94 % are men: asylum applications in Austria tripled, most of them by Afghans

Asylum applications in Austria have already tripled compared to the previous year – and the new wave of refugees, mostly Afghan, Syrian and Tunisian men, does not seem to be abating. If the arrival figures remain this high, Austria will reach a similar level this year as in 2015 and 2016.

In the first half of the year, 31,050 persons applied for asylum in Austria. Almost all applicants are men. The Ukrainian war refugees, the majority of whom are female, were not included in the statistics of the Ministry of the Interior.
94 per cent of asylum applicants are men, only 2015 applications were filed by women in the first half of 2022. Most asylum applications were filed by Afghans (7325), Syrians (6680) and Tunisians (3810), with Pakistan (3110) and India (2025) in fourth and fifth place. However, only Syrian and Afghan men stand a good chance of receiving a positive decision – Tunisia, Pakistan and India are considered safe countries of origin.

The number of applications has risen sharply again compared to the past seven years. If arrivals remain this high in the second half of the year, the year 2022 could be second only to 2015 in the ranking of the most asylum applications in Austria. At that time, 88,340 people applied for asylum, in the following year 2016 it was 42,285 – this number could be exceeded this year.
