While names like Kevin and Jacqueline no longer appear at the top of the hit list, Turkish and Arabic baby names are heavily in vogue. Yusuf, Ibrahim, Malik and Zeynep are also becoming more popular in Austria, the latest data from Statistics Austria show.
The name Kevin was given only 21 times in Austria in 2021, while babies were named Malik five times as often (111). Ibrahim is also becoming increasingly popular and was given 51 times in 2021. Yusuf (79) , Moham(m)ed (57) and Ahmed (54) also show a positive trend.
Oriental Muslim names are also very much in vogue among girls. The name Zeynep was given 58 times last year and even made it into the top ten in the Favoriten district of Vienna, shortly followed by Meryem (47) and Azra (46). The former trend name Jacqueline has almost completely disappeared from the annual statistics: Only one girl was called by this name last year.
On the StaTatlas website you can search for all names in Austria and their regional frequency. It is noticeable, however, that all names that differ by even one letter are told separately. This is the case, for example, with Mohammed, which is spelled Mohamed or also Muhamed in Arabic. Also with Philip/Philipp/Filip, the different spellings are counted separately.
