Bizarre appearance of a North African defendant before the Dresden District Court.
When asked for his personal details, he reads off his name and date of birth from the indictment. The prosecutor inquires: “Is that your name?”. His answer: “No”.
The man has already been convicted twice for arson and a knife attack, is in prison in Dresden after Poland (where he had absconded) extradited him. The new charge is for another knife attack three years ago.
In the prosecution’s case, the accused goes by the name of Elias S., born in Libya. On Friday, he claimed that his name was Mohamed O., born in Tunisia.
When asked for his date of birth, he said, “I don’t know right now.”
Whether he will be convicted is questionable: his victims are also migrants, some of them deported or of unknown residence …
