A Canadian university publishes an illustration against homophobia with two women wearing hijabs about to kiss, Muslims oppose it and start a petition, the picture is removed

A Western University social media post supporting the fight against homophobia included an illustration of two women in hijabs about to kiss – sparking a backlash from London’s Muslim community that forced school officials to delete it.

The image, posted on the school’s Instagram account Tuesday to mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, was met with a firestorm of criticism from people who were offended by the imagery.

They said the post was “inappropriate” and “disrespectful” because the hijab, an Islamic veil, has religious and spiritual connotations. Wrote one person: “Shame on you Western for such an insulting mockery post to my religion.”

In response, school officials initially appeared to stand behind the poster, noting they understood “how complex and intersectional this topic is” and that the “imagery may be upsetting to some Muslims.” But on Wednesday, a Western official who oversees equity, diversity and inclusion issued a statement noting the image had been removed.

“We believe this presents an opportunity for genuine, thoughtful discussion about how we can best support members of the Queer Muslim community, and those from all faiths and backgrounds within the 2SLGBTQ+ community,” said Opiyo Oloya.

“In order to promote that discussion, we have removed the image from the post to not distract from these important conversations.”

One Muslim community leader, Iman Abd Alfatah Twakkal, said the London Muslim community was drafting a response to the images, which he called “inappropriate.”

“We respect the human rights of everyone as protected under Ontario’s human rights bill,” he said.  “While we appreciate that the intent is to promote inclusion the poster is doing the opposite . . . singling a Muslim religious symbol in that setting is inappropriate.”

The poster also sparked a petition demanding the school remove the depiction of the Muslim women. The petition had more than 2,000 signatures as of Wednesday morning.

“It should be made clear that this is not an attack on the LGBT+ community, and the existence of queer Muslims is acknowledged,” the petition reads. “What is portrayed is extremely disrespectful, insensitive and completely imperceptive to the Muslim community at large.”

There was also support for the poster on social media. Wrote one Twitter user: “I cannot believe people are mad that it acknowledges that gay Muslims exist.”

White House dismisses 1,160-point stock plunge as ‘not something that we keep an eye on every day’

By Monica Showalter

The monster 1,160 point stock drop on the Dow Jones Industrial Average Wednesday, the highest drop since the advent of the pandemic in 2020 was kind of a … nothingburger for the Biden White House.

According to the Washington Examiner:

The White House downplayed Wednesday’s drop in the stock market and defended the Federal Reserve’s independence after interest rate hikes to curb high inflation.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1,160 points in the worst day of trading since June 2020 as investors expect further rate increases despite assurances from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. Many economists think the Fed has been too slow to act to control the price spikes.

“Nothing has changed in how we see the stock market,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at Wednesday’s briefing. “That’s not something that we keep an eye on every day.”

Seems the Sleepy Joe White House is doing its sleeping. And why wouldn’t they? The private sector is full of price gougers, tax cheats, hoarders, wreckers, and other bogeymen of the left. It’s not about people’s 401(K)s, which is how normal Americans see it. Of course they don’t watch stocks, unless perhaps they are in Congress and there’s some inside trading to be had. Joe, of course, watches money matters intensely too no matter what he claims as a matter of feathering his nest. The abandoned Hunter Biden laptop emails reveal that well enough.

Besides that, Biden has this pattern as the defining feature of his presidency — ignoring events, dismissing anyone warning about them as a conspiracy theorist or callin the problem non-existent or all in our heads — until it gets too big to ignore. We’ve seen this in Biden’s organization of the Afghanistan pullout, in his COVID response, in his pathetic reaction to the rise in oil prices, in his handing of inflation — transitory, rich man’s problem, price gouging, Putin-did-it — and in his current response to baby formula supply-chain and federal shutdown shortages. He’s always reacting, always denying, and then always getting caught flat-footed.

Which is bad stuff, since stock prices are a hell of a lot more than presumed private sector badness for the White House to ignore. Yes, prices go up, and prices go down, and in recent years, there have been big swings.

But stocks also are anticipatory signals, forecasting what the market is expecting on the horizon — in this case, recession, inflation, stagflation, supply chain issues, and an economy grinding to a halt.

Biden makes a big deal about reading all his fancy intelligence reports. But when news is right there in front of his face, well, Sleepy Joe goes back to sleep. Perhaps he’ll get around to reading about it in a few days.

“Unconstitutional”: Headscarf ban in Austrian kindergartens falls

The headscarf ban in kindergartens, which is still in force at the moment, falls. The measure will no longer be included in the new 15a agreement between the federal and state governments, the Federal Chancellery confirmed to the APA. The Constitutional Service had previously come to the conclusion in a statement available to the APA that the headscarf ban “should not be compatible with the Federal Constitution”.

A new 15a agreement is currently being negotiated between the federal and state governments, as the current regulation expires at the end of August. One of the last sticking points was the headscarf ban – the federal states had resisted combining the issues of childcare and the headscarf ban and questioned the constitutional conformity of the regulation. For elementary schools, the regulation introduced by the ÖVP-FPÖ government has already been repealed by the Constitutional Court (VfGH).

The new 15a agreement could now be presented tomorrow, Friday, as part of the state governors’ conference in Vorarlberg. This should include a “kindergarten billion” distributed over the next five years, with which the federal states will receive money for the compulsory kindergarten year, the expansion of the offer and language support.

France: A woman stabbed in the neck by a hitchhiker who shouted “Allah Akbar” after giving him a lift and helping him find a hotel room

On Tuesday May 17, 2022, shortly before midnight, a couple travelling by car in the area of Chantilly (Oise) sees a man hitchhiking. The couple stops to give him a lift. The man did not speak French and asked them to take him to the Campanile hotel near the road D1016.

After arriving at their destination at around 00:20, the couple escorted the man to the reception of the hotel complex. As they have no proof of identity, the handover of keys does not take place.

“For reasons yet to be clarified, the same person then physically attacked the young woman by holding a knife to her neck,” explains the Senlis prosecutor. The woman then fled to a room behind the bar of the hotel restaurant.

I saw the woman running back to the door, bleeding profusely. When she entered the reception, she explained that he had shouted “Allah Akbar”. There was blood on the floor everywhere she ran.

Outside, “customers” intervened and gave the attacker a lot of blows, whereupon he fled. The seriously injured man was arrested by the gendarmerie 200 metres from the scene. In order to subdue him, the gendarmes used a stun gun twice, as he was behaving in a threatening manner. Two gendarmes were also injured during the arrest.

Victims and gendarmes testified that the man “seemed to be saying prayers in Arabic during the crime and during his arrest. (…) The national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office was informed. Actu Oise

Tensions between Corsicans and Islamists in French prisons

The death of Yvan Colonna in March this year has brought to light the conflicting ideologies that run through the prison milieu.

At the centre of these tensions within the prison milieu are two main communities that were brought into the light by the murder of Yvan Colonna in March this year: the Corsican nationalists and the Islamists. (…) “Many have looked at them with a slanted dismissive glance, especially the Islamists, because they associated them with people who are attached to their country and culture and are not very welcoming to strangers,” agrees David, who is “convinced” that the Colonna case will exacerbate the situation.

The tensions between these two groups are not new. In the mid-1990s, the prison faced a process of “religious polymorphism” as Islamist and terrorist inmates arrived. “These will gradually constitute themselves as a community, replacing the Eastern European communities that were in the majority at the time, which were not focused on religion,” debates Meyer, a researcher specialising in countering Islamist radicalisation in prisons, who wishes to keep his last name secret for security reasons. “Once they are established, they will start organising collective prayers during the walks, networking in the workrooms and putting pressure on the other inmates to regulate life in prison,” adds a former head of several prisons who wishes to remain anonymous.

The Corsicans, on the other hand, will not give in so easily. “They have shown the greatest resistance, and this despite the fact that many prisoners have converted to Islam, 25 % as of 2010,” estimates Meyer, who derives these figures from empirical studies in five central houses. Since then, conflicts between these communities have continued, as has proselytism. According to the prison administration’s figures in September 2021, 600 of the approximately 68,000 detainees would be “ordinary detainees suspected of radicalisation” (DCSR).

However, the religious dimension is not the only one that structures relations in prisons. Racism, for example, also produces antagonisms. “In one prison I worked at, the blacks were totally opposed to the Arabs because they felt that they had played a fundamental role in the enslavement of their ancestors. In another institution, the black Africans were against the blacks from the Dom-Toms, accusing them of being worse than the whites in terms of contempt for their continent,” explains Farhad Khosrokhavar, sociologist and research director at EHESS. He adds: “Prison can even create forms of community that do not exist outside prison. For example, a white prisoner had told me that he had joined forces with other whites because they were in the minority. They felt they were the true representatives of the nation, in contrast to the others who were strangers in their eyes”.

(…) “When the prisoners start their sentence, they live in the arrival area for a few days. There, their profile is determined – age, religion, smoker or non-smoker – so that, if there is room, we can put them together with inmates who are as similar to them as possible and thus avoid tensions later on,” argues Jérôme Massip, General Secretary of the Prison Officers’ Union.
