German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa penned a column published by the Le Monde daily newspaper in France just hours after the televised debate between presidential contenders Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen, in which they called on the French people to vote for Emmanuel Macron, who they label the “democratic candidate,” in Sunday’s second-round election.

The letter states the choice facing the French people “is crucial for France and for all of us in Europe” and claims their choice is between a “democratic candidate who believes that France is stronger in a powerful and autonomous European Union, and a far-right candidate, who openly sides with those who attack our freedom and our democracy.”

The three leaders claim to be of the belief that the war launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin against Ukraine “targets the values ​​that France and our countries defend: democracy, sovereignty, freedom and the rule of law” and carries the risk of “redrawing borders by force, as (…) has been done so many times in our bloody past.”

Different visions for Europe

“Populists and the extreme right in all our countries have made Vladimir Putin an ideological and political model, echoing his nationalist demands,” the European leaders claim, insisting that populists across Europe have copied Putin’s attacks on minorities and diversity. “They share his dream of a uniform nation,” they write, adding that Europeans must not forget it even if populists now seek to distance themselves from Russia.

The concept of ever closer union is one of the central divisions in the presidential duel between Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron: the former historically wanting to gradually replace the European Union with an alliance of nations; the latter demanding greater collective sovereignty and European autonomy.

The retired Swiss Colonel Jacques Baud has written a lengthy article in which he paints a completely different picture of the war in Ukraine than portrayed in the Western media. The former NATO analyst helped Ukraine build its army for years.

Baud noted that the so-called Russian-backed separatists in Donbass were never supported in any way by Russia for the past eight years. After the Maidan coup in 2014, the Russian-speaking part of the population – civilians – were attacked by Ukrainian soldiers. In cities like Odessa, Mariupol, Luhansk and Donetsk massacres were carried out by them. Since then, a civil war has raged in the country.

Baud was working as an army analyst for NATO in 2014, when his team discovered that the rebels’ weapons were not supplied by Russia, but by Russian-speaking defectors from the Ukrainian armed forces.

How did he know this?

There was a massive exodus, after which Baud had to help to rebuild the image of the Ukrainian army. This turned out to be a long and arduous process. In the process, extremist paramilitary militias, including the Azov Battalion, sprung up.

In 2020, 40 percent of the Ukrainian army consisted of these militias, Baud said. He describes the members as cruel fanatics. They were funded, trained and armed by the United States, Great Britain, Canada and France.

Baud further pointed out that President Zelensky announced last year that he intended to take Crimea and he sent his troops south to complete the task. In February, the Ukrainian army began bombing Donbass on a large scale.

The former colonel added that US President Biden announced on February 17 that Russia would attack Ukraine within days. How did he know this? Since February 16, the civilian population of Donbass has been massively bombed by the Ukrainian army. The European Union, media, NATO and Western governments nonetheless kept mum as this was happening.

Three reasons

It seems the European Union and Western countries deliberately did not say anything about the massacre in Donbass because they knew it would provoke a Russian response, the ex-NATO analyst said.

He also pointed out that in January saboteurs with Western equipment were caught in Donbass who spoke Polish. They had wanted to cause incidents with chemical substances in Gorlovka. Baud said Joe Biden knew the mass bombing and acts of sabotage would lead to a Russian invasion.

Western weapons for Ukraine find their way back to the EU

On Tuesday morning, a man of Iraqi origin stabbed a passenger at Berlin Ostkreuz train station in the back, seriously injuring him.

The perpetrator initially bumped into the 46-year-old man and then suddenly stabbed him in the back with a knife, reports the federal police.

The seriously injured victim saved his life when he reached a patrol by the Deutsche Bahn railway company security service.

“Rescue workers treated the injured traveler right away and then took him to a hospital for medical care,” the federal police stated.

Once police checked his background, they discovered he also had four arrests for property crime and violations of narcotics laws.

Migrant crime being hidden?

A number of top German publications made no mention of the perpetrator being an Iraqi migrant, including the taxpayer-funded RBB, the taxpayer-funded dpa wire service, the Berliner Zeitung, the Berliner Abendblatt, T-Online, and Der Taggespiegel. The Bild is the only large paper that reported that the suspect was Iraqi and that he was already wanted by police for previous incidents. Stabbing attacks involving migrants are not uncommon in Germany. In fact, here are a list of just a few of the stabbings from only 2021 involving migrants: an Afghan stabbed three people at a Dresden train while screaming “Allahu Akbar;” a Somali man stabbed and killed three women in the German city of Würzburg; a Somali man stabbed his victim 111 times and beheaded him in Bavaria; a Syrian migrant stabbed four people on a high-speed ICE train between Regensburg and Nuremberg; and an Afghan refugee stabbed a woman who was working in a park because “she was working,” which made him angry.

That is by no means an exhaustive list of stabbing attacks involving migrants in Germany for 2021, but it highlights the real but often underreported societal challenge of migrants and high crime rates. Data shows that migrants and foreigners in Germany are disproportionately involved in crime, especially violent crimes such as stabbings and murder. Despite making up about 12 percent of the population, foreign national account for 37.7 percent of all violent crime.

Did the bomb threat at Offenburg railway station have a politically and religiously motivated background or was it simply an adolescent acting out? On the second day after the large-scale police operation in the tranquil town of Offenburg, the main suspect is now in custody.

On Wednesday, a few hours after the large-scale police operation, the 18-year-old was brought before the magistrate at the Karlsruhe district court. According to Manuel Graulich, press spokesman of the responsible law enforcement agency, he then issued the arrest warrant.

The 18-year-old is not unknown to the police. In a joint press release, the public prosecutor’s office in Karlsruhe and the Offenburg police headquarters refer to an incident at the beginning of the year. And with that, one speculation seems to be off the table: Does he perhaps belong to the spectrum of right-wing radicals, Corona deniers or to the circle of the extremist group that – as reported – planned the kidnapping of Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) as well as a coup? As Manuel Graulich explained to the editorial staff, there is “no connection whatsoever” to these groups.

Whether the 18-year-old was in a state of mental emergency is also the subject of the investigation. It is the normal questionnaire that the investigating authorities are trying to clarify. As reported in detail, the alleged bomb threat later in the evening of April 19 called for a huge contingent of state and federal police, especially at Offenburg railway station.

Ansgar Gernsbeck, press officer of the Offenburg police headquarters, told the editorial team that police forces from the Freiburg and Constance police stations were called in to assist. Specially trained dogs helped in the search for explosives. However, no such substances were found.

An eyewitness wrote on Facebook that the train and the station had been evacuated. The railway station in Lahr was also closed for two hours.

As a result, train traffic did not start moving for a long time. It was not until around 0.30 a.m. that regular services were possible again.
