest proportions of persons with no religious affiliation.

Sharia in Italy: Burned with an iron because she did not wear a veil

She was abused in her parents’ home for months, maybe even years: Her mother allegedly even burned her with an iron, her brother not only beat her but even went so far as to hit her with a bottle. An affair that has now led to a sentence of three years for the elder brother and four months for the mother: The sister-in-law also stood trial, but was acquitted.
This was the verdict of the court of Brescia (Italy) in a trial for ill-treatment and assault initiated following the complaint (2019) of a young girl of Pakistani origin, who was only 15 years old at the time.

The girl, who was harassed by her Islamic relatives, reportedly ran away from home several times until she reported the incidents. She was later placed in a sheltered community and even attempted to take her own life in the family home. According to the public prosecutor’s office, represented by prosecutor Donato Greco, the abuse continued for months. However, this was always denied by the family members, although the judges eventually acknowledged they were guilty.

German Elections Might Be Re-Run in Berlin Over Vote Irregularities

Last year’s German federal elections in Berlin were so riddled with irregularities that at least six areas in the capital should have a do-over, the country’s elections administrator said this week.

In the first-ever public hearing of the election examination committee of the German parliament (Bundestag), MPs were told by elections administrator George Thiel that half of Berlin’s constituencies (six of twelve) had experienced enough irregularities on the September 26th election last year to warrant a repeat of the vote.

Thiel said that the elections experienced “a complete systemic failure” and questioned: “What else has to happen that we see elections as repeatable or illegal?”

The election, which was held amid coronavirus restrictions, was also plagued by the fact that it was scheduled on the same day as the Berlin Marathon, which caused traffic jams, resulting in some polling stations being closed for up to two hours for lack of ballots, Tagesspiegel reported.

Thiel also reported that over 250 stations were kept open past the 6:30 cut off time, wrong ballots were used, and underage people were allowed to vote, as has been previously reported by Germany’s public broadcaster.

The six Berlin constituencies pointed to for potential re-elections included Mitte, Pankow, Reinickendorf, Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and Berlin-Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The elections administrator also said that the Reinickendorf constituency could have its vote overturned as it was decided by such a narrow margin.

In last year’s elections, former Chancellor Angela Merkel’s centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) suffered a humiliating loss  to the leftist Social Democrat Party (SPD), which secured 25.7 per cent of the vote compared to 24.1 per cent for the CDU.

As the SPD failed to secure enough of the vote share to govern the country outright, now-Chancellor Olaf Scholz was forced to form a coalition government with the German Greens and the Free Democrats (FDP).

The CDU has seized on the voting irregularities, with the party’s Berlin Secretary-General Stefan Evers saying: “While in other parts of the country the Bundestag election was organized flawlessly despite the flood disaster, the election itself became a disaster in Berlin.

“It is obvious that the mistakes of the Senate are so serious that at least large parts of the Bundestag and parliamentary elections must be repeated. Probably the election to the state parliament is even flawed overall.”

While the six constituencies would likely not be enough to overturn the national results of the election, a revote could serve to further damage the leftist Chancellor Scholz, whose party last week lost a local election to the CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia, a bellwether state.

“Protect your families, you infidels. I will cut your throats like I did in Syria”. : Man convicted of threats in France but acquitted of glorifying terrorism

On the night of May 21-22, he was provoked by the noise of his neighbours and shouted insults at them for over an hour. With two bottles of vodka in his pocket, he recited the encyclopaedia of insults from A to Z, garnished with a few references to Daech. “Protect your families, infidels. I will cut your throats, as I did in Syria. I will drink your blood.” The group of young partygoers across the street, laughing more than worrying, videotape the scene.

The Magistrate is trying to ascertain whether the offence of glorification of terrorism has been committed. According to case law, such an offence only exists if the accused attempts to incite or arrange terrorism. Otherwise, it is a simple threat. ” I don’t know anything about it at all. I don’t even have an Arab background or anything,” the accused claims awkwardly. I’m just a normal Spaniard.” For the prosecution, the remarks made in public may constitute an endorsement. He demands eighteen months in prison, ten of them suspended.

“The qualification trumps the real personality. It’s more pathetic than anything else,” says Camille Fournier-Guinut for the defence. The lawyer recalls that her client, who is undergoing rehabilitation, “has taken a big step forward in terms of criminal law”. “He needs a sentence that will allow him to get away from alcohol. He is not a dangerous lunatic”. The court agrees. The 30-year-old, who was acquitted of glorifying terrorism, will be given a total of six months in prison without parole and three months on probation. He will serve his sentence in semi-freedom*.Sud-Ouest

*Semi-freedom is a form of execution for custodial sentences that allows the sentenced person to pursue a professional activity, attend classes, vocational training or internships, undergo medical treatment or participate in the life of his or her family outside prison, with any other available time necessarily spent inside prison.Wikipedia

Outrage after Henry Kissinger suggests peace settlement with Russia

Ukraine has reacted with outrage to comments by longtime US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger on urgent peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.

According to a report by the AFP news agency, Kissinger told an audience at the World Economic Forum in Davos that “ideally” the Ukrainian border would be restored as it once was.

Kissinger: Russia should not be underestimated

Kissinger has appealed to the government in Kiev to give up territory and start negotiations “before there are upheavals and tensions that are not easy to overcome”. He therefore warned the West not to intervene even more in the war. One should not underestimate Russia’s position of power within Europe. If the old borders are restored, it is no longer in the interests of Ukraine’s freedom to continue the war.

“The test of policy is how it ends, not how it begins. Far too often the Ukrainian issue is posed as a showdown: whether Ukraine joins the East or the West. But if Ukraine is to survive and thrive, it must not be either side’s outpost against the other,” according to the elderly statesman.

“The European Union must recognize that its bureaucratic dilatoriness and subordination of the strategic element to domestic politics in negotiating Ukraine’s relationship to Europe contributed to turning a negotiation into a crisis.” He repeated that Ukraine should not join NATO, a position he took seven years ago.

Social media users rooting for Ukraine were beside themselves with fury.

Zelensky’s team is seething with anger

Ukrainian presidential adviser Alexey Arestovich chose to use obscenities to put an end to any notion of peace talks: “Go fuck yourselves with such proposals, you dumb fucks, to trade Ukrainian territory a little bit! Are you fucking crazy? Our children are dying, soldiers are stopping shells with their own bodies, and they are telling us how to sacrifice our territories. This will never happen,”Arestovich said in an interview on Wednesday.

Zelensky himself said on Wednesday that Ukraine would not stop the war until the Russian President “understands reality”. It is not clear what the Ukrainian leader was alluding to after the mass surrender of his soldiers in Mariupol recently. Speaking to an audience at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he said that Ukraine would fight until it recovered all of Russian-speaking territory.

The Ukrainian President said that Moscow should withdraw its troops back to the lines in place before Russia began its invasion on February 24. “That might be a first step towards talks,” he said.

On Monday he had called for tougher sanctions against Russia and invited international companies shunning Russia to set up operations in the economically already devastated Ukraine.

Advisor to the Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, Mykhailo Podolyak, also interpreted this statement by Kissinger as an appeal for a cession of territory to Russia. On Telegram on Wednesday he tore into the “pro-Russian lobbyists in Europe.”

“We do not sell our citizens, territories or sovereignty. This is a clear red line. Ukrainian society has paid a terrible price and will not allow anyone to even take a step in this direction – no government and no country,” Podoliak said.

It’s a good thing that the Ukrainians in the trenches did not have time to listen to the “Davos scaremongers”. They are “a little busy defending freedom and democracy,” he tweeted. He also posted a photo of Kissinger shaking hands with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
