“I will destroy your family, your unborn children will be born handicapped. You son of Hitler” – inconceivable threats that serial offender Ismail S. (27) uttered against a police officer. On Monday, the Eritrean was on trial for the third time for an act of violence.

According to the indictment, Ismail S. had knocked down a man with a beer bottle at the tram stop Merianplatz in the Gorbitz district of Dresden in June 2021, who collapsed bleeding and unconscious.

According to the police report, several residents had previously caught the refugee from Africa, who had apparently loudly demanded money from passers-by on the Wölfnitzer Ring. Ismail S. hid under a balcony after the bloody deed, where he was arrested by the police officer.

“I did not harm anyone,” the Eritrean said in court. But the serial offender already threatened and injured a woman in 2018 who was defending herself against sexual harassment.

He is currently serving a 16-month sentence for threatening children and injuring a man with a knife. Verdict will follow.

On Monday afternoon, an as yet unknown man burned a copy of the Bible in broad daylight in the Niendorf district of Hamburg, shouting “Allahu Akbar” several times. The police are looking for witnesses.

Passers-by became aware of the man and called the police. In the course of the search, the suspect could not be traced.

He is described as follows:

• Male
• about 25 to 35 years old
• about 1.75 m
• Mediterranean appearance
• strong figure
• was wearing blue jeans and white trainers, among other things
• was carrying a black rucksack

The State Security Service has started a preventive police investigation.

The supermarket chain Leclerc has apologized to Muslims for stigmatizing them by mentioning that the shortage of sunflower oil was in part caused by certain social groups needing the product to celebrate religious holidays such as Ramadan when that oil is used to fry lamb.

The CEO of Leclerc Michel-Edouard Leclerc rushed out an apology after faced with calls for a boycott of the chain. He apologized for stigmatizing an already disadvantaged population with his remarks and for hurting their feelings.

NUPES (Nouvelle Union Populaire écologiste et sociale) is the alliance of the left made up of Mélenchon’s party, the socialist PS, the communists, and the Greens (EELV) which is contesting the National Assembly elections. In the Charente region, the PS candidate Jerome Lambert was to represent NUPES, but he has been withdrawn for criticizing same-sex marriage and IVF treatment for lesbian couples and single women. 

He has been told homophobia will not be tolerated on the left and may now stand as an independent, but the entire incident shows just how far the French left has radicalized.

However, political correctness does not always win out in the end.

Éric Zemmour has been found to be not guilty for his evaluation of French history in World War II — the verdict came after the election but is nevertheless welcome.

After remarking that the Petain government had saved many Jews, he was taken to court for Holocaust denial. He had clear evidence to back up his remarks that indeed 90 percent of French Jews survived the war and that he is himself a Jew. 

Unfortunately, French courts are usually lining up behind political correctness. For instance, in 2016 a court refused to sentence a left-wing man for burning a French flag. The unlimited right to demonstrate was seen as more important than national symbols such as the flag. The court ruling even went as far as saying that though burning the flag may not be elegant, it is not something which should be condemned.

The all-in-one swimsuit, used by some Muslim women to cover their bodies and hair while bathing, has become almost as topical as ice cream and sun hats during France’s holiday season in recent years.

Seen as a symbol of creeping Islamism by its critics and an affront to France’s secular traditions, many right-wingers and some feminists would like to ban it outright.

It is prohibited in most state-run pools — for hygiene, not religious reasons — where strict swimwear rules apply to all, including men who are required to squeeze into tight-fitting trunks.

The move applies across the board, meaning men will able to wear long shorts and women can also bathe topless in the Alpine city’s pools.

Grenoble’s mayor, Eric Piolle, one of the country’s highest profile Green politicians who leads a broad left-wing coalition at the city council, has championed the move but run into a fierce campaign of opposition.

He managed to rally enough votes at a city council meeting to approve the measure, despite not having the support of his own EELV party which distanced itself from the measure.

The regional spat has put the burkini back in the headlines nationally, animating French talk shows and the political class ahead of parliamentary elections next month.

The issue of how people dress for the pool touches on highly sensitive topics in France, including fears about the influence of Islam and threats to the country’s cherished secularism.

The right to worship freely is constitutionally protected, but the French state is also bound by law to be neutral in religious matters, including inside institutions.

“The burkini aims, purely and simply, to impose Islamist values at the heart of bathing areas and public leisure pursuits,” an open letter written by opposition councillors in Grenoble said last week.

Attempts by several local mayors in the south of France to ban the burkini on Mediterranean beaches in the summer of 2016 kicked off the first firestorm around the bathing suit.

The rules, introduced after a string of terror attacks in France, were eventually struck down as discriminatory.

Three years later, a group of women in Grenoble caused a splash by forcing their way into a pool with burkinis, leading the prime minister at the time to insist that the rules should be followed.

French sports brand Decathlon also found itself at the centre of a similar row in 2019 when it announced plans to sell a “sports hijab” enabling Muslim women to cover their hair while running.

Monday’s vote in Grenoble “is an important moment for everyone concerned and their allies, but also in the fight against Islamophobia and control over women’s bodies”, local campaign group Citizens’ Alliance wrote on its Facebook page.

Demonstrations supporting and opposing the move are also planned in the city following the council meeting where mayor Piolle is expected to succeed in pushing through the change.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has requested a prison term of from four to twelve years against five suspected Tajik IS terrorists. This was announced by the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court on Tuesday. The trial against the alleged terrorist cell of the “Islamic State” (IS) in Germany began there a year ago. The accused all lived in North Rhine-Westphalia – most recently in Essen, Kreuztal, Neuss, Selfkant and Siegen. They are between 25 and 34 years old.

In their indictment, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office had accused the suspected Islamists, among other things, of planning an assassination attempt on an critic of Islam in Neuss. The murder of the Youtube channel administrator is said to have been narrowly prevented by the intervention of a special unit. However, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office had only raised the charge of preparing a terrorist attack against one of the defendants in the pleadings. According to the prosecution, a semi-automatic weapon with a removed serial number and a silencer was to be used for the murder. When the weapon was handed over, a special unit had intervened.

The Islam critic Amir A. (“Ex-Muslims Enlighten”) had reported on Youtube in April 2020 that another assassination attempt on him had failed. “These lunatics had even obtained weapons,” he said. “By a hair’s breadth they would have succeeded.”

The court had already sentenced another suspected IS terrorist in the group to seven years in prison in a separate trial. The terror cell is said to have formed in January 2019. The defence lawyers’ closing arguments are now scheduled in the trial. A final date for the sentencing has not yet been set.

On Saturday morning, the Federal Police arrested a 21-year-old Moroccan man at Cologne Central Station after he exposed his genitals and performed obscene acts in front of a 33-year-old woman from Troisdorf. Afterwards, he had to answer to a magistrate.

At around 6 a.m. on Saturday morning ( May 14), the federal police intervened in a reported brawl at the main railway station in Cologne. On the spot, however, the facts turned out to be different than expected: Two people had been shoving each other on the platform and arguing loudly.

A 33-year-old female employee of Deutsche Bahn AG called the federal police on her two-way radio. In the meantime, a third person turned to her, opened his trousers, exposed his genitals and manipulated them in her direction. Visibly shocked, the 33-year-old reported the situation to the officers who arrived.

The accused was not aware of any guilt and stated that this was “normal in Germany” and then insulted the police officers. The federal police officers arrested the homeless man on an expedited basis and brought him before a magistrate on charges of exhibitionism. A video analysis was arranged and added to the evidence. The decision of the magistrate was a custodial sentence.

A 40-year-old Afghan man will have to stand trial before the Klagenfurt Regional Court next Thursday. He allegedly tried to kill his wife with a carpet knife in September. Especially explosive: The 9-year-old son witnessed all this.

The woman was admitted to the Villach hospital with several cuts to her neck and back. According to the indictment, the Afghan woman had, among other things, a 29 centimetre long and deeper cut on her throat. The crime was allegedly triggered by an argument about the arranged marriage of the two. The victim had wanted to divorce her husband for years. The alleged crime was preceded by a counselling session for divorce at a women’s counselling centre.

Particularly explosive: the couple’s 9-year-old son also witnessed the loud argument. When his father attacked his mother, the boy reacted with presence of mind and ran to the neighbours. They finally alerted the police.
