At least 11 people were killed while 60 others suffered injuries when two cars drove into a crowd at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, the media reported on Friday.
Police forces intervened on the scene and the market was closed, the reports said, citing eyewitnesses. It was further stated one driver has been apprehended by security forces.
The details and possible motives of the attack are currently under investigation.
Not content with frequent plannedattacks on Yuletide Christmas markets, it seems that Islamists are now infiltrating them. Along the usual seasonal fare, a festive gathering in Darmstadt, Hesse, organized by the Evangelical Michaelsgemeinde, offered a wide range of pro-Hamas and antisemitic products to its attendees.
Backed by a From the River to the Sea poster, activists sold a variety of radical-chic tat. This included:
Keychains emblazoned with the Hamas logo
Cloth bags featuring a map of Israel inscribed with the word Palestine
Gingerbread hearts displaying political messages
Items applying the Holocaust-inspired slogan âNever Againâ to the Israel-Hamas war sparked by the October 7th Islamist pogrom.
Campaigners also distributed flyers accusing the Jewish state of genocide against the Palestinians of Gaza.
According to Hesseâs antisemitism commissioner Uwe Becker of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the event was being misused to spread hatred of Jews:
Unbelievable, completely unacceptable and absolutely scandalous how a platform was infamously provided for Hamas propaganda and Holocaust relativization in Darmstadt.
The Jewish Community of Darmstadt organisation, backed by several allies, responded with a formal criminal complaint against the Michaelsgemeinde (Michaelâs Community) parish and the âDarmstadt4Palestineâ group.
The parish is affiliated to the larger Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau, which described the Christmas market as âscandalousâ:
The desire to stand up for people in needâincluding in Gazaâis fundamentally legitimate. However, a general anti-Israel and delegitimizing choice of words and the sale of objects with symbols that are connected to the terrorist organization Hamas and the questioning of Israelâs right to exist are unacceptable to us.
Perhaps the only positive news about this particular event is that it wasnât the target of an Islamist attack.
American tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has publicly backed the hard-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
In a reaction on X to a video by Naomi Seibt, a German political activist, Musk posted on December 20: âOnly the AfD can save Germany.â
AfD co-leader Alice Weidel said she was pleased about his support and claimed the Left was destroying the country.
Seibt, a right-wing activist sometimes nicknamed âthe anti-Gretaâ due to her opposition to climate activist Greta Thunberg, had uploaded a video on X. In it she claimed the Christian Democratic (CDU) politician Friedrich Merz had been declared presumptive future chancellor of Germany by many, disregarding the AfD.
She went on to point out that Merz was open to collaborating with the Greens, meaning, she said, Germany would largely continue its economic struggles.
Seibt added that Merz had slammed Libertarian Argentinian President Javier Milei and Musk himself over what Merz had called their free-market approach.
AfD MP Alice Weidel said in reaction to Muskâs comment: âYes! You are perfectly right, Elon Musk!â
âPlease also have a look into my interview on President Trump, how socialist Merkel ruined our country, how the Soviet European Union destroys the countryâs economic backbone and malfunctioning Germany!,â she said.
Following that, the AfD partyâs official page on Xposted: âClear words from Elon Musk.â
The party used the tech billionaireâs apparent endorsement to appeal for more members. âIf you also want to save Germany, then join in and fill out the membership application right away!â
Others were less enthusiastic about the hard-right party.
Thorsten Alsleben, head of the The Initiative Neue Soziale Marktwirtschaft lobby organisation, financed by employers, posted on X: âThe AfD is on Putinâs leash.â
âThey want to leave the EU, which would massively damage Germany as an export country (âŹ200 billion in economic damage for Germany per year). Maybe you should find out what the AfD is planning.â
Julian Röpcke, a military analyst and senior editor with the newspaper Bild, claimed on X on December 20 that Muskâs post was a form of âinterference in the German election campaign by a tech billionaire who uses algorithms to decide what is heardâ.
âIf the federal government and the democratic opposition do not respond with penalties, there will be no help for our eroding democracy.â
âLast but not least, Musk is not only spreading his own opinion but also election advertising for the AfD of this well-known AfD-affiliated activist [Seibt],â he said.
âThis alone is forbidden to social networks under EU law by means of an algorithm push. He simply ignores it.â
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor OrbĂĄnâs government has offered political asylum to Polish opposition Conservative (PiS) MP Marcin Romanowski. The PM said that he would offer such sanctuary to all Polish opposition members who felt themselves unjustly persecuted by Prime Minister Donald Tuskâs centre-left government.
Orbanâs decision was disclosed to the media by Romanowskiâs attorney Bartosz Lewandowski. He has been representing Romanowski in a case which has seen his client accused of embezzling state funds and participating in an âorganised crime groupâ.
âThe Hungarian government has accepted Marcin Romanowskiâs asylum request as a result of actions taken by the Polish government and its prosecutors which were endangering his rights and freedomsâ, Lewandowski wrote on platform X on December 19.
He added that âthis is the first case of a Polish politician being granted international protection in another country since Poland regained independence in 1989.â
Commenting the decision, Balazs Orban, a key aide to the Hungarian PM Viktor OrbĂĄn, wrote on platform X that Romanowski had been arrested in Poland in the summer despite of him being covered by Council of Europe immunity, even though he was later freed by the courts.
Romanowski, a former deputy justice minister in the last PiS government, had his Polish parliamentary immunity removed by Tuskâs parliamentary majority. He disappeared as a Polish court decided on December 9 that he should be detained for three months to stop the opposition MP perverting the course of justice.
Following his disappearance the prosecutors obtained an international warrant for his arrest from a Polish court on December 18.
Romanowski, interviewed by Polish independent television wPolsce24 on December 19, said that he claimed political asylum so that he could speak publicly about both his own plight and the situation in Poland.
In his asylum application he claimed that the prosecution service in Poland had been illegally seized by the current government and that courts were under pressure to pursue political opponents of the present government.
âRepresentatives of opposition parties cannot be guaranteed a fair trial in current circumstancesâ, Romanowski said adding that, âI want to stand before independent prosecutors and judiciary to respond to the charges levelled against me.â
He further claimed that some of the evidence used against him had been fabricated in order to claim that he had acted without authorisation with regard to his decisions on the allocation of public funds.
Reacting to Hungaryâs decision to grant Romanowski asylum, Polish foreign minister RadosĆaw Sikorski called it an âaction that is hostile towards Poland and to the values of the EUâ and said Poland would soon be announcing what further action it planned to take.
However, WiesĆaw SzczepaĆski, deputy interior minister, told commercial television news channel TVN24 that Poland would seek assistance from the European Commission and that the result was likely to be legal action against Hungary in the ECJ. This could lead to Hungary being heavily fined for ârule of law violationsâ for its refusal to hand over Romanowski to the Polish authorities.
Hungarian PM Viktor OrbĂĄn, interviewed by news portal mandiner.hu on December 19 said that Polish-Hungarian relations are âat a low ebbâ since âPolish patriots have been replaced by a rainbow coalition which regards us Hungarian patriots as enemies.â
He slammed the Tusk government for violating the rule of law.
âPolish liberals have invented a new concept for the rule of law which is based on using it to destroy political opponents,â he said.
When asked whether Hungary would be willing to receive Polish political refugees OrbĂĄn confirmed.
âWe will offer shelter to all who are facing political persecution in their own countryâ, he said.
A trans-identified male convicted of murdering his own parents is attempting to be get back into a womenâs prison after being transferred out due to his sexual behavior with the female inmates. Amber FayeFox Kim, 35, whose birth name is Bryan, is suing the stateâs Department of Corrections, claiming that being housed in a male prison is âcruel and unusual punishment.â
On June 21, the Washington Department of Corrections (DOC) transferred Kim out of the Washington Correctional Center for Women (WCCW) and to the Monroe Correctional Facility, a menâs prison. Kim had been detained at the WCCW for three and a half years, but was moved due to âsafety concernsâ after he reportedly had been observed having prohibited sexual interactions with a female inmate at WCCW.
According to The National Review, a prison guard witnessed Kim and his 25-year-old cellmate, Sincer-A Marie Nerton, âactively having sexâ on the floor of the cell. The guard, who chose to remain anonymous when speaking with the outlet, filed a report in March detailing a firsthand account.
âKimâs hands were on Nertonâs buttox [sic] in a spread open position while Kimâs erect penis was penetrating Nertonâs vagina,â the report read. âThis is against MSU rules and policy. WAC-504-Engaging in a sex act with another person within the facility that is not otherwise included in these rules, except in an approved extended family visit.â
Now, the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington has announced their legal support for Kim in a bid to have him transferred back into a womenâs prison while arguing that incarceration at a menâs detention center places him âat imminent risk of harm.â A press release issued by the ACLU on December 17 argues that the placement of Kim in Monroe, a prison for men, is âunconstitutionalâ and an example of transphobia.
âMs. Kim has lived at the WCCW since 2021,â reads the ACLU statement issued by Attorney Adrien Leavitt, which refers to Kim with feminine pronouns. âOn March 14, 2024, Ms. Kim and her cellmate, a cisgender woman, were caught having consensual sexual contact and were each found guilty of a 504 infraction for violating rules around sexual contact.â
The press release continued: âIn its filing, the ACLU of Washington argues that the transfer violates Article I, Section 14 of the Washington Constitution, which prohibits cruel punishment ⊠Transfer to a menâs prison exposes Ms. Kim to an imminent danger of violence, sexual assault, and harassment.â
An affidavit filed December 17 by the ACLU on Kimâs behalf contains testimony from the convicted killer. âI read the encyclopedia off and on for years. When I reached the letter âT,â I found a word for the secret of me, âtranssexual.â I was in middle school,â Kim states.
âThroughout middle and high school, I went by the name âKim.â Although my friends and peers thought they were just calling me âKimâ because it was my last name, I loved being called a female name and it helped me emotionally as I struggled with gender dysphoria,â he continues.
When Kim was incarcerated at the age of 18, he claims that he became âthe target of constant bullying due to being effeminateâ and other inmates perceiving him as being homosexual.
âI survived two attempted sexual assaults at Walla Walla. Each time, I was able to physically defend myself and ward off the attacks. I know that, had I not fought back, I would have been raped. I feel that I was targeted for these attempted sexual assaults because of my effeminate appearance.â
While incarcerated among the male prison population, Kim alleges that he âwas heckled, cat-called, hit-on, objectified, sexualized, and stalked by men,â and that he received âa nearly constant stream of notes from other inmatesâ propositioning him for âanonymous sex in the showers.â
Kim says that he âbecame involved in a coalition supporting transgender prisonersâ which assisted him in legally changing his name from Bryan to Amber Fayefox, adding, âMy name change was used as a template for other incarcerated transgender people who wanted to change their names.â
Bizarrely, Kim adds his rationale for choosing the feminine name âAmber,â saying, âI chose the name Amber because it is one of few precious stones that was once part of a living being; it preserves the past within it and yet is electrically alive. I was also draw to the name Amber because, in Greek mythology, the name Amber is equivalent to the name of the Greek goddess Electra⊠The name Amber reflects my true identity.â
The convicted murderer also claims that his 2021 transfer to the female prison estate was âa massive improvementâ because he could âtruly live and be seen as a woman.â
While held at WCCW, Kim began receiving electrolysis for facial hair removal on the taxpayerâs dime, and was placed on a waitlist for genital surgery. Kim claims he received genital surgery âshortly afterâ he was transferred back to a menâs prison after having engaged in sexual interactions with a female inmate at WCCW.
After Kim was transferred out of womenâs prison WCCW at the end of June, The Huffington Postreported sympathetically on the case while referring to Kim with feminine pronouns and condemning the âtransphobic rationaleâ that had seen Kim placed in a male correctional facility for fifteen years.
According to the outlet, Kim requested to see documentation authorizing his transfer during the relocation process. When his requests were denied, he refused to continue walking. As a result, guards were left no other option than to restrain and forcibly relocate Kim, where he was also placed in solitary confinement as a disciplinary action for refusing the transfer.
Immediately following Kimâs transfer to Monroe, he began a hunger strike in protest. After 17 days, he discontinued the hunger strike because, according to Kim, he was told he would be denied state-funded genital surgeries if he did not comply.
In November 2023, The Huffington Post had also portrayed Kim in a compassionate light in an article on trans-identifying male inmates â despite the fact that Kim has previously been described by a psychiatrist as suffering from antisocial personality disorder and having âno conscience.â In a 2022 psychiatrist report, Kim is quoted as saying that he was âno good at being a boy but not allowed to be a girlâ during his childhood. Kim claimed that his parents had made multiple threats to kill him leading up to the murder, and that they had refused to let him move out.
âKim fatally stabbed her father and killed her mother when she returned home,â read the Huffington Post article. âKim, 18 at the time, was sentenced to die in prison. Her plans of coming out now seemed impossible.â
In 2008, at the age of 19, Kim was found guilty of aggravated first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his father, Richard Kim, and the bludgeoning and strangulation of his mother, Terri Kim reported The Spokesman-Review. The Kims were killed by their son at their home in Mount Spokane on December 5, 2006.
During his closing remarks at the trial, Chief Deputy Criminal Prosecutor Jack Driscoll told the jury Bryan Kim killed his parents because they had been charging him $1,000 for rent and were prepared to evict him from their home. âHis parents had given him a deadline. They needed to die so he could have what he felt he was entitled go,â Driscoll told the jury.
Expert witness Dr. William Grant, of Eastern State Hospital, testified that he believed Kim had âno conscienceâ and diagnosed him as displaying symptoms of antisocial personality disorder, as evidenced in part by the violent outbursts which he had been prescribed medication to control.
The public defenderâs expert, Dr. Michael Arambula, of San Antonio, argued that the medication had aggravated his condition and as such was not entirely responsible for the murders of his parents. Arambula said Kim suffered from depression at an unusually early age and hadnât been properly treated.
Both psychiatrists agreed, however, that Kim was mentally ill. After brutally killing his parents, Kim attempted to clean up the crime scene, and had earlier that same day stolen his fatherâs debit card. Before the murders, Kim withdrew $1,000 from his fatherâs account and went shopping.
During court proceedings, Kimâs sister Jessica testified that her brother suffered from bipolar disorder. She also knew him to be âfascinated with Zip tiesâ and remarked that he âslept with a knife under his pillowâ.
Similarly, a former girlfriend, Marina Ritchey, told the court of the âviolent imagesâ Kim said would flood his mind whenever he thought of his parents. Tensions were high in the home and disputes broke out frequently over Bryanâs refusal to take his medication to treat his bipolar disorder. According to Sgt. Dave Reagan of the Spokane County Sheriffâs Office, there was also a âhistory of assault behaviorâ between Kim and his parents leading up to the murders.
Last October, the Washington Department of Corrections reached a settlement with the nonprofit organization Disability Rights Washington that updated the prison systemâs policies in regards to trans-identifying inmates.
âPatients with gender dysphoria will also be promptly evaluated for gender-affirming surgeries and procedures by a community expert in gender-affirming care and patients will have access to gender-affirming mental health care,â reads a press release announcing the decision.
According to the updated prison policy, an inmateâs âgender expression / transition status or gender identity ⊠will be maintained as confidential and will only be disclosed within the Department on a need-to-know basis.â DOC Secretary Cheryl Strange hailed the âlandmark agreementâ as âa step in the right direction.â
Kim is not the first trans-identified male inmate caught having sexual contact with a female inmate at WCCW in recent years.
As previously exclusively reported by Reduxx, another trans-identified male transfer at WCCW sexually assaulted a female inmate in 2022. The woman, who was identified under the pseudonym âMary,â came forward to tell Reduxx that violent sex offender Christopher Williams sexually abused her after he was moved into her cell.
The situation took a turn for the worse after Mary was prescribed sleeping medication to help with her anxiety at night.
âIâm not sure how many times he touched me because of my [meds]. But one day I came back to my cell from a work shift and he had two strap-on dildos and asked me to use them on him. I refused. That night, I was woken up to him touching me.â
While Kimâs transfer to the male estate is a first for the state of Washington, it is not an isolated case nationally. At least one other male inmate who has claimed to be a woman has been transferred out of a womenâs prison â though unlike Kim, the decision was made to protect him, rather than to safeguard women.
Raequan âRaeâ Rollins was previously held at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women (EMCF) in New Jersey. In 2019 he was sentenced to four years in prison for a violent robbery incident, and after spending five months in a male facility, Rollins changed his legal gender marker to âfemaleâ and was subsequently transferred to the Edna Mahan womenâs estate in October of that year.
While detained at EMCF, Rollins assaulted several prison officers and sexually harassed female guards and inmates. Rollins would ultimately provoke one of the most violent prison riots at EMCFâs history in January of 2021, during which he was beaten, and six women were severely battered by guards.
After filing a lawsuit that year, Rollins was transferred out of the womenâs prison for his safety and temporarily placed in the male estate at the New Jersey State Prison, before being transferred again to Pennsylvaniaâs State Correctional Institution at Muncy, a facility for adult female offenders.
The annulment of the elections on December 6 after the surprise first-round victory of outsider CÄlin Georgescu is a plot by politicians and courts to prevent radical change in Bucharestâs policy towards Ukraine, says George Simion, leader of the hard-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians party.
âWe are facing a coup dâetat against the will of the peopleâ, Simion tells Brussels Signal.
When visiting the corridors of power in Brussels, Simion said he heard âagain and again and again about the rule of law.â
He continued: âItâs exactly the rule of law which is being shattered [in Romania] and nobody seems to careâ.
Simion, who secured around 1.3 million votes in the first round of the annulled election, says the reaction of the European Union to the annulment has been âshamefulâ.
âThe EPP [European Peopleâs party] and the Socialists are backing this coup dâetat and they are backing the current undemocratic government. We ⊠had speeches in our campaign about Belarus, Lukashenko, about whatâs happening in undemocratic countries, but we never believed that we will get in such a point where in Romania we will have annulled free elections,â he said.
Romaniaâs political landscape has been thrown into chaos by the constitutional courtâs decision. It is unclear if the Bucharest parliament will be able to function when it meets in coming days as there are moves to invalidate the mandates of parliamentarians sympathetic to Georgescu, it is claimed. Peaceful protestors and at least one MP have been arrested near the parliament, said Mr Simion.
No-one knows when new presidential elections will take place, or if Georgescu will be allowed to stand. Simion says he supports Georgescu and would implement Georgescuâs policy of ceasing arms shipments to Ukraine if he was elected following a new presidential plebiscite.
âRomania wasnât transparent in telling the world and ⊠telling its own citizens that we give weapons and military aid to Ukraine,â he said. âThis is kept secret and the majority of the Romanians donât want us to help or to get involved in this war.â
On allegations that Russia interfered in the first round, allegedly via social media and TikTok in particular, Simion said there was âno proofâ. While intelligence has reportedly been declassified and shown to the constitutional court, none had been made public, he said. Court members are political appointees and therefore biased, he added.
âThey annulled our presidential elections without any substantial proof of foreign interference.â
âSo 10 million votes were annulled by a system that fears the will of the people. Itâs unprecedented inside the European Union and inside the free world, inside civilised countries. We were expecting a democratic transition of power from the current government and the current president to the newly elected leaders of the Romanian peopleâ.
Georgescu won the first round of the presidential vote, garnering 23 per cent. Elena Lasconi, of the opposition Save Romania Union, secured 19 per cent as was due to face Georgescu in a runoff on December 8. Marcel Ciolacu of the governing Social Democrats (and prime minister) came in third while Simion came fourth with around 14 per cent, or around 1.3 million votes.
The term of the current president, Klaus Iohannis, is due to end later in December, though he is now expected to continue in a caretaker capacity. He has been in power for ten years.
The European Commission has opened a formal investigation into TikTok after concluding there were âserious indicationsâ of foreign interference in the recent Romanian presidential election using the video-sharing platform.
Do people on the radical left demonstrate a mental disorder? Most people on the right roll their eyes at the hysteria and fears of the left, but whatâs to be done?
Given that there were major shifts on the left in the 2024 election, is it possible that somehow sanity is breaking through? With the ongoing polarization that has burdened this country, itâs worthwhile to examine the psychological framework of leftists; both how they see themselves and how they see others. The results may also indicate whether the changes in voting behavior might continue, or whether they were situational.
A phrase thatâs been coined is âLeft-Wing Authoritarianismâ (LWA) or Left-Wing Extremism. A report from last year shed some light on this mentality of the left:
Narcissistic individuals and those with psychopathic tendencies are more likely to strongly endorse left-wing antihierarchical aggression, according to new research published in Current Psychology.
âBased on our results, we introduced a new contribution to the literature on dark personality traits, coining the term dark-ego-vehicle principle (DEVP),â [researchers] Krispenz and Bertrams explained. âAccording to this principle, individuals with dark personalities â such as high narcissistic and psychopathic traits â are attracted to certain forms of political and social activism which they can use as a vehicle to satisfy their own ego-focused needs instead of actually aiming at social justice and equality.â
Other studies reflect results that differentiate between left-wing and right-wing authoritarianism:
LWA is also linked with signs of mental distress, such as symptoms of anxiety and depression. Another European study of social media users addressed how LWA may be specifically linked with perceived grievance and prejudice. LWA relates to the tendency to see sexism and White privilege in everyday life, as well as holding negative views of men. These patterns are nearly the exact opposite of existing evidence on RWA [emphasis added].
Traits of authoritarianism arenât unique to the left, but they manifest differentlyâŠand all too often, violently:
âAn individual high in LWA might declare anyone to be âold fashionedâ who is opposing their own âprogressive values,â strive to suppress free speech to regulate the expression of right-wing beliefs in educational institutions, and even endorse the use of violence to reach their own political goals,â the authors said.
What are some of the conclusions we might draw from a better understanding of those with LWA?
1. A good place to start is a shared understanding of the meaning of âpsychopathology.â Here is one definition: âPsychopathology describes a wide array of mental health conditions, including but not limited to depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and various personality disorders.â Another way to define psychopathology is the term âabnormal behavior.â We could explore what the word âabnormalâ means, but most people would likely agree that participation in violent protests against innocent parties is not the norm.
2. LWAs may not just be ideologues. They may not even have an ideology. Instead, they are driven by their mental constructs. For example, compared to people within the RWA category, evidence exists that individuals high in LWA are more âemotionally reactive.â Also, see this:
A team of American and Dutch researchers carried out 12 studies across 74,000 people worldwide. They concluded that high LWA persons tended to:
See threats in multiple aspects of everyday life.
Believe the world is a just and fair place.
Demand others be politically correct.
Hold prejudiced views of African American and Jewish persons.
Show mental inflexibility.
Examples of how these beliefs manifest would be seen in cancel culture, claims of systemic racism, and anti-Black and anti-Semitic beliefs and language.
3. It is nearly impossible to have a productive discussion with a person who has the LWA traits. They are overly emotional, so that rational conversation is discounted; you are likely to be accused of being a Nazi or racist. Having an intellectual discussion will also be difficult, since they are narcissistic and assume their views (progressivism) are the correct ones to have; they have all the information they need.
One last question to ask: To what degree are most leftists LWA? Probably a staggering amount.
So is waiting for the LWA to come around and approach politics rationally and maturely a foolish notion? It might be.
I think the best thing people can do is be open to discussing conflicting views, as difficult as that might be. If a person wants to talk politics with you, you can choose, before you launch the discussion, to set the parameters: Demonstrate listening by paraphrasing what the person says; maintain a tolerable âtemperatureâ through the discussion; avoid name-calling; commit to learning from each other; and make an agreement to provide resources after the discussion.
You may not get past the first parameter, but your effort will be one small attempt toward unifying a struggling country.
Another case of gang rape involving migrants, this time in France, involving three Algerians who targeted a Polish woman inside a squatted apartment in the city of Gap.
The case involves a 42-year-old Polish woman who was visiting her daughter and a friend on Dec. 13. She stopped at the friendâs apartment in the city center, which happened to be next door to the three accused men, who prosecutors say are squatting their apartment.
The crime scene in the Rue de Colonel Roux in Gap
âThese three men, of Algerian nationality, are in an irregular situation on the territory.â Marion Lozacâhmeur, public prosecutor, specifies: âOne of them had an OQTF (obligation to leave French territory) and the three were the subject of a new OQTF from the Hautes-Alpes prefecture.â
Prosecutors say that the three men gang raped the Polish mother, but there are few details about the case available. News reports indicate there were six men squatting the apartment, but so far, only three have been arrested following police interrogations. It is unclear how the women entered their apartment or what relationship she had with the men â if any â prior to the alleged gang rape.
Although the men have deportation orders, it is also unclear why the three men were not deported. However, as Remix News has previously reported, deportation rates for Algerians in France with a deportation order are an abysmal 0.2 percent. In other words, only 2 out of every 1,000 Algerians with a deportation order are ever actually sent back. This data came to light following the rape, torture and murder of 12-year-old Lola in Paris by an Algerian woman with a longstanding deportation order, a case that shocked the nation in 2022.
The three Algerian men in the case were born between 1995 and 2005. They are now in pretrial detention and face charges of gang rape, according to French publication Le Dauphine.
The Danish Government has been pushing forward with a new step in its citizenship process: Screening applicants for âanti-democratic attitudesâ.
This move, announced by the Minister of Immigration and Integration on December 17, is aimed at ensuring those granted Danish citizenship align with âthe countryâs democratic valuesâ.
âThe government believes that it must be ensured to the greatest extent possible that those who obtain Danish citizenship actually share Danish democratic values,â the administration said in a press release.
Under current law, only the Folketing, Denmarkâs parliament, can grant citizenship. To oversee the new measure, the government has proposed creating an expert committee to assess whether potential citizens meet the countryâs democratic standards.
The committee would also ensure its decisions aligned with Denmarkâs Constitution and international obligations.
âWeâre seeing a disturbing rise in totalitarian attitudes among a small minority of Muslims here, attitudes that are simply unacceptable in Denmark,â said Kaare Dybvad Bek, Denmarkâs Minister of Immigration and Integration.
The governmentâs statement did not explain whether the new screening body would set clear criteria for identifying âanti-democraticâ views that could disqualify applicants.
âIt is, of course, important that both law, technology, practice and economics are examined properly and thoroughly so that we have a good basis for making a political decision on how such a screening could possibly be organized,â said Bek.
The announcement followed an unprecedented and controversial event that took place earlier in December in the Danish parliament.
For the first time, three applicants â who met all the official requirements for Danish citizenship â were interviewed by the parliamentâs Citizenship Committee.
The move sparked protests, with Alternative Party MP Helene Brydensholt, the co-deputy chair of the parliamentâs Citizenship Committee, resigning in opposition to the screening.
âI am stepping down from the Citizenship Committee because a majority in the committee has chosen to conduct interviews that were called on very short notice, without proper legal principles in place, and where conventions could potentially be violated,â she said at the time.
The applicants were flagged due to their social media activity. One, for example, had publicly celebrated the death of Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks, known for his controversial depictions of Muhammad.
Mikkel BjĂžrn, from the Danish Peopleâs Party, had pointed to that as evidence showing the applicantâs values clashed with Denmarkâs.
Danish Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal (Venstre) Party, Troels Lund Poulsen, has since announced plans to review ânon-Western immigrantâ access to early retirement pensions.
