France: One of the staff members for the surveillance and rescue operations centre in the English Channel was monitored by the secret service as a radical Islamist

According to information from Europe 1, one of the staff members of the Regional Surveillance and Rescue Centre (Cross) in Gris-Nez, which was in charge of the rescue operations on the day of the death of the 27 migrants in the English Channel, was reported to the intelligence services.

This is a new element that overshadows the profile of one of the operational staff of the Regional Surveillance and Rescue Centre (Cross) in Gris-Nez. Revelations in recent days from Le Monde newspaper and Le Canard Enchaîné newspaper have put a strain on the work of French rescue workers on that November 24, 2021, when 27 migrants trying to cross the English Channel to British shores lost their lives. This went so far that the Secretary of State for Maritime Affairs, Hervé Berville, was in favour of consequences if the incidents were to prove true.

According to information from Europe 1, one of the employees, who works as a boatman in the navy and is now 21 years old, had already been under surveillance by the intelligence services for several years because she belongs to radical Islam. She came to the attention of the services in 2015, when she was still a young teenager. She was reported to the internal security services and at that time was being watched by the Central Service of the Territorial Intelligence Service (SCRT) of the North because of her closeness to Islamism.

(…) It is against this background that she joins the National Navy. Upon her recruitment, the Defence Intelligence and Security Directorate (DRSD) naturally looks into her case, considering her past. After two enquiries, one when she joins the school and one when she leaves, the Armed Forces Internal Intelligence Service gives a restrictive opinion on her clearance for national defence secrecy, as she still has a record in the national intelligence service, even though her file is closed. On the other hand, the Service considers that there are no obstacles to her employment. Europe 1
