Following the discovery of a woman’s body in the River Neckar near Nürtingen (Esslingen district), the police have arrested a suspect. The 37-year-old Iranian has been in custody since Thursday. The man is said to have known the victim. He has so far refused to make a statement.

The man lives in a refugee centre in Oberboihingen (Esslingen district). He was arrested there, his room was searched and evidence was secured. In addition, the woman’s car, which was initially untraceable, was found in Oberboihingen. The police spokesman did not say where exactly it was found or whether it played a role in the crime. The car is now being searched for evidence.

According to German broadcaster Südwestrundfunk (SWR), the victim is said to have given language lessons to refugees, which may be why the Iranian and the woman knew each other.

The body of the 66-year-old woman was discovered in the River Neckar near Nürtingen on Sunday. According to the results of an autopsy, the woman died a violent death.

It is still unclear exactly how the woman was killed. The woman had lived not far from where her body was found.
