The pupils of the Lycée Sévigné in Tourcoing are still in shock. On Monday October 7, a violent confrontation broke out between a pupil and a teacher, according to information obtained by the newspaper JDD from police sources and reported by Europe 1.
According to our information, a teacher of technical and medico-social sciences had ‘asked a pupil to take off her headscarf’ when the latter, who was about to leave the school, put on her headscarf while she was still at the premises.
The student refused to take off her headscarf and began ‘slapping and pushing’ the teacher, a police officer told JDD. The teacher responded to this attack by slapping the pupil. The situation then escalated. In a fit of rage, the pupil decided to ‘beat up’ her teacher before fleeing. The teacher was temporarily excluded from the secondary school and a report was filed. The pupil was arrested yesterday at 6.40 pm. According to the information available, she is of legal age and unknown to the police.
In this tense situation, the teachers at the Lycée Sévigné exercised their right to cancel classes on Tuesday in response to the attack the day before. No lessons were held, leaving the pupils in shock at the event. The teachers’ gesture of solidarity emphasises the seriousness of the situation and the need to take measures to protect teachers who are confronted with such acts of violence.
Gérald Darmanin, MP for the Nord department, former Minister of the Interior and MP-elect for Tourcoing, responded to X: ‘I would like to give my full support to this teacher in Tourcoing who, while simply ensuring that secularism – our common good – was respected, was beaten by a pupil. Everyone must support our teachers and condemn this violence against the Republic itself. ‘Xavier Bertrand, President of the Hauts-de-France region, also reacted to the attack: ‘All my support goes to the teacher who was attacked at the Lycée Sévigné in Tourcoing. Secularism is one of the cornerstones of the School of the Republic, it is non-negotiable. Let’s not give in’. www.lejdd.fr
