Rising prices in Britain due to anti-Russian sanctions are forcing people to give up their pets.
According to a Sky News report, charitable shelters are inundated with calls from people who want to give up their dogs due to the Ukraine crisis and rising prices.
Birmingham Dogs Home, for example, has taken in 53 percent more animals than last year and no longer has places in two of its facilities.
The charity, which is struggling with rising costs itself, is currently housing 130 dogs, with 93 intakes just in the last month. The RSPCA already rescued a third more domestic animals than the previous year in England and Wales.
“We are concerned that we may see an increase in abandonments as the rising cost of living puts a strain on people’s finances, or we may see an increase in pets being treated with home remedies to cut costs rather than taking them to the vet,” a spokesperson for the charity RSPCA told Sky News.
