“Please do not bother me with ‘happy year, new year’ etc “. Rapper Gims has made a statement that is likely to anger many people. The Congolese artist – who grew up and became known in France under the pseudonym Maître Gims – declared on Friday December the 31st that he no longer wanted his fans to congratulate him on the New Year or even on his birthday. The singer and composer announced this in videos he temporarily posted on his Instagram account. The recordings are no longer available, but the identitarian activist Damien Rieu has collected them and shared them on Twitter. In these videos, Gims addresses his followers, “I never replied to this, but you keep sending me them the whole of January and February. Muslims stop it.” He reminds in passing that it is Muslims who kindly congratulate him on the New Year and on his birthday. “Brothers, we don’t celebrate that (…) That is not part of our beliefs”.
The rapper, who lives in Morocco for most of the year, again stated that Muslims, of which he is one, do not celebrate New Year. “Did the Muslims celebrate New Year? No!” he said. The singer also claimed that he suffers when people wish him happy birthday: “It’s another step towards death.”
He then shouted, “Come on, let’s focus on our own things. Let’s stay strong with our values”. The man who rose to fame with the rap group Sexion d’Assaut also mentioned Eid celebrations, “During Eid, everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving is quiet, they don’t celebrate Eid. Christmas we respect, but those are not our celebrations”. Before pointing his finger at non-Christian people who celebrate Christmas anyway, he says: “When I see big Christmas trees at the Mustafas, the Bakaris, I see that people at home don’t really think about it there.” “Come on, we have to focus on that,” he ended his speech.
