State media outlets in Belgium have expressed concern that reporting on the serious health condition of a Vlaams Belang politician may contribute to the “humanisation of the far-right”.

In early April, Guy D’haeseleer, the Mayor of Ninove in the Flemish province of East Flanders and a prominent figure within Vlaams Belang, was hospitalised with acute liver failure caused by hepatitis.

Since then, he has remained in intensive care and urgently requires a liver transplant. A compatible donor has yet to be found.

Due to the critical nature of his condition, combined with his political profile, updates on his health and how his family has been coping have featured heavily in the news.

Like many countries, Belgium has faced a severe shortage of donor livers and long waiting lists.

Regarding D’haeseleer, though, some journalists within State media have started to question the extensive coverage of his condition.

They have argued that such reporting risked fostering public sympathy for D’haeseleer and, by extension, the Vlaams Belang party, which the Left has labelled “far-right”.

“Not a day goes by without the Flemish media mentioning the state of health of the far-right Mayor,” Francophone news channel RTBF stated.

“Between the humanisation of the far-right and information to the public, where should the limit be drawn?”

The journalists concerned were inspired by an April 14 piece on VRT NWS, the Dutch-speaking State broadcaster, where the News Ombudsman at the station, Judit Verstraete, spoke about the question of the perceived excessive focus on D’haeseleer’s health.

“One may well ask whether that [media attention] is necessary. Surely some restraint seems appropriate here now,” she said.

“It remains a very personal situation. Just because the information is available does not mean it has to be brought out. The editors should therefore consider with every update whether it transcends the personal situation sufficiently to report on it.”

On RTBF, it was noted that many in the media broadly reported on the case under headlines including My family even came to say goodbye, Human solidarity overcomes political differences and The difficult quest for a donor of faith: ‘We lack organs’.

Laura Jacobs, a political scientist from the University of Antwerp specialising in the “far right”, said: “It might seem surprising at first glance” that a Vlaams Belang politician received so much attention.

She added that he was already known to the broader public before his illness, due to his political success in Ninove, where he gained an absolute majority. Jacobs also said Flemish media tended to “personalise” its reporting about “famous” people.

In October, she had written that the media should not approach D’haeseleer on a personal level but “be critical, use fact-checks and substantive rebuttals”.

A spokesperson for Vlaams Belang told Brussels Signal on April 18: “What on earth are the Francophone media focusing on, while this man is fighting for his life in hospital? This is nothing short of disgraceful.”

Despite being the second-biggest party in the country, Vlaams Belang has been placed behind a cordon sanitaire at the national level, meaning all other parties have refused to work with it.

In the media, the party has only been allowed to appear on current affairs programmes — and thus is severely underrepresented in the broadcast media compared to its voter share.

Vlaams Belang media treatment in Flanders has improved in recent times compared to the past, when all coverage was uniquely negative. In Wallonia, though, this negative trend has continued and exclusion remains the norm.

RTBF has not limited its approach to Belgian politicians only. In January, it famously refused to broadcast the inauguration speech of US President Donald Trump live, having claimed he spread a “racist, far-right, xenophobic” message.

The station decided to broadcast his speech slightly later than live, apparently to allow time for analysis to be undertaken.

Belgian State media ‘fears humanising critically ill Vlaams Belang politician’

Climate activists from the left-wing group ‘Restore Wetlands,’ known for resorting to criminal acts to advance their agenda, forced their way past protective barriers on Wednesday and climbed aboard the Vasa—the world’s only surviving intact 17th-century ship—housed inside the museum that bears its name.

According to Expressen, the activists tied themselves to the mast, unfurled a banner reading “Stop Peat Mining,” and shouted slogans before being removed by police. Their organization—which, in its manifesto, declares that “playing along” with parliamentary democracy is “purely destructive”—was proudly and unapologetically promoting the stunt on its website.

The Vasa, a warship built for King Gustav II Adolf, sank just minutes into its maiden voyage outside Stockholm in August 1628, killing all but 30 of its crew. It was rediscovered in 1956 by an amateur archaeologist, with salvage operations beginning in 1959 and continuing until 1961. The museum that now houses the ship was inaugurated in 1988, and the Vasa is widely regarded as a vital part of Sweden’s cultural heritage.

Lars Amréus, Director General of the Swedish National Maritime and Transport Museums—of which the Vasa Museum is a part—said in a press release:

We strongly condemn this type of action, which endangers both personal safety and our shared cultural heritage. Such actions have no place in museums or the cultural sector at large. Our main focus is to ensure that Vasa has not been damaged.

Amréus emphasized the ship’s fragility: “Ninety-eight to ninety-nine percent of the ship is original, so they have undoubtedly moved on original parts of the ship,” which could have caused harm to the vessel.

He noted that while climate activists have, in other incidents, damaged artifacts with paint or glue, there is currently no indication that this kind of vandalism occurred in this case.

As of now, no significant harm to the historic ship has been identified, though further inspections will be conducted, according to the museum. Still, putting the best-preserved 17th-century ship at risk “reveals the activists’ fanaticism,” columnist Linda Jerneck wrote: “Restore Wetlands wants us to show solidarity with future generations—by pissing on what previous generations left behind.”

Sane people would stop beating their heads against a wall after a while, being smart enough to realize it won’t come down that way and they should try something else. But we aren’t dealing with smart people here; we’re dealing with Democrats, so their response to having their insistence rejected by voters is to insist harder and louder – the kind of thinking that passes through the head of a rowdy drunk being tossed out of the bar while arguing ever louder and more flailingly that he wasn’t doing anything to warrant being invited to leave.

Where are the “trans men” (women) dominating or even just performing adequately in men’s sports? If biology and gender are social constructs, sure, someone would break through. And there’s no way we wouldn’t have heard about it – the first girl hitting a home run, .300 or even just above the Mendoza Line in high school baseball will be the subject of a ticker tape parade on MSNBC, so you know they don’t exist yet.

Weirdly, these people celebrate a boy beating girls at anything because they’re pot-committed to the concept that God is continuing to make more and more mistakes in the assembly room in his old age, and it’s not a fad or social contagion in an age where getting attention for any reason is the goal, good or bad be damned.

It’s gross, really.

This is the hill they’re willing to die on. Let them. Help them do it.

Honestly, it’s not really a disconnect, it’s ignorance. The modern left is the natural evolution of the Nazis. Of the entire progressive movement, actually. When leftists are marching holding signs reading “Socialism beats Fascism,” they’ve lost their collective mind.

The Nazis were not known for their sense of humor, so when they named themselves the National SOCIALIST German Workers Party, they were pulling a hilarious prank; they meant it. Communists, socialists and fascists were only slightly different, mostly regarding private property and government seizure. Like male Betta fish, who will fight any other male they are in a bowl with to the death for dominance, the females, the three legs of the progressive stool, fought to be in control, not over the general direction of their evil movement.

We aren’t dealing with people bound by reality here; we’re dealing with people specifically unbound by it. When you know that world record time for the women’s 100-meter dash not only wouldn’t qualify for the men’s Olympic semi-finals but that it is a half second slower than any of the top 10 records for high school boys and still insist there is no biological difference between the only two genders that exist, you are insane.

Democrats are insane. Still, embracing that insanity is easier than trying to sell their policies, I guess.

Efforts to exclude the right-populist Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) from the German political system—despite it coming second in the recent federal elections and leading national polls for the first time earlier this month—are reportedly crumbling. But establishment figures are scrambling to ensure that this so-called ‘firewall’ remains in place.

Jens Spahn, an ally of incoming chancellor Friedrich Merz and fellow member of his centre-right CDU, last week told Bild that politicians must “simply acknowledge … how many millions of Germans voted for the AfD,” in part because they “wanted to tell us [establishment types] something.” He also “recommend[ed] that

Hardly the most extreme of proposals, though the response would suggest otherwise.

The left-wing SPD’s Matthias Miersch also bashed Spahn as “fundamentally wrong and very, very dangerous,” while the party’s parliamentary manager, Katja Mast, also insisted she would “continue to protect our democratic institutions” by blocking the widely democratically-backed AfD.

Clearly unnerved by this backlash, Spahn later stressed that he “didn’t use the word ‘normalisation’” when discussing the AfD, adding: “Nobody really needs to tell me what kind of people are sitting in their ranks. I know that.”

For its part, the AfD declared on Thursday it is still willing to cooperate with the CDU, praising “more and more leading Christian Democrats” who are “calling for what should actually be a matter of course in a democracy: to finally treat the AfD like any other opposition party.” Party officials added that

For the first time, Muslim students are the largest religious group in Vienna’s schools, underlining the incredible demographic transformation taking place in the Austrian city. The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) is now raising the alarm.

Muslim students now account for 41.2 percent of all students, while Christian students fell to 34.5 percent. The trend is only growing, and is accompanied by rising problems, including violence in schools, anti-Semitism, and contempt for women.

The data was obtained from the office of Bettina Emmerling, the city councilor responsible for education. Last year, the proportion of students of Islamic faith was 39.4 percent, but now, for the first time, it has crossed 40 percent, reports Exxpress.

Meanwhile, the right-wing Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) is raising the alarm about the rapid demographic change in Austria and Vienna.

“Austrians will soon be strangers in their own country,” said Hannes Amesbauer, security spokesman for the FPÖ.

FPÖ National Council member Maximilian Weinzierl, the FPÖ youth spokesperson and federal chairman of the Freedom Party Youth said:

Meanwhile, the government is attempting to head off the problems brought on by Vienna’s exploding Muslim population. According to Emmerling, a politician for the NEOS party, the principles of human dignity, pluralism and democracy, as well as gender equality, must be clear to young people in particular. In her role, Kometter is facing a never-ending deluge of parents complaining about the situations in their classrooms. “For example, there is a mother whose son is in a class with 22 students — only three of whom can speak German.” The result is pure chaos. “The teacher is not taken seriously and is not understood.”

The government’s response is not to improve the situation between teachers and students, but instead race to make space for more newcomers. Krebs states that all green space is being paved over, the government is building container classrooms, and huge school extensions are being constructed. It sounds like a bad joke – but it is a bitter reality: two men, convicted of supporting the terrorist organisation ‘Islamic State’ (IS), are back in Warendorf ( North Rhine-Westphalia). Exactly where they were arrested by special forces in a refugee centre last summer.

Now they are on the loose again – despite the fact that, according to the court, they are ideologically close to IS. This is reported by the newspaper Westfälische Nachrichten.
The two Tajiks had allegedly come to Germany as Ukrainian refugees. But instead of seeking protection, they are said to have plotted terrorist attacks and channelled money to IS.
The Federal Public Prosecutor accuses seven men of having founded a terrorist cell with a clear mission: Attacks in Germany and Western Europe – as media-effective and brutal as possible. They are also alleged to have provided financial support to the so-called Islamic State (IS). The group is said to have met several times in changing line-ups to push ahead with their plans. After months of pre-trial detention, the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court sentenced two of the men last week to one year’s imprisonment each – which, however, has already been served due to the pre-trial detention.

After the judgement, the men were not taken directly into custody pending deportation – but returned to Warendorf, according to the Westfälische Nachrichten newspaper. In other words, exactly where they had once been arrested by special units in a refugee centre. When asked by NIUS about the current whereabouts of the convicted men, the press office of the district town of Warendorf said: ‘I cannot provide any information on this at the moment. However, I can inform you that the immigration authorities have exhausted all possibilities under residence law.’

When asked by NIUS about the security situation in Warendorf, the district gave an evasive answer. The Münster police’s state security service would have to be asked about the current threat situation. He continued: ‘In principle, people who are trained in weapons and adhere to an extremist ideology pose a potential threat to liberal societies.’

District Administrator Dr Olaf Gericke (CDU) vented his anger to the Westfälische Nachrichten newspaper: ‘Anyone who supports such a terrorist organisation obviously rejects our Western values and social order. Such people have no place here.’ The CDU politician calls for consistent deportation.

But the judiciary is hesitating. Because the men in Tajikistan could allegedly face torture, the administrative court has already halted the deportation plans in another case.
A few weeks ago, there was a spectacular incident in Oelde (also in the district of Warendorf): an IS supporter who had already been convicted had barricaded himself in a police station, pulled out a cutter knife, injured himself – and thus prevented his deportation. Instead of deportation, there was another standstill: an urgent decision by the Higher Administrative Court stopped the measure at the last minute. Since then, the man has been at large again – another setback for the authorities in the fight against convicted extremists.

District Administrator Gericke even wrote to Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) – hoping that better diplomatic assurances from Tajikistan would convince the courts.

Nevertheless, in response to an enquiry from NIUS, the Federal Foreign Office announced on Wednesday that it was ‘in ongoing talks’ with the Tajik authorities. How long will the process take? Remains undetermined.

Judges in the Netherlands have reportedly refused to send asylum seekers back to Belgium over what they saw as a lack of care facilities.

The asylum seekers filed their initial requests in Belgium and should, according to the Dublin Regulation, be processed in Belgium.

According to the regulation, a cornerstone of the Common European Asylum System, the country in which an asylum seeker first applied for asylum was responsible for either accepting or rejecting the claim and the seeker may not restart the process in another jurisdiction

Four Dutch judges, though, were said have overriden this in the case of Belgium due to perceived issues with the care of asylum seekers, Belgian left-wing magazine Knack reported on April 16.

In one ruling, according to the magazine, the judge concerned said:  “There are indications of serious fears that the reception facilities in Belgium contain systemic flaws.”

The case regarded a Georgian man who possibly faced ending up on the streets due to a lack of shelter in Belgium, with too many people on the asylum housing waiting list and Belgium’s capacity to house them having been exceeded.

If asylum seekers systematically ended up having to sleep rough, it could lead to infractions of Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights for inhuman or degrading treatment, experts said.

Last year, the former Belgian State Secretary of Asylum Nicole de Moor decided to prioritise migrant families for shelter, putting single men on waiting lists, a policy that the current government has upheld.

NGOs working with and for migrants have said the government should do more to shelter migrants and said it was a political choice not to do so.

They suggested spreading migrants across the country in order not to overload a handful of cities dealing with asylum seekers, or give them “alternative material support” if they did have shelter space available.

The Dutch Council of State has been considering whether Belgium was doing enough for the reception of asylum seekers. Its judgment is expected in June.

The council investigated the same issue last year but reopened the case after receiving new indications of problems, reportedly provided by NGOs.

According to figures from the Belgian Immigration Department (DVZ), 45 people were transferred from the Netherlands to Belgium under the Dublin Regulation last year.

Brussels Signal reached out to the current Belgian State Secretary of Asylum and Migration Anneleen Van Bossuyt but had not received a reply at the time of writing.

The U.K. Supreme Court has issued a ruling stating that “woman” in law refers to a biological female, and that transgender “women” are not female in the eyes of the law.

In a unanimous verdict, the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom ruled today that legally transgender “women” are not women, since a woman is legally defined by “biological sex.”

Published April 16, the Supreme Court’s 88-page verdict was handed down on the case of Women Scotland Ltd (Appellant) v. The Scottish Ministers (Respondent). The ruling marks the end of a battle of many years between the Scottish government and women’s right campaigners who sought to oppose the government’s promotion of transgender ideology.

In 2018, the Scottish government issued a decision to allow the definition of “woman” to include men who assume their gender to be female, opening the door to allowing so-called “transgender” individuals to identify as women.

This guidance was challenged by women’s rights campaigners, arguing that a woman should be defined in line with biological sex, and in 2022 the Scottish government was forced to change its definition after the court found that such a move was outside the government’s “legislative competence.”

Given this, the government issued new guidance which sought to cover both aspects: saying that biological women are women, but also that men with a “gender recognition certificate” (GRC) are also considered women. A GRC is given to people who identify as the opposite sex and who have had medical or surgical interventions in an attempt to “reassign” their gender.

Women Scotland Ltd appealed this new guidance. At first it was rejected by inner courts, but upon their taking the matter to the Supreme Court in March last year, the nation’s highest judicial body took up the case.

Today, with the ruling issued against transgender ideology, women’s campaigners are welcoming the news as a win for women’s safety.

“A thing of beauty,” praised Lois McLatchie Miller from the Alliance Defending Freedom legal group.

“They looked at the whole argument, not just who goes in what bathroom and trans women. This is going to change organisations, employers, service providers,” Maya Forstater, chief executive of Sex Matters, told the Telegraph. “Everyone is going to have to pay attention to this, this is from the highest court in the land. It’s saying sex in the Equality Act is biological sex. Self ID is dead.”

“Victory,” commented Charlie Bently-Astor, a prominent campaigner for biological reality against the transgender movement, after she nearly underwent surgical transition herself at a younger age.

“After 15 years of insanity, the U.K. Supreme Court has ruled that men who say they are ‘trans women’ are not women,” wrote leader of the Christian political movement David Kurten.

Leader of the Conservative Party – the opposition to the current Labour government – Kemi Badenoch welcomed the court’s ruling, writing that “saying ‘trans women are women’ was never true in fact and now isn’t true in law, either.”

Others lamented the fact that the debate even was taking place, let alone having gone to the Supreme Court.

“What a parody we live in,” commented Reform Party candidate Joseph Robertson.

Rupert Lowe MP – who has risen to new prominence in recent weeks for his outspoken condemnation of the immigration and rape gang crisis – wrote, “Absolute madness that we’re even debating what a woman is – it’s a biological fact. No amount of woke howling will ever change that.”

However, the Supreme Court did not wish to get pulled into siding with certain arguments, with Lord Hodge of the tribunal stating that “we counsel against reading this judgment as a triumph of one or more groups in our society at the expense of another. It is not.”

The debate has taken center stage in the U.K. in recent years, not least for the role played by the current Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Starmer himself has become notorious throughout the nation for his contradictions and inability to answer the question of what a woman is, having flip-flopped on saying that a woman can have a penis, due to his support for the transgender movement.

At the time of going to press, neither Starmer nor his deputy Angela Rayner issued a statement about the Supreme Court ruling. There has been no statement issued from the Scottish government either, nor from the office of the first minister.

Transgender activists have expectedly condemned the ruling as “a disgusting attack on trans rights.” One leading transgender campaigner individual told Sky News, “I am gutted to see the judgement from the Supreme Court which ends 20 years of understanding that transgender people with a GRC are able to be, for all intents and purposes, legally recognized as our true genders.”
