The Court of Appeal in Brussels has just revoked the Belgian citizenship in absentia of 13 people convicted of terrorism, La Libre Belgique reported on Monday. The sentences were published today in the Belgian Official Gazette.
The revocation of citizenship is a measure with framework conditions that can only affect dual nationals. The making of stateless persons is excluded, the newspaper reminds.
Twelve of the 13 revocations of citizenship concern men who had joined the ranks of the jihadists in Syria between the end of December 2012 and December 2014. The 13th had joined in Afghanistan in 2007. They were removed from the civil registers.
These 13 dual nationals, the vast majority of them Belgians and Moroccans, had all been convicted in absentia in Belgium for terrorism. Le Vif
