Thursday morning in the French town of Annecy: In a playground, an asylum seeker from Syria stabbed several people with a knife. Six children aged about 3 years and one adult were injured.
According to the identity provided by the attacker, he was a Syrian national, born in 1991, an asylum seeker and not known to the police, a police source told AFP.
Numerous rescue workers, police officers and soldiers are on the scene to take care of the victims and secure the site. The prefect is also on the scene. “The person was arrested thanks to the very quick intervention of the police forces,” Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne will go to the spot, Matignon announced.
Eyewitnesses in French media: “We saw a person attacking children playing. Small children, obviously they were his target. After people tried to scare him, he left and the police intervened. At first we all thought it was staged, but because people were screaming so much, we realized it was real.”
The man reportedly walked around an adjacent lake for several days beforehand. Another eyewitness reported, “He had been there for about two months, from morning to night, always alone. We figured he was weird.”
