An Algerian national, already the subject of a deportation order, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after being found guilty of committing approximately 80 thefts and burglaries across France in the space of just three months.
The 26-year-old named Souleyman B., who has no fixed residence, appeared before a French court on Monday to be sentenced for a multitude of crimes committed between June and August last year across Laval, Saint-Berthevin, and Changé in northwestern France.
It is understood that 76 victims were recorded by the prosecution, both individuals and businesses.
The Algerian national was arrested at a friend’s house on March 30 and was initially due to appear before a court under the immediate appearance regime on April 3, however this was postponed until April 17.
When questioned by police under caution, the convict mentioned how some crimes were committed with “friends,” but refused to provide details of their identity due to fearing for his life. The Algerian migrant would regularly break car windows to retrieve the commands to open garages or doors and burgle the corresponding homes, France Bleu reported. He then sold the stolen goods.
Souleyman B. justified his actions by claiming he was destitute and was trying to survive.
Amaury Bucco, a journalist with CNews, reported that a police investigation has found that the number of criminal acts attributed to Souleyman B. will rise to 115 thefts and burglaries.
In addition to his prison sentence, the convict has been issued with a three-year ban from entering French territory. How effective such a ban will be remains to be seen, considering the Algerian national was already subject to an order to leave France (OQTF) after being sentenced for theft and drug use in Montpellier back in June 2020.
In fact, data has shown that only 0.2. percent of Algerians are deported to their home country. The shocking statistic was released following the rape, torture and murder of 13-year-old schoolgirl Lola last year in Paris. The girl’s attacker was also an Algerian migrant scheduled for deportation, but the deportation had never been carried out.
