German city of Cologne wants to do without cathedral in logo – now comes the mosque?

German humour takes some time to get used to for many outsiders, especially when it comes from the carnival stronghold of Cologne. But there is one thing most people in Cologne can’t take a joke about: their cityscape-defining cathedral, one of the largest churches in Germany. For three years now, however, it has had competition from the DITIB mosque in Cologne-Ehrenfeld.

Only eight years ago, the city was subjected to ridicule when the 40,000 euro city logo was presented: It showed the cathedral only as two prongs as in a red heartbeat illustration, the Rhine was only a curve. Equally unlucky was Cathedral Provost Guido Assmann last year, who presented the new emblem for the diocese, for which he paid a whole 80,000 euros – and which in the end turned out to be a variant of the 50-year-old emblem of the “Berchtesgaden National Park”.

Now the metropolis has one more farce – a new logo has been presented, at least in the city colours red and white. But now completely without the cathedral. Now the internet is raging again, and those responsible are being accused of wanting to hide the cathedral in favour of the new and very controversial mosque building in the district of Ehrenfeld.

It must have been a forefather of the cathedral provost Guido Assmann who said: “You can do it like the priest Assmann. He did it like Father Nolte. He did it the way he wanted…”.
