Translation: Enemies of our civilisation have sawed off the cross of Faubouloin in the Morvan.
Shame on them!

The place has Celtic roots: The name ‘Faubouloin’ could combine ‘fau’ (beech) and a reference to the god Belenos, who is associated with light and springs. Three sacred springs have been preserved nearby:
Fontaine du Frêne: was visited for illnesses and weddings.
Fontaine Sainte-Marie: consulted by mothers of sick children as an oracle.
Sainte-Marguerite fountain: to facilitate births.
These pagan practices were gradually Christianised.
