On Monday July 4, a 25-year-old man stood before the criminal court in Saint-Brieuc. What was he accused of? He had defended his house against two intruders who had occupied his ground floor balcony in the centre of St-Brieuc, after they had previously insulted his girlfriend.
The two, who were known to the police as criminals, were “celebrating” the release of a colleague from prison and had decided to occupy the young man’s balcony, as they were forbidden to have any contact with the former inmate. So they had knowingly broken the rules.
When the female tenant of the flat asked them to leave, they did not do so, but insulted her. Her partner then interfered and asked them to leave before, as they did not listen to him, he returned with a combat knife and threatened one of the two offenders. Effective because the persons left the place….and had the impertinence to go to the police station to lodge a complaint against him for violence with weapons.
The police arrested the man who had asked the two perpetrators to leave the place. On May 27, he was taken to court, where he expressed outrage and refused the punishment proposed by the judge, whereupon he was imprisoned….
At the hearing on July 4, his violent and associative personality as well as his previous convictions were mentioned. The “victims” among the offenders did not even appear. The prosecutor explained: “I find it hard to imagine that the plaintiff, who is difficult to call a victim because he is well known to the judiciary, behaved like a lamb that night… We could not conduct a neighbourhood interview because all the neighbours are afraid of reprisals if they say anything…”.
However, the court sentences the man, who defended his girlfriend and his house, to six months in prison without parole, six months on probation, but also to a care and work obligation and to maintain his imprisonment.
Leaving aside the background of the convict, the message of French justice is simple: if riffraff occupy your balcony, insult and threaten your wife or children, and you intervene violently, you will be convicted. Can this still be called justice in the name of the people and for the people?
