Not a single day goes by without new revelations in the case of the murdered 13-year-old schoolgirl: Most recently, the police were able to arrest a third Afghan suspect. He was already serving a prison sentence for a sexual offence and should have been deported last year.

The fact that the 23-year-old was still in Austria, however, is due to the fact that he had gone into hiding after his release from prison and therefore the authorities could not find him. His file is also well filled: He had been charged with drug trafficking, assault, aggravated coercion and illegal possession of weapons. In May 2020, as reported by the newspaper Kurier, he was sentenced to two years in prison, among other things for sexual assault and battery. Of this, he had to serve six months without parole. Afterwards, the man went into hiding so that he could not be deported.

According to a witness, he was present during the violence in the social flat of an 18-year-old Afghan in the Donaustadt district of Vienna – whether he was also involved is still being clarified by the investigators.

An expert panel in Norway had recommended that the country drop vaccines made by Johnson & Johnson as well as AstraZeneca from its anti-Covid-19 campaign due to the risk of blood clots. Despite the risk, the Janssen product will be made available in South Africa, according to Camilla Stoltenberg, the director of Norway’s National Institute of Public Health.

Norway will finance the local production of 400 million Johnson & Johnson vaccine doses in South Africa, with Norfund, the Norwegian state’s investment fund for developing countries, investing a total of $7,5 million in the project.

And Norway is not doing it for any health benefits either: “We are an investor, not an aid organisation. This is a loan, not a gift. But here we expect a relatively low return,” Norfund director Tellef Thorleifsson told national broadcaster NRK. He cannot promise that all the vaccines will be free for African consumers, but says that “that is what is being planned”.

Africa’s current vaccination rate is less than 2 percent of the total population. He hopes to increase the vaccination rate in the next year.

The South African holding company Aspen Pharmacare will produce the vaccine under license from Johnson & Johnson. The Aspen Pharmacaremanufacturing plant is in the eastern city of Gqeberha, which until March this year was known as Port Elizabeth.

“Production started already in April, and in the course of 12 months, 300 million doses will be made, and over a year and a half fully 400 million,” Thorleifsson explained. Of these, South Africa has pre-ordered 60 million doses while the African Union ordered 220 million to cover some 30 percent of Africa’s population.

The risky single-dose Janssen vaccine has the advantage of being easier to store, enabling better distribution, since it does not need to be ultra-cooled, which is difficult in African climatic conditions, according to Stoltenberg. Several African countries have received vaccines that they did not manage to distribute before they expired. South Sudan, for example, received 132 000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine under the international Covax program for poor countries in March. Some 72 000 of these were returned because the authorities did not have the capacity to use the vaccines in time.

South Africa offered its stock of AstraZeneca to the African Union in February this year after it paused its rollout because trial data showed it offered minimal protection against the “variant of the virus that emerged in the country last year”.

At the time, South African Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told parliament in Cape Town that rumours that the doses, which were purchased from the Serum Institute of India (SII), had expired and were being returned to India were “simply not true”. At the same time, the health minister announced that the country had instead secured 9 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

In June, however, South Africa had to discard at least 2 million Johnson & Johnson shots produced in the country after they were found by the US Food and Drug Administration to be “contaminated at a Baltimore plant”.

South Africa has also purchased and is expecting delivery of 30 million doses of the Pfizer product. Mostly whites have paid for and received the jab so far due to targeted propaganda telling them that it is the only way to “halt” the pandemic.

In Norway, the panel of health experts, commissioned by the Norwegian government, stopped the Johnson & Johnson roll-out after the use of the AstraZeneca jab was first declared risky. The recommendations of the panel were adopted alongside advice from the Institute of Public Health, which also called for both injections to be dropped from the programme.

Explaining its recommendations, the panel said eight Norwegian cases of severe clotting had been linked to AstraZeneca and four of those recipients had died. They cited the same adverse reactions for advising against the use of the J&J shot. “Great emphasis must be placed on maintaining confidence in the national vaccination scheme so that immunity can be established in the population in multiple potential rounds of vaccination in the coming years,” the panel declared.

Norway was not the only country which stopped the use of both AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson. France, Germany, the UK and Canada have also restricted use of the shots. Denmark has stopped using both products completely despite rising Covid-19 infections.

In the US, several states stopped the use of these two vector products too: New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Maryland, Virginia, Missouri, Georgia, Michigan and Ohio said they would follow a recommendation by the Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration to pause Johnson & Johnson’s distribution after reports of blood clotting.

The Afghan (then 12 years old), who came to Austria in 2015, lived in a large communal building in the street Erzherzog-Karl-Straße in Vienna-Donaustadt until recently. Many neighbours now hope that calm will finally return to and around the 3-storey community building. The neighbours of the 18-year-old, Gökhan C. (38) and Seyed M, say: “There were often three or four colleagues in the flat. It was untidy, a lot of bulky waste, there was even a carpet lying around in the yard. The tenant was dealing quite openly. Many young girls went in and out of there. And it was often noisy, once a window pane broke.”

A resident of the community building adds: “Many drug customers even rang my doorbell and wanted to buy drugs. Of course, that is annoying in the long run.” The 38-year-old had even called the police on Monday evening, eventually took the officers to the suspect’s flat. “After all, I have a nine-year-old daughter myself,” says the tenant from the building.

Seyed M. does not have much positive to say either: “I only saw a girl sitting at the window on Friday.” The neighbours spoke Persian with the Afghans. By the way, both neighbours are convinced: “He was never 18 years old! One estimates the suspect to be 28 years old, the other neighbour even 36. It is possible that the authorities will have the age of the suspects checked in the event of an indictment.

The government factions of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Green Party (Grüne) have made a motion in Hamburg’s state parliament demanding that the “NDR Broadcasting Council should be even more strongly oriented towards the diversity of society”.

The motion states that the city of Hamburg has already committed itself in contracts with the regional DITIB association of Hamburg and the Shura to “advocate in negotiations on the media state treaties that these religious communities are appropriately represented in the supervisory bodies such as the NDR Broadcasting Council”.

The Broadcasting Council is the highest supervisory body of the North German Broadcasting Corporation. Islamists are now supposed to gain a foothold here, of all places?

Ditib, the Turkish-Islamic Union of the Institute for Religion, is subordinate to the Turkish religious authority Diyanet. Its representatives repeatedly attract attention with anti-Semitic outbursts: for example, the Diyanet recently tweeted, while Hamas was terrorising Israeli civilians with rockets: “The baby-killer Israel must be stopped as soon as possible.”

The “Islamic Centre Hamburg” (IZH) is also represented in the Shura, the “Council of Islamic Communities in Hamburg”. According to the Hamburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the IZH is an important institution of the Iranian mullah regime. “The position of the IZH director is traditionally filled by a follower of the Iranian state doctrine and the Islamic revolutionary goals who is loyal to the line. He is considered the representative of the revolutionary leader Khamenei in Europe.”

Mohammad Hadi Mofateh (55), the current leader, is a “savvy trained representative of the current regime in Tehran” who served in the terrorist Revolutionary Guards, according to the investigators.

While IZH officials used to support the anti-Semitic Quds March calling for the destruction of Israel, it was cancelled last year because of the Corona situation. Instead, according to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, a “Shiite extremist with close ties to the IZH” held an online event for Quds Day. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (LfV) in Hamburg has now been reporting on the IZH for three decades because of “findings about efforts against the basic order”.

And such Islamists are now supposed to control the NDR channel via the Broadcasting Council?

“We are very irritated by these efforts of the state government in Hamburg,” says Remko Leemhuis, head of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) Berlin. “Of course it is welcome if the Broadcasting Council wants to reflect social diversity. However, this must not mean that organisations such as the IZH or DITIB are involved,” Leemhuis told the newspaper BILD.

“After all, the institutions and organisations do not represent the interests of Hamburg’s Muslims, but those of the anti-Semitic regime in Tehran and Erdoğan’s dictatorship. It is simply scandalous that regimes that imprison or even execute journalists, of all people, should be granted influence over the shaping of public broadcasting in this country via their representatives. We strongly warn against involving these extremists.”

Christoph de Vries (46), a Christian Democratic Union (CDU) member of parliament in Hamburg, also sharply criticises the decision. “With this demand, the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens are taking their cuddling of Islamists and representatives of political Islam in Hamburg to the extreme,” the interior expert told BILD. “It is madness to want to fill the broadcasting council with a representative of the Shura, whose member IZH has been observed by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution for decades and is directly controlled by the Iranian Mullah regime. The same applies to the mosque association Ditib, which is subordinate to the Turkish President Erdogan.” He added that it was also inappropriate that Islamic religious communities should be more strongly represented on the Broadcasting Council than the churches, with three representatives from the associations.

“If the SPD and the Greens are even remotely serious about fighting for our liberal democracy and against anti-Semitism, then they must reverse this parliamentary decision immediately.”

The United Kingdom is also considering setting up offshore processing centers for migrants and asylum seekers, possibly in Africa. According to several British media outlets, British Home Secretary Priti Patel is expected to present a bill to this effect next week.
