A man armed with a machete triggered a major police and fire brigade operation in Essen (North Rhine-Westphalia) yesterday, Saturday. He allegedly set fires and crashed into two grocery shops. Numerous people were injured. According to police reports, numerous emergency calls were received at short intervals yesterday, Saturday, at around 5.10 p.m. about two fires in apartment blocks. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fires and injured people had to be given medical treatment. Among the 30 injured were eight seriously injured children.
But that was not all: shortly afterwards it was reported that a man had driven a van into two shops. He got out of the second shop and attacked several people with his machete. A video circulating on social networks shows him entering the shop with the machete.
Shortly after the second attack, police arrested a Syrian man suspected of the offences in a backyard. Nothing is yet known about the background.
