Paris: Fanatical Islamist who planned an attack on a church is charged and imprisoned

On March 5, the man was arrested by DGSI police officers near Paris and charged with “criminal terrorist activity” and imprisoned. The investigation revealed that he had scouted out several Christian buildings.

In the run-up to the Olympic Games, this highly sensitive case illustrates how high the threat of terrorism is in France. On March 5, a 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly planning a terrorist attack against Christian buildings, in particular a church, as a supporter of the Islamic State (IS) organisation. Investigators had uncovered various spying operations in the vicinity of sites belonging to the Catholic community.

After being remanded in custody, the suspect was charged with “criminal terrorist organisation” on March 8 and remanded in custody. This was the second planned act of violence foiled by the French secret service DGSI in 2024. Le Parisien
