A 16-year-old Viennese is said to have posted several questionable videos showing him handling firearms. “In addition, there are indications that the youth at least sympathises with Islamist ideology,” the Ministry of the Interior (BMI) reported on Saturday. During a house search, another alarm pistol including ammunition, a combat knife, a mobile phone and other electronic data carriers were seized.
According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the accused had posted several videos on Instagram in which he fires shots with a handgun out of a window and in a parking lot and expresses his interest in purchasing ammunition. It later turned out that they were deceptively real-looking alarm pistols. On New Year’s Eve, according to investigators, he posted further videos showing him and another youth blowing up a chewing gum machine with pyrotechnics and pointing a firearm at a group of people standing in the distance.
After the identity of the 16-year-old had been established, he was stopped together with two other youths in a stolen vehicle with stolen licence plates. “The forensic evaluation of the seized data carriers and the investigation of possible radical Islamist connections as well as the identification of further suspects are currently underway,” the Federal Ministry of the Interior said. The 16-year-old was temporarily arrested.
