A 48-year-old Syrian citizen has caused a stir outside the Federal Ministry of the Interior in Berlin (photo). The migrant demanded admission at 9.30 pm on Friday evening to complain personally to Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) about a court decision on the subject of ‘genocide in Gaza’. But his request was rejected at the gate. Then the whole thing escalated.
The Syrian grabbed a large cobblestone and smashed the armoured pane of the gatekeeper’s lodge. Despite its robustness, the pane suffered considerable damage. Federal police officers intervened and arrested the furious attacker.
When the Berlin police checked his personal details, they discovered that the man was already known to the police for several offences. The public prosecutor’s offices in both Cologne and Osnabrück were looking for him, as was the district court in Mannheim, which had issued an alert for his whereabouts. The charges against him: evasion of benefits and resisting police officers. In addition, the man has apparently been in Germany without authorisation since February 2023, after being recognised as a refugee in 2015.
However, after a brief detention, the Berlin police released the migrant. This decision caused astonishment and incomprehension – even among ministry officials. In view of the previous convictions and the aggressive offence, many people are asking why the Syrian was not at least taken into custody. An employee of the ministry is quoted in Bild: ‘Do you wait until he’s at the door with a bazooka?’ Meanwhile, the Berlin State Security has started an investigation.
