France: Converted to Islam overnight “to stop drinking”, he is put on trial for glorifying terrorism

After an express conversion to Islam, which he believed would help him to stop drinking, a resident of Senonches allegedly glorified terrorism on social networks.

According to the gendarmerie’s investigation, the 21-year-old resident of Senonches was easily identified by the IP address of his computer after he published posts on social networks that were categorised by the authorities as “glorification of terrorism via a communication medium”.

The posts welcomed the actions of Hamas and contained hate comments against Israelis and the Jewish people. As he appeared before the court in Chartres on direct appearance, he asked for time to prepare his defence. The judges therefore focused exclusively on his background and personality in order to decide whether he should await his future trial in prison or, on the contrary, be released.

He has been convicted of theft, domestic violence, rebellion and driving under the influence of alcohol in the past and admitted to the judges that he “had major alcohol problems”. It was these problems, as he confided to the personality researcher, that had prompted him to convert to Islam, among other things. In fact, alcohol is forbidden in the Muslim religion.
