Seven people were arrested on Thursday in East and West Flanders as part of an investigation by the federal prosecutor’s office for allegedly planning an attack in Belgium. The federal prosecutor’s office said it confirmed a report by VRT Nieuws.
The suspects did not yet have a concrete target for their attack, but were actively looking for weapons. Most of the arrested suspects are Chechens. Three of them also have Belgian citizenship. They belong to a group of supporters of the terrorist group “Islamic State”, the Office of the Attorney General continued.
The investigating judge will then decide whether they will be brought to trial and possibly issue an arrest warrant. Possible charges are attempted terrorist attack, participation in the activities of a terrorist group and preparation of a terrorist attack.
