An Austrian man has appeared in court charged with a terror offence after being arrested in a business park in west London over the weekend.
Magomed-Husejn Dovtaev was arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police Counter-Terrorism Command at Chiswick Business Park in Gunnersbury on Saturday.
The 30-year-old is accused of collecting information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.
He appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today wearing a grey sweatshirt and tracksuit bottoms. He spoke briefly through an interpreter to confirm his identity.
The case was adjourned until Tuesday at the same court for legal reasons and owing to the fact there was no German interpreter available.
Senior district judge Paul Goldspring told Dovtaev: ‘Some cases require the Attorney General, who is the principal law officer for England and Wales to give permission to prosecute.
‘Until that permission is given, the court has no jurisdiction to take the jurisdictional steps to take the decision over where your trial can take place.
‘Likely because [Dovtaev’s arrest and charge] was over the weekend, that consent is yet to be given, and so we can’t make any progress on your case today and I am therefore adjourning until tomorrow so that consent can be gained and then the court can deal with the jurisdictional issues that are required of it.
‘Your lawyer has also not had the full opportunity to take full instructions that are required. We were let down by an interpreter this morning and the replacement interpreter has only just arrived.’
The judge remanded Dovtaev until tomorrow when he will appear again at Westminster Magistrates Court at 2pm.
Dovtaev was remanded in custody until his appearance in court tomorrow.
