AUR leader George Simion George Simion on Facebook, 14 March 2025
Romania’s Constitutional Court has approved George Simion, leader of the nationalist opposition AUR party, as a candidate for May’s repeated presidential elections. The court dismissed all three appeals against his candidature on the evening of Sunday, March 16th, although the final confirmation is not expected to be published until Tuesday.
Simion submitted his candidacy last week, just days before the final deadline, after the Court banned the party’s original candidate and the winner of the annulled December election, Călin Georgescu, from participating in the race.
In addition, the leader of a smaller nationalist party (POT), Anamaria Gavrilă, also submitted her file to maximize the chance that the nationalist opposition will have a candidate on the ballots. While her approval is still pending, an agreement between AUR and POT stipulates that if both candidates qualify, then Gavrilă will stand down to unite the nationalist vote under one name.
Underlining the momentum behind the banned frontrunner, Simion and Gavrilă collectively gathered over one million signatures in just a matter of days last week. Accompanied by former Polish PM and ECR president Mateusz Morawicki in Romania’s Central Electoral Bureau, Simion submitted over 600,000 signatures—three times as many as the required amount for a candidacy—while Gavrilă put down another 400,000 a day later.
Thank you to my good friend, @MorawieckiM, President of @ECRparty, for his strong support and for being today in #Bucharest.

On Sunday, the Court also cleared the candidacy of former socialist PM Victor Ponta, who will run as an independent, while at the same time reaffirming the earlier ban on the SOS Romania leader Diana Șoșoacă, who is considered too “extreme” even by the other nationalist parties.
According to the latest poll, published on Monday, March 17th, Simion will likely win the first round on May 4th but would lose the runoff two weeks later.
The AUR leader (and ECR Vice President) is favored by 30.4%, followed by Nicușor Dan, the independent liberal mayor of Bucharest running on an anti-corruption platform, with 26%. Crin Antonescu, the joint candidate of the ruling establishment parties, PSD (S&D) and PNL (EPP), is in third place with less than 18%.
In turn, the ex-socialist PM Victor Ponta, who has tried to copy Trump by launching a “Romania First” campaign, complete with red baseball caps, is in fourth place with 9%, while the liberal USR (Renew) leader Elena Lasconi—who advanced into the second round with Georgescu back in December with a good chance of winning the presidency—now stands at only 4%.
Therefore, unless there’s a significant shake-up in the coming weeks, the May 18th runoff will be between the two main anti-establishment candidates, Simion and Dan, with no government candidate in the final round—an identical situation to that which may have prompted the annulment of the December election in the first place.
The polls also show that Simion will have a tough time beating Dan for the presidency if it comes down to a two-way race between the two, as all ‘pro-European’ parties would unite behind the mayor against the nationalists. Dan is favored by 54% over Simion’s 46%, which is still possible to flip but will not be easy.
An Afghan asylum seeker has been jailed for two years and ten months for forcing a six-year-old boy to perform oral sex on him at a refugee reception center in Germany.
The crime, which occurred in May 2024, came to light when the child’s father noticed an unusual jingling of euro coins in his son’s pocket. Upon questioning, the boy revealed that “something bad” had happened that Sunday afternoon in Schönwald. His account led to an investigation and subsequent arrest of the suspect, who had fled Afghanistan in 2022 and entered Germany illegally.
The Villingen District Court heard how the defendant lured the child into his room with chocolate and then locked the door.
“After that, I had to do something… By force,” the victim said.
In a video-recorded interview conducted by a child psychologist and Judge Bernhard Lipp, the boy recounted how the man forced him to first touch his genitals before coercing him into performing oral sex.
The assailant then gave the boy €5 in coins and warned him not to tell anyone about the assault.
As reported by Schwarzwälder Bote, the courtroom watched the interrogation footage, in which the boy, despite his young age, provided a clear and consistent account of the crime. The court-appointed expert confirmed the child’s reliability as a witness, stating that his testimony showed “good consistency and no logical breaks.”
Initially, the accused denied the allegations, but as the trial progressed, he admitted through his lawyer that oral sex had taken place, confirming his guilt. However, a dispute arose over his age. The defendant had initially claimed he was born on Jan. 1, 2004, which, if true, would have placed him under juvenile criminal law.
However, forensic examinations, including X-ray procedures, indicated that he was likely born between April and July 2000, making him at least 21 at the time of the crime and thus subject to adult criminal law.
The prosecution sought a three-year prison sentence, arguing that while violence was used, the assault was “a rather short process” and the act had not had “too serious consequences for the child.” The defense, citing the defendant’s partial confession and remorse, requested a two-year suspended sentence.
However, the court, presided over by Judge Lipp, insisted an immediate custodial sentence was necessary and handed down a jail term of two years and ten months for the serious sexual abuse of a child combined with rape.
The court maintained the arrest warrant, and the defendant was immediately returned to custody.
The mastermind of the group: Abdur Rahman Shadid.NIUS/NIUS
The channel info on YouTube reads more innocuously than the self-description of a scout group: hate and violence against individuals or groups are not advocated or supported. ‘We want to promote dialogue, contribute to education and better coexistence in society,’ it says. But if you take a closer look, you quickly realise that the content of the channel is by no means harmless and peaceful. In fact, the group ‘Nūr al “Ilm | Light of Knowledge” is a particularly radical Islamist group that has remained invisible up to now – and is courting young people.
With more than 100 videos, the channel gives an impression of what they are taught in the youth camps, Quran reading sessions or Islamic lessons. The clip ‘Lessons from the Battle of Uhud’, for example, states that the Prophet was of the opinion ‘that we, the believers, should wait for the kuffar in Medina, that the kuffar will come in and that the kuffar will then be slaughtered in Medina – from the sides and from the houses’. ‘Streetfight in Medina.’ The kuffar stands for unbelievers, an expression that Islamists repeatedly use to devalue non-Muslims. In the video about the Prophet Lut, on the other hand, the following relationship to homosexuality is conveyed: ‘Homosexuality, of course, is not a minor sin, but a major sin. […] And you know it is killed in Islam. If you see someone doing the deed, then you should kill both: the one who does it and the one with whom it is done. Both must be killed.’ Some scholars would have deduced that the sinner should be thrown from a high building or burned to death. ‘Sin is very bad in Islam.’
And: The chastisement of women is also described as a permissible act of violence. ‘If she still persists in [wrong behaviour], he hits her – but not hard, not in the face and without leaving any marks. He may also beat her if she neglects the duties of Allah,’ says another video.
The same video also indirectly legitimises the murder of critics of Islam. It is about the Dutchman Theo van Gogh, who was killed by the radical Islamist Mohammed Bouyeri in 2004. Van Gogh had previously repeatedly mocked Allah and the prophet Mohammed. ‘He insulted the prophet – and then he was stabbed to death in the street. Was the murder a good thing? It brings greater harm, to be honest. You weigh up the harm against the benefit.’ From an Islamic point of view, however, ‘it wouldn’t be wrong to kill someone like that’.
Dozens of such videos have been uploaded to Nūr al ‘Ilm’s YouTube channel, which is adorned with an open Koran from which rays of light are streaming and has just around 500 followers. They oscillate between question time and life advice, in which young people are told how to lead a life in accordance with the religion, and Quran recitations, in which the contents of the holy Islamic scripture are interpreted in an almost orthodox, literal manner – in the sense of the Sahaba and Salafiya, i.e. the ‘companions’ and ‘ancestors’. Salafists, including Nūr al ‘Ilm, refer to these scholars, who lived in the first generations of Muhammad, when they promote an Islamist lifestyle in the modern age. Here, too, reference is made to Islamic historical events such as battles and Qur’anic surahs.
Youth camps, so-called brotherhood meetings, are held in numerous videos. At the centre of the group is a stocky man with a shaved short haircut and a full beard who calls himself Abdur Rahman Shadid. He and his group are mainly active in northern Germany: events organised by Nūr al ‘Ilm take place in Bremen, Lübeck and the Assalam Mosque there, Delmenhorst, but also in North Rhine-Westphalia and Mannheim. Last year, a short pilgrimage with Shadid was available from the provider ‘Taibah Tours’ for the bargain price of 1400 euros.
The low-cost pilgrimage to Mecca – with the mastermind of the group, Abdur Rahman Shadid NIUS/NIUS
NIUS wanted to know how the statements in the videos are to be interpreted and whether they are in line with the free and democratic basic order. The group left one enquiry unanswered until Sunday evening. It is unclear whether the catalogue of questions sent by NIUS was read at all.
This in turn is due to the conspiratorial nature of the group. Nūr al ‘Ilm resembles a black box, operating without an imprint and without a loadable address for justiciable content. Apart from the YouTube channel, there is no website, no email address and no telephone number that would allow contact to be made with the Islamists. Sermon content and share tiles are uploaded to Instagram. There is also an internal WhatsApp group to which hand-picked believers can be added. The conspiracy of the creators is also evident from the fact that a whole catalogue of questions must be answered – in addition to personal details, Arabic level and knowledge of the Koran are also requested – in order to be included in the select WhatsApp chat.
Virtually nothing can be found on the internet about the man at the centre of the group, Abdur Rahman Shadid. Information on Nūr al ‘Ilm is also scarce. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has just as little knowledge of the group’s structures as the state offices in Bremen and Schleswig-Holstein, according to an enquiry from NIUS. The latter point out that they only take action if they have ‘factual indications’ that suggest an anti-constitutional mindset – although Nūr al ‘Ilm was demonstrably active in both states.
Islamism expert Sigrid Herrmann warns against the structures of Nūr al ‘Ilm vis-à-vis NIUS: “The group is remarkable in its radicalism and its self-image,” says the 61-year-old. It is based on an ‘elite concept’ that only allows a small circle of young men to become part of a community. Herrmann sees the lack of information and the lack of transparency as a danger. ‘In the past, the danger of Islamist groups was measured by their size and prominence, but such closed systems are sometimes more dangerous for the radicalisation of individuals – and often go unnoticed because they operate decentrally and digitally.
There is one indication of the networking of Shadid’s group: in the Telegram group, one of the three administrators is identified with the username @ikzbremen. The abbreviation IKZ stands for the Islamic Cultural Centre. The religious centre in the centre of Bremen is considered a meeting place for radical Salafists by constitutional watchdogs. The sermons held at the IKZ are often ‘directed against central constitutional principles and call for the deliberate exclusion and marginalisation of non-Muslims or supposed non-believers’, according to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution in response to an enquiry from NIUS. ‘In addition to a rejection of the Western legal system and values, the spread of anti-Semitic content and the propagation of the inequality of religions are evidence of the Islamist orientation of the IKZ.’ The sermons reveal ‘typical values and enemy images of Salafist ideology’ and aim to evoke a ‘feeling of superiority’ among listeners.
It is precisely these ideological components that can also be found in Nūr al ‘Ilm. For example, one video invokes the omnipotence of Allah in the fight against major powers such as the USA, Israel or Russia. ‘Allah is the King and Allah has power over everything. And Allah can destroy all these powerful countries in a second: Israel, the USA, the Soviet Union, Russia: all these big countries that you think: okay, they’re badass countries and they have big, badass weapons. It’s very easy [for Allah] to destroy them.’ In the manner of the TikTok preacher Abul Baraa, Abdur Rahman Shadid praised the question of how the fight against kuffar, i.e. unbelievers, could be waged in this day and age if one did not know whether women and children could be hit by bombs as a ‘very good question’. There is a general judgement in Islam ‘that we do not kill women and children and people who do not fight and people who are poor.’ But it goes on to say: ‘But what if we want to fight the kuffar, for example’ – and it is not possible to distinguish them from women, children and the poor? ‘Then it is possible’, the speaker concludes.
In the video ‘Al Jihad. Hanbali Fiqh’ not only advertises jihad as a duty of Muslims, but also makes it clear: ’Allah has commanded that his religion prevail over all religions and that his religion be practised everywhere and that he be called to everywhere, to his religion. And that the rules of his religion prevail everywhere.’
The group has made this a priority. In addition to the production of daily online content, dawah is also on the agenda. The term stands for Islamic proselytising in public spaces. Here, too, there are videos in which young people in caftans and with trimmed moustaches try to convert passers-by to Islam in pedestrian zones, for example in Bremen. The campaign is accompanied by religious music in Arabic and some of the young people hold Qurans up to the camera.
The campaign is inevitably reminiscent of the Koran distribution campaign ‘Lies’, in which Salafists campaigned for converts to Islam in numerous German cities from 2010 onwards. Well-known Islamists such as Ibrahim Abou-Nagie and his group ‘The True Religion’, which was later banned, were involved in the campaign. Attackers such as the Essen Sikh temple bomber had previously travelled through city centres distributing Korans. For Islamism expert Sigrid Herrmann, this is a cause for concern: ‘Especially when Koran reading circles also carry out proselytising campaigns, security authorities should take notice.’ The connection to the IKZ Bremen, which is considered one of the centres for Salafist structures in northern Germany, is also a ‘red flag’ for her. ‘Dozens of Muslims from the ‘Lies’ environment had travelled to Syria and Iraq as fighters for the ‘Islamic State’.’
Meanwhile, Nūr al ‘Ilm continues to meet. Last weekend, the ‘third meeting of the Brothers’ took place in Gütersloh. In the centre of the flyer advertising the event is a sign that is very reminiscent of the ‘Seal of the Prophet’ – the symbol that the ‘Islamic State’ also prints on its flag. ‘Seal of the Prophets’ was also a spin-off of the Koran distribution campaign “Read” – and was listed in several constitutional protection reports.
For some, this may initially be pure Islamic trivia and pure coincidence. For others, it is evidence of Islamist continuities that will persist in 2025.
A middle school in Illinois reportedly forced a class of 13-year-old girls to change in front of a trans-identified male student in the school locker rooms after a Physical Education class, according to the mother of one of the girls involved.
Speaking during a meeting of the Deerfield School District 109 School Board on Thursday, Nicole Georgas revealed that on February 5, her daughter came home “frightened” and “upset” after finding a male student in the girls’ bathroom at school. Concerned, Georgas contacted the administration, and was told that under direction from their legal counsel, that if the student identifies as female, they are free to use any of the sex-segregated facilities as they so choose.
Only a few days later, “the situation went from bad to worse,” as according to Georgas, the male student was then present in the girls’ locker rooms for their Physical Education (PE) class. The girls, unwilling to have their privacy violated even further, collectively refused to undress in front of him. The following day, Assistant Principal Cathy Van Treese hauled the girls into her office and questioned them, before escorting them to their locker room and forcing them to change into their uniforms with the boy present. Van Treese was accompanied by Assistant Superintendent Joanna Ford and Director for Student Services Ginger Logemann. The monitoring to ensure compliance allegedly happened “all week,” Georgas explained to the district.
“My daughter refused to take part in having her privacy violated. How dare they. She ran out and called me for help,” she added. The solution presented by the school was for Georgas’s daughter to simply swap into a new PE class, which was flatly refused.
Under Illinois state law, the “rights” of trans-identified individuals, especially students, to go into whatever facilities they please, are firmly protected. According to the state’s Department of Human Rights, “the discomfort or privacy concerns of other students, teachers, or parents are not valid reasons to deny or limit the full and equal use of facilities based on a student’s gender-related identity. Instead, any student, teacher or other individual seeking more privacy should be accommodated by providing that individual a more private option upon their request, if possible.”
However, since President Trump’s return to office, the federal government has been empowered to “take all appropriate action to affirmatively protect all-female athletic opportunities and all-female locker rooms and thereby provide the equal opportunity guaranteed by Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972,” with the President declaring as he signed the executive order coincidentally also on February 5t, that “if you let men… invade your locker rooms, you will be investigated for violations of Title IX and risk your federal funding.”
As such, Georgas revealed that she had filed a civil rights complaint with the Department of Justice that has now been referred to the Department of Education, along with a federal complaint directly to the district in order to protect her daughter and other students. At the time of the executive order, the school district declared that they were “committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and high-quality education for all students.”
“The girls just want their privacy and they want their locker room back. There are gender neutral options,” Georgas continued. “This is my daughter’s story and the story of many other young girls who have been forced at a difficult age to do something they know and most adults know is wrong… Allowing biological males to access girl’s locker rooms sets a dangerous precedent that erodes the very foundation of female privacy and safety. By making this decision, the school board is not only disregarding the concerns of young female students, but also establishing a legal and policy framework that will make it increasingly difficult to protect the integrity of female-only spaces in the future.”
Following her speech, Georgas was booed by a number of trans activists, who accused her of being “obsessed with children’s genitals.” No other speaker at the meeting was in support of Georgas, and instead was filled with various loud accusations of bigotry, in some cases directly pointed at her.
One speaker Charlie Friedman, who serves as a director for the Trans Upfront organization, accused Georgas of “bullying” trans-identified children just for being concerned about her daughter. Another argued it was a “deliberate misrepresentation” to claim that girls were forced to change in front of a boy, because “who they’re talking about is a girl, a transgender girl,” comparing their concerns to racism, while a third suggested the school would have to perform “genital checks” on students, because “a lot of transgender people pass.”
The final speaker, Tina Nelson, who wore a shirt reading “Protect Trans Kids” alongside a knife, directly confronted Georgas, staring her down and accusing her of using a “white supremacist religion to push the agenda of their cis white husbands… targeting a middle school student because of your white God.”
William Shakespeare has long been considered one of England’s great men because of his extraordinary output of timeless plays and sonnets. They that shaped the English language as well as exporting ideas about British culture…not because the Brits foisted his works on others, but because others recognized their beauty and universality.
Now, though, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, as part of the nation’s push for national suicide, which is the premier Shakespeare organization in England, has decided that Shakespeare is just too…English, and that’s bad. In answer to Hamlet’s question (“to be or not to be”), the Trust has determined that Shakespeare is not to be.
Once, every educated person had seen or read at least some Shakespeare plays. His comedies made us laugh, his histories taught us about the nature of power and reminded us that those who are high can be brought low and vice versa, and his tragedies’ continued popularity revealed that the human condition is unchanging and that human folly brings disaster in its wake.
Yes, these plays were set in England (even the plays set in Italy or ancient Rome were still set in England), but they had a universality that saw them rise above time and place. Add in Shakespeare’s exquisite prose, which shaped the English language for centuries after he died, and you had something that made, and should still make, the British very proud.
However, as Shakespeare himself knew, human folly remains constant, and nothing reveals greater folly than the left’s march on Western culture.
Britain definitely did bad things over the centuries. After all, it kicked every Jew out of England for hundreds of years (so Shakespeare had never seen a Jew when he created Shylock) it was one of the major participants in the African slave trade, it was one of the world’s major colonizers, and it treated factory workers badly during the beginning of the industrial revolution. Bad Britain!
But, because events must be understood within the times in which they occur, the entire medieval world was antisemitic, every nation in the history of humankind relied on slavery, every powerful nation in the history of world practiced colonialism, and all Western nations allowed workers to be abused in the early days of industrialism. In other words, Britain was no worse than the nations around her.
When Britain was good, though, she was very, very good. It was Britain’s Great Awakening, a religious crisis of conscience, that led to the abolition of slavery, the end of child labor, and the general improvement of working conditions.
And while Britain was a colonialist, Niall Ferguson has pointed out something fascinating: Former British colonies, wherever they are in the world, have thrived, exceeding nations in their regions that others had colonized (and everyone was colonizing everyone, whether Western, Asian, or Muslim). In other words, while we moderns can rant against the evils of colonization, everyone was doing it, and the lucky nations got England as their rulers.
Here in America, a former British colony that rose to be the most successful nation in the world, we thrived because the British gave us their ideas about individual liberty. Thank you, Britain! We parted ways with you when you abandoned your own principles, but we kept the principles.
In other words, England’s history is a mixed bag but it was better than most—and the British, while they shouldn’t deny the bad, should mostly be proud of the good.
But now, having drowned itself in a sea of leftism, and imported millions of people who believe that their culture (Islam) is infinitely superior to that of their new home, Britain has determined that Shakespeare, who was practically the avatar of the best of Britain, must be jettisoned. To that end, his birthplace will be cleansed of Britain’s “colonialist” stain:
This process includes exploring “the continued impact of Empire” on the collection, the “impact of colonialism” on world history, and how “Shakespeare’s work has played a part in this”.
[snip]
The process of “decolonising”, which typically means moving away from Western perspectives, comes after concerns were raised that Shakespeare’s genius was used to advance ideas about “white supremacy”.
The claims were made in a 2022 collaborative research project between the trust and Dr Helen Hopkins, an academic at the University of Birmingham.
The problem was that the Trust dared present Shakespeare’s ideas as genius universal ruminations about power, folly, love, and tragedy. Nothing, it seems, could be more evil:
“This idea of Shakespeare’s universal genius ‘benefits the ideology of white European supremacy’, it was claimed.”
The audacity! What this means is that those who dare admire Shakespeare are guilty of “white Anglo-centric, Eurocentric, and increasingly ‘West-centric’ worldviews that continue to do harm in the world today.” This admiration causes “epistemic violence” (a nonsense phrase meaning it makes leftists sad).
In an interview with Laura Ingraham, JD Vance warned that “Europe is at risk of engaging in civilizational suicide.” He spoke in terms of open borders and totalitarian speech control. He’s right, of course. But those are the manifestations of something deeper: For over 100 years, leftists have brainwashed Europeans into believing that the civilization they built is so flawed that their very existence is evil. Marinated in those beliefs, civilizational suicide is the only reasonable option.
And so, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, which once existed to celebrate Britain’s greatest man of letters, must now go out of its way to expose the evil inherent in his work.
What’s happening at Shakespeare’s birthplace is another reason America really needs to pull out of NATO, because there’s nothing left in Europe to defend. We are simply giving money to people who hate the West and America, and who are dedicating themselves to the downfall of both.
A woman on a tram in Germany suffered life-threatening injuries after she was covered with gasoline and set on fire by an unknown attacker in the small city of Gera.
At around 10 am local time, a 46-year-old woman was approached by an unknown assailant, who poured gasoline over her and set her on fire while on the Gera tram in eastern Thuringia.
Immediately after the woman was set ablaze, fellow passengers pressed the emergency stop button on the tram, police spokeswoman Katja Ridder said per Bild.
However, the attacker could flee the scene because the tram’s emergency stop function also opened all of the train doors.
The tram driver quickly grabbed a fire extinguisher and used it to put out the fire engulfing the woman. She received medical attention on the scene before being flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital. She remains in a life-threatening condition.
Thuringian police have launched a major search operation for the suspect in the city of Gera and the surrounding area.
Police are looking for 46-year-old Tengizi Kakiashvili (see photo).
Mr. Kakiashvili is about 180 cm tall, of Georgian origin and dressed in a black work jacket with a blue address. He was also wearing a black cap at the time of the crime. Furthermore, Mr. Kakiashvili and the victim are related to each other. He is her husband.
At the present time, it cannot be ruled out that the wanted man poses a danger to the public. If you come across Mr. Kakiashvili or can provide information about his current whereabouts, please inform the criminal investigation department in Gera (Tel. 0365 / 8234 – 1465) or any other police station immediately. Please do not put yourself in danger!

The birthplace of William Shakespeare is undergoing “decolonisation” after concerns were raised after the bard was being deployed to promote “white supremacy”.
Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust owns a number of buildings across Stratford-upon-Avon, as well as a collection of personal documents of the famous playwright.
Now, the trust is now “decolonising” its collection of artefacts to “create a more inclusive museum experience”.
The museum curators will carry out further analysis on the “impact of colonialism” on world history and the ways in which “Shakespeare’s work has played a part in this”.
Certain items in its archives might include “language or depictions that are racist, sexist, homophobic, or otherwise harmful”, the trust said.
The change comes as the playwright receives significant posthumous backlash against his works – many of which have had trigger warnings for racism, sexism and violence.
Several years ago, findings of a research project between Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust and the University of Birmingham’s Dr Helen Hopkins indicated that the writer’s works “benefits the ideology of white European supremacy”, The Telegraph reports.
The research argues that European culture was forced to become the world standard for high art via “colonial inculcation” and that Shakespeare was deployed as a symbol of “British cultural superiority”.
The researchers declared that such a narrative was harmful and urged the trust to stop referring to the playwright as the “greatest” writer and encouraged them to say that he was part of a group of “equal and different” international authors.
The trust received funding from an organisation – named the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation – that works to encourage diversity and inclusion and provide a more international perspective in the museum’s curation.
The museum has attempted to incorporate more international events into its calendar by, for instance, adding in a Romeo and Juliet-themed dance class.
It is also working towards analysing how artefacts could be differently interpreted to tell more diverse and inclusive stories.
Offensive language will also be removed from its collections as they conduct a “long, thoughtful” process.
A statement from the trust said: “As part of our ongoing work, we’ve undertaken a project which explores our collections to ensure they are as accessible as possible.”
The trust’s process comes amid public indignation against “woke” trigger warnings on Shakespeare’s plays, as a university slaps over 200 warnings on his works for depictions of storms and the action of popping a balloon.
High-profile actors have condemned such actions, including Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen, arguing that it reduces the shocking impact of theatre.
Editorial note: Ordo Iuris and MCC’s use of the expression “The Great Reset” is both ironic and suggestive of their radical proposed changes to the current federalist European Union.
A wave of hysteria was unleashed this week following a presentation at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC, of a blueprint for sweeping reform of the European Union.
The formerly USAID-funded, left-wing Central European media outlet VSquare expressed dismay, writing:
The Trump administration’s most influential think tank, The Heritage Foundation, is receiving proposals from illiberal [sic] forces in Poland and Hungary on how to shape the future of the European Union. The proposals, obtained by VSquare, include dismantling key EU institutions and renaming the entire bloc.
The article, widely reproduced in European media, was entitled: “Renaming the EU, Dismantling the Commission: What Polish and Hungarian Illiberals Seek U.S. Backing For.”
Indeed, a presentation of the report “The Great Reset: Restoring Member State Sovereignty in the European Union” did take place on March 11 at an event organized in Washington by the influential Heritage Foundation. The report was prepared by Poland’s Ordo Iuris Institute and Hungary’s Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC) and presents two possible scenarios for reforming the European Union to restore democracy and the sovereignty of its member states.
This was one of several events in the United States attended by Ordo Iuris representatives. This first ‘live’ presentation of these preliminary reform proposals—charting a course different from that envisioned by Brussels elites—took place ahead of the scheduled March 18 presentation in Budapest and the March 26 presentation in Brussels.
There will undoubtedly be more such presentations (one is already planned for Warsaw, though the exact date remains unknown). This is especially relevant as the push for an alternative EU reform project extends beyond Poland’s Ordo Iuris and Hungary’s MCC, encompassing a broader coalition of right-wing, conservative circles across Europe.
Democracy at risk: Two competing visions for the European Union
In fact, the initiative to develop a counterproposal to the reform plan voted on by the European Parliament in November 2023—strongly backed by the French President and the German Chancellor—began at a conference jointly organized in September in Warsaw by Ordo Iuris and The Heritage Foundation. The conference, titled “On the Threshold of the State of Europe: Economy, Defense, Ideology, and the Protection of Sovereignty in a Transatlantic Perspective,” gathered representatives of think tanks, politicians, academics, social activists, and public intellectuals from Poland, Spain, France, the UK, Italy, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, Croatia, and the USA.
“The Heritage Foundation is now planning to destroy the EU—with the help of Polish and Hungarian partners,” wrote New York Times columnist Anne Applebaum in reaction to the VSquare article on social media.
Applebaum is the wife of Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radosław Sikorski (to whom Elon Musk recently referred as ‘a Soros puppet’ amid their high-profile feud on X). and a vocal Trump critic. During last year’s presidential campaign in the U.S., she went so far as to write, “Trump is speaking like Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini.”
However, it was not the Heritage Foundation that authored the report but rather two independent European think tanks. Moreover, Europe’s democracy- and freedom-oriented patriotic circles are invited to contribute to the ongoing work on this preliminary draft.
Elon Musk himself has drawn comparisons between the contemporary European Union and the former Soviet Union in his X posts, while U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance warned at the Munich Security Conference:
The threat that I worry the most about vis-à-vis Europe is not Russia, it’s not China, it’s not any other external actor. What I worry about is the threat from within—the retreat of Europe from some of its most fundamental values, values shared with the United States of America.
A reform plan rooted in the Communist Ventotene Manifesto, as championed by zealous Euro-federalists such as MEP Guy Verhofstadt, Emmanuel Macron, and former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, would spell the end of democracy on the continent—unless it brought the disintegration of the European Union. Their plan is not merely federalist but outright centralist.
The Ordo Iuris Institute detailed this in last year’s report, “Why Do We Need Sovereignty? Ten Areas of the Proposed Surrender of National Sovereignty in Light of the European Parliament’s Resolution on Proposals for the Amending of the Treaties.”
By contrast, the alternative vision proposed by European conservatives is outlined in the newly presented report: “The Great Reset: Restoring Member State Sovereignty in the European Union.”
In response to Anne Applebaum’s criticism, the president of Ordo Iuris took to X, stating:
The Great Reset provides for the restoration of true freedom and sovereign power to states. A common market free from overregulation. An end to bureaucratic rules. A flexible, multi-speed European Union ready for global challenges.
The need for such an alternative reform project is growing more urgent, with the goal of Making Europe Great Again. While U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized the EU as “nasty” in the context of trade policies, the bloc is becoming increasingly oppressive and indeed nasty in a political sense.
The liberal left in Europe now sees Ukraine’s war and America’s new approach to this war under Donald Trump as an opportunity to accelerate “European integration”—which, in reality, translates into further centralization of power in the hands of unelected Eurocrats who cannot be held accountable by voters.
Even without waiting for formal treaty reforms—currently being discreetly advanced by European elites with little media scrutiny—the European Commission and the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) are already asserting that EU law and its interpretation by the CJEU should take precedence over national constitutions. This would directly subordinate the judiciary and constitutional courts of EU member states to Luxembourg-based judges, effectively sidelining national democratic processes.
A judicial European superstate is being built in place of parliamentary democracies, bypassing the will of national electorates. This shift is underscored by recent developments, such as the cancellation of Romania’s presidential election, the EU-funded “militant democracy” in Poland (a pretext for liberal-left control), and EU Commissioner Thierry Breton’s chilling declaration that the EU could intervene in Germany if the AfD were to win, and also elsewhere, just as it did in Romania.
Why ‘The Great Reset’ of the European Union?
The Heritage Foundation’s interest in this project stems from the fact that Americans have a vested interest in the trajectory of their European allies. Western civilization requires both a strong American democracy and a vibrant, democratic Europe. Such a Europe cannot exist without strong, democratic, and sovereign nation-states.
The conversation should therefore shift away from the Brussels elite’s vision of reform and toward a grassroots-driven transformation of the European Union. This alternative path involves moving away from the communist-inspired superstate model, envisioned by the Ventotene Manifesto (explicitly referenced in the European Parliament’s 2023 reform proposal), and returning to the Christian democratic vision of Robert Schuman, one of the founding fathers of post-war European integration.
Schuman once wrote, “Democracy must be Christian, or there will be no democracy at all.”
Today, we see just how true those words are—on both sides of the Atlantic.
