A young man was left in critical condition on Friday last week after being assaulted by a Tunisian migrant in the center of Clermont-Ferrand, a small city in central France. He was injured while defending a female friend, who was also present, after the migrant insulted her, according to the newspaper La Montagne.
A charge of committing an act of violence resulting in disability is being considered against the Tunisian suspect, who is 20 years old. The migrant already had a court date scheduled for December as the result of another act of violence he had earlier committed.
At around 4:15 a.m. on Feb. 28, the victim, who is 25 years old, was standing in front of a kebab restaurant with a female friend. The prosecution has accused the migrant, who was working as a delivery man, of making an insulting comment about the young woman’s dress and appearance. Her friend stood up for her and got into an argument with the migrant, after which the latter is accused of hitting him in the face, causing him to fall to the pavement and hit his head. This resulted in serious injuries.
By the time police responded to the scene, the migrant had fled, leaving behind his scooter and other equipment. The victim was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Based on a description of the Tunisian’s appearance, however, officers were able to locate him on Tuesday afternoon and take him into custody.
As of Wednesday, the young man was still in the hospital and listed as being in critical condition.
