German authorities are preparing for the release of more than 30 Islamists this year. Specifically, the Federal Ministry of Justice has knowledge of “15 to 20 persons” who are currently in a German prison for an offence in the field of Islamist-motivated terrorism and are expected to be released in 2022. This is what a spokeswoman told the newspaper WELT AM SONNTAG in response to an enquiry.
In addition, there are 18 other persons from the “area of Islamism or suspicion of Islamism” who are currently under special observation by the law enforcement authorities and are also to be released this year. The release of extremists is often a cause of concern for the security authorities. Some detainees have further radicalised themselves behind bars – and commit crimes shortly after the end of their imprisonment.
