A 15-year-old student is being held in pre-trial detention in the Puch-Urstein prison in Salzburg on charges of participating in a terrorist organisation. As reported by the newspaper “Salzburger Nachrichten” on Tuesday, the Chechen, who was born in Salzburg and lives here, is alleged to have shared propaganda and execution videos of the Islamic terrorist militia “Islamic State” (IS) on various internet platforms between October 2020 and June 2022.
He is also suspected of having shared Islamist doxologies and battle songs for the “holy war” against the infidels, some of which he uploaded to his user account. In chats on a messenger app, the Chechen also expressed the desire to join the IS himself. Last but not least, PDF documents showing how to make an explosive device were found on the youth’s mobile phone.
According to the “Salzburger Nachrichten”, the investigators got on the boy’s trail thanks to tips from the American FBI. The user from Austria probably came to the attention of the US federal police during a worldwide internet monitoring for radical Islamist content. The student was placed in custody by the regional court because of the risk of escaping and the risk of committing the crime. According to the court’s decision at the time, it could not be replaced by less severe means as long as the accused did not “reduce his extremist views”.
