Iraqi asylum seeker stabs head of an asylum centre to death in Sarstedt, Germany

Following a fatal knife attack on a 61-year-old man in Sarstedt, Lower Saxony, investigators have provided initial details about the victim and the suspect. The man killed was the operator of a hotel used as asylum accommodation, the police and public prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday in Hildesheim. The alleged perpetrator was a 35-year-old resident of the accommodation from Iraq. The suspect fled after the offence on Monday. According to the investigators, special police forces arrested him on Monday evening after an hour-long manhunt on an extensive company site in Sarstedt. The man was to be brought before a magistrate on Tuesday. According to previous findings, the 35-year-old is said to have stabbed the hotel operator after an argument on a street and fatally injured him in the process. The motive for the offence is still unclear, the police and public prosecutor’s office explained. The investigation is still ongoing.

Among other things, witness statements and the analysis of images from a surveillance camera led them to the fugitive. A knife was found near the scene of the crime. It is being investigated whether it is the murder weapon.
