The shock must have been great. Hassan Iquioussen, who has lived in northern France for decades but does not have French citizenship, applied this winter for an extension of a ten-year residence permit that was now expiring. In his eyes, a mere formality.
Hassan Iquioussen, considered a close confidant of the Musulmans de France (formerly Union des organisations islamiques en France), the French branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, has never been seriously troubled despite his unequivocal positions in favour of radical Islam, not to mention a serious anti-Semitic lapse many years ago. The file put together by the Northern Prefecture on Hassan Iquioussen convinced the Commission for the Expulsion of Foreigners, presided over by the President of the Lille Court. It gave a positive opinion on the expulsion on June 22. The decision was not a foregone conclusion. With five children, fifteen grandchildren and all his assets declared in France, Hassan Iquioussen could claim to be integrated in his very own way. At the meeting of the departmental commission on expulsion, the minutes of which Le Point has read, the prefect of the Nord department travelled in person to address the case before the judges, receiving the full support of the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin.
He emphasised the imam’s anti-Semitism. His remarks, made in 2004, 2005 and 2014, were “explicitly aimed at the Jews and not at the State of Israel or Zionism”. Hassan Iquioussen described them as “ungrateful” and “stingy” who lived “among themselves in ghettos”. The imam, the prefect said, had also publicly stated that “the Zionist lobby has been after his life since 2004” when he learned that his expulsion was planned.
