Slogans were spotted on Rotterdam’s Erasmus Bridge, from which the national fireworks display is traditionally fired in the Netherlands, during the New Year’s Eve celebrations, a police spokeswoman told the ANP news agency.
In bright letters, the slogans “White lives matter” (a counterpoint to the anti-racist “Black lives matter” movement founded in 2013 and which in 2020 had a major breakthrough in the United States in reaction to several cases of alleged police violence, ed.) and “Zwarte Piet deed niets verkeerd” [Zwarte Piet has done nothing wrong, transl.] (referring to the controversial black-clad folk character) were displayed on the bridge, according to Dutch media RTL Nieuws.
The texts appear to have been projected from a boat, police said. An investigation has been launched. Due to windy weather, the New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Rotterdam was cancelled on Saturday.
