Inconceivable derailment in the “taz”.
A commentary on the riots in the French capital says: “Paris must burn”! PARDON?
In the article “Protests by young people in France: They have no choice”, author Mohamed Amjahid (35) puts forward remarkable theses about the serious riots in the neighbouring country.
Amjahid writes, for example: “The shots of the burning cars, the fireworks fired at the state authorities seem like a fragile life insurance for France’s racialised youth.”
Violence, rioting and arson as “life insurance” for the perpetrators? Amjahid is obviously completely taking this seriously!
He writes: “In other countries, too, police stations have had to burst into flames in recent years to give the most vulnerable a chance of survival. Few understand this connection between mobilisation and self-protection.”
Indeed, very few are likely to “understand” why setting fire (!) to police stations and attacking police officers is for the “self-protection” and “survival” of the perpetrators of violence.
But Amjahid adds: “From a purely analytical point of view and from the perspective of the demonstrators: Paris must burn so that something could be done about police violence in the country, at least in the short term.”
“Paris must burn”? An inconceivable statement.
Amjahid adds a justification: “The price for the murders committed by police officers and made possible by politics in the first place must be driven up. The author claims, without any evidence, that the Paris police commit “murders” that are made possible by politics. The victims: residents of the hotspot suburbs (banlieues).
Background: In Paris, violent criminals had committed serious riots in the past few days after a policeman shot Nahel M. (17) who had tried to escape a traffic control. M. succumbed to his injuries. Since M.’s death, residents of the hotspot neighbourhoods of the Paris suburbs have been rioting. Demonstrations during the day, riots at night. Paris descends into chaos, destruction and violence.
